Paranoid is one of those rare albums that you can listen from start to finish, every song is amazing.

Maybe the most impressive rock song i ever heard. Some young british put the listener in a drug s addict experience from pleasure of drug to the sad end.The moment of drumms like a heartbeat and then a solo so desperate like the man trying to find something to save him.Brilliant like whole Paranoid LP.Every song is musically and lyrically a cry for help for this world we live. There were a lot of bands at 70s to entertain people but only one to make people think about what we humans must do to change the world

The "first it was the bomb" in the lyrics he was referring to I think was Nagasaki [WWII], then he states Viet Nam napalm which came years later to put it in perspective.

Yes, Dicon, you pretty much got it; the song is about a Vietnam War vet who turns to heroin use. The song describes both musically and lyrically his own destruction. The genius in the composition, for me, is how the dynamics of the music changes to paint the picture according to the unfolding of the story. I first heard this album (Paranoid) as a 13/14-year-old, in 1972/3. It took me another 40 years or so to realise that Hand of Doom is one of the greatest rock songs ever written - probably in the top 10. You will do the same, albeit you seem to be ahead of me at your age in your perceptive analysis. Black Sabbath lyrics are usually extremely deep. Our friend WSN000, below, recommended that you try A National Acrobat, and I would go along with that. Best wishes from the UK.

They played a pair of gigs for US soldiers returning from Vietnam. The guys that needed a bit more patching up before they could make the parade, so to speak. Geezer is an attentive little weirdo and took a lot of it in.

Another lyrically deep song by Sabbath that's underrated is A National Acrobat. Musically, it's also top notch... definitely worth checking out.

Vietnam Vet, PTSD !! Sad. They still need help. I'm 73 years young and these Vets were mistreated when they returned. God Bless them !! and all our troops !!

I'm a Nam vet. Experienced a lot, I did. This ptsd acronym is the modern word for shell shocked. This problem was very rare and in my fighting days and also during the time my father and his brothers were fighting in ww2. (Now that was real scary). I know it's real, but they never had the problem. Now, it seems everybody has it or some other type of disorder.

Anger, depression, anxiety, nightmares, hyper vigilance, sleeplessness, withdrawn and loss of interest in things you once enjoyed are a few of the symptoms of PTSD/Shell Shock. I would never compare my experiences in the first Gulf War to what many of the Vietnam Vets went through, but living with PTSD is still an everyday struggle. When I first returned, I went from never tasting alcohol to trying to stay intoxicated for the first 5 years. Luckily, I never turned to drugs and I don't carry a half gallon of Bacardi around with me everywhere I go anymore. I haven't quit drinking, but it's nothing like it was before.

Obviously wallowing in darkness is pointless and can lead to nihilism. However, to ignore it is just as bad. The lyrics can be a glimpse into the abyss, but usually with a purpose, a message to be delivered. The best comedians get the message across with a laugh. Sometimes you have to be shocked, to get a shocking truth.

I am in my 7th decade of life and hard core Black Sabbath from the beginning. As a heavy surf/skate party animal in the 70’s this song scared the absolute Shiite out of me ad well as everyone around me. As with all of Sabbaths early work, it is not a glorification of saten and drugs but instead a WARNING. This piece stopped countless 70’s casual drug users dead in their tracks and saved countless lives!

Okay!! I was going to suggest this song but I assumed it would be too obscure and/or not "your thing" but such a groovy as tune... If you want to to really go dark/sublime and maddening... Check out King Crimson's "Starless"... One of the few songs that make we "well-up" and get teary eyed from its beauty and sorrow... Enjoy!! Great Videos!

I think the song itself is a metaphor for " a trip ". The different tempos represent the different stages of the eventual assent into death through drug use. Just my interpretation.
