One of the greatest voices of the 20th century - and that's no exaggeration. She had one of the most versatile and controlled voices in rock. Linda was - no surprise - every guy's crush at the time (along with Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac and Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart), but she's so much more than a pretty face. She explored so many styles of music - from rock and country to orchestral standards, operetta, and even the Mexican folksongs of her childhood. You should watch the recent documentary about her life called "The Sound of My Voice." It will give you a well-rounded overview of her life's work and her influence on the music industry as someone who broke down male-dominated barriers and was instrumental in introducing the world to the likes of The Eagles (formerly members of her backing band) and Emmylou Harris.

Daniel, Linda Ronstadt was one of the greatest singers of her era(mostly '70s) right up there with Karen Carpenter and Ann Wilson), This song is more country rock and features Dan Dugmore on steel guitar. She has many rockers like You're No Good, When Will I Be Loved, Prisoner In Disguise and Tracks Of My Tears, to mention only a few. One of her original backing bands later became the Eagles(Frey-Henley). She covered Neil Young(Love Is A Rose, After The Gold Rush), Warren Zevon(Hasten Down The Wind,Poor Poor Pitiful Me) as well as Smokey Robinson, Karla Bonoff, Dolly Parton and James Taylor in addition to Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. She also recorded with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris. One of the most versatile singers, she was on Broadway in Pirates of Penzance(1981) and in the film version in 1983. She also recorded a jazz album For Sentimental Reasons(1986), a traditional pop standards album produced by Nelson Riddle, What's New(1983) and an album of traditional Mexican mariachi music Canciones de Mi Padre(Songs of My Father) in 1987. Ronstadt released 28 studio albums during her career. She was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 and honored at the Kennedy Center in 2019. She retired from singing in 2011 and announced in 2013 that she had Parkinson's disease and can no longer sing. .

Linda Ronstadt's voice was almost operatic. In addition to rock and pop songs, she also recorded a couple of albums of Tin Pan Alley standards, as well as a couple of albums of Mexican music (her ancestry is part Mexican). Here she is in a live performance singing La Charreada with a mariachi orchestra: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWqYlHuJhp2ki6s I really encourage you to watch this. You'll be astounded. Ronstadt's first hit record was Different Drum in 1967 with a group called The Stone Poneys. She went solo after that, and had hits with Long Long Time, You're No Good, When Will I Be Loved, That'll Be the Day, It's So Easy, Poor Poor Pitiful Me, and many more. Sadly, Linda Ronstadt can no longer sing because she has progressive supranuclear palsy (originally misdiagnosed as Parkinson's disease). BTW, one of Ronstadt's backing bands went on to become The Eagles.

And don't forget her performance in the Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta "The Pirates of Penzance," where her high soprano range came out to shine. She performed it live on Broadway, and also in the film. Kevin Kline, who played the Pirate King in that production, said in an interview that when they did the initial rehearsal, he was utterly stunned by her range and power -- since she was best known as a rock singer who played in arenas and stadiums at that point. Ronstadt explained that she grew up listening to Gilbert and Sullivan operettas because her mother loved them, so Linda already knew all the songs.

Linda Ronstadt was indeed one of the best vocalists of that era, and over her career she showed an incredible range of talent in many genres. She did a number of what you'd likely consider more "rock" songs. She did a "traditional" album and tour with the Nelson Riddle orchestra, which was an homage to music from her youth. She made an appearance in the film version of "The Pirates of Penzance", a comic opera By Gilbert and Sullivan from the 19th century (she played Mable). She sang songs in Spanish. Alas, she is in poor health and can no longer perform. Thanks again for the reaction. If you want to listen to yet another '70's female vocalist (who flew largely under the radar, but is one of my favorites) try Rickie Lee Jones. I'd recommend "Danny's All-Start Joint" as a great introduction to her music.

Roy Orbison is a must listen. Huuuuggggeee influence on The Beatles. In fact, the Beatles opened for Orbison when he toured England in 1963, but by the end of the tour, The Beatles were headlining. Their song "Please Please Me" is an homage to Orbison, and their first #1 hit in the UK. Check out "Different Drum" with Rondstadt singing lead in the group "The Stone Poneys". Buddy Holly is a MUST react, too. Also a huge Beatles influence. In fact --- the first song EVER recorded by John, Paul and George was "That'll Be the Day", when they were still teenagers, on a cheap recording system in the living room of a gentleman in the neighborhood. Peter Asher? His sister, Jane, was Paul McCartney's girlfriend, then fiancee, a very high profile couple in 1964-67. "A World Without Love" was written by Paul McCartney for Peter and Gordon. McCartney lived in an attic bedroom in the Asher home, next to Peter's bedroom. It was in that bedroom in 1963 when he woke up with a song in his head. He washed his face, sat down at the piano...and began writing what became "Yesterday".

It has several more modern stars (modern at the time). Like JD Souther of the Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, K.D. @@lantose You do realize that's not true, there are hundreds of Country bands that don't possess a steel pedal guitar as many just use a steel, brass or glass tube that can be worn over either the pinkie or ring finger and then slid along the strings of any guitar, acoustic or electric. A pedal steel guitar is a nice addition with knee and foot pedals that change chords to provide more twang. It requires constant tuning and maintaining, and it is a bit of a headache to haul around on tour. Ergo, every country band doesn't have one.

"50s oldies" sounds like jukebox era. But the Riddle albums were mostly earlier material than that...30s and 40s big band era standards. Those albums are aural heaven. (Oh how I wish Karen Carpenter had done that too...)

Can't tell you how happy I was to hear this great classic again after so many years. Linda was the dream of every teenage boy in the 7o's. with many huge hits to her name . I saw her live at the Blossom music center in Cleveland Ohio in 1978.. what a huge treat it was when she came out on the stage wearing racing skates , and wearing a silk bicycle jacket and short shorts ....Oh the Memories . Great Choice Daniel .. By the way that thing the fella was playing is a flat steel guitar. that's how it is played.. It is usually associated with country music . Keep on bringing the stars buddy !

I wholeheartedly reccomend that you watch/listen to the video of Linda Ronstadt performing a show called "Canciones de mi Padre". She grew up in Arizona, and has latina/Mexican heritage. She doesn't speak spanish, but learned the songs phonetically. It's still one of the best selling albums in Latin American music. It's absolutely gorgeous!

Before Stevie Nicks there was Linda Ronstadt. Her cover of the Stones' Tumblin' Dice is killer; maybe a good cover comparison for you. FYI, Glen Frey and Don Henley broke off from Linda's band to form the Eagles.

I saw her live twice, the first time she was lowered down singing on a big crescent moon for her entrance. The second time, more recently, my sister and I went to see her speak (sadly she can no longer sing due to Parkinson's Disease and even has difficulty speaking for long periods of time). We went to show her our love, support, and thanks. She is half Mexican-American, and as a fellow Mex-Am singer, I have always felt a certain pride for her, and for Selena. She had a lot of great radio hits but after those: Love Has No Pride, Blowing Away, Sorrow Lives Here in My Heart. Then from the Mexican songs: Los Laureles (The Laurels),Tata Dios (Father God), El Crucifijo de Piedra (Crucifix of Stone), studio recordings, please.

Love her voice. I'm far from a fan of country but when Linda sings it she brings it to another level. So many great tunes from her. Three I recommend would be You're No Good, Long Long Time and It Doesn't Matter Anymore (live) which is a Buddy Holly cover.

She is the reason the Eagles were formed. Glen Fry and Don Henley were musicians in her band. They had begun writing songs together. Her management could not find opening acts for her so she in courage them to start a band and BAM we got the Eagles

Glad you enjoyed Linda. In the late 70’s and into the early 80’s, she had a relationship with Jerry Brown, a 2x governor of California. She is now 74 and suffering from a rare, Parkinson like disease. Two requests for future reactions: 1) her 1977 live in Atlanta version of Someone to Lay Down Beside Me - the piano intro by Don Grolnick is awesome, and you get a glimpse of guitarist Waddy Wachtel, who played with many, many, of the greats from those years and 2) her 1990 live duet with Aaron Neville on the song Don’t Know Much - one of the greatest duets of all time, I think. Cheers.

Daniel, if you get to see the documentary on her, they say that she was brought up listening to and singing opera. That's where the power in her voice comes from. she liked to mix pop, jazz, and Latino music together. Her producers said NO but she said, " If I don't do it my way, I'll not do anything" . She was right on.

Most successful female singer of the '70's. This from Wikipedia "Linda Maria Ronstadt (born July 15, 1946) is a retired American singer who performed and recorded in diverse genres including rock, country, light opera, and Latin. She has earned 10 Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music awards, an Emmy Award, and an ALMA Award." I cannot believe you have never heard of her. It boggles my mind.

Great powerful voice. Beautiful. Smart and articulate. Big pop/rock star in the 70's & 80's. Glen Frey & Don Henley were in one of her early bands. She encouraged them to go out on their own. The rest is history. Besides all the pop/rock covers she did, she later did an album of old ballad standards from the 30's & 40's, an album of Mexican standards, and an album with Emmylou Harris & Dolly Parton. She starred in a Broadway Musical and of course dated the then Governor of California, Jerry Brown. Interesting life.

Linda is one of my favorite female singers....along with Karen Carpenter. Had a major crush on her back in the day as well. You're No Good, Desperado, Tracks of My Tears and When Will I Be Loved. She also did some albums/songs with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton (albums called Trio). Search that out as well.
