Fun Fact: At 2:15 it actually shows a painting, not a picture. It was drawn by a person being held at a concentration camp he set up. Pol Pot gave the prisoner the order to draw the painting or die, and he drew it well, so well in fact he was kept alive with only 12 other prisoners. He is still alive today and visits the camp regualy to tell his story.

There are records of deaths from both the conditions within the country due to national policy and active killings by forces loyal to the leader in question, deaths that occurred in particular prisons, concentration and/or extermination camps, riots and incidents of political unrest etc. etc. Of course the exact numbers are not 100% accurate but for sure they're not way off the mark.

And also a statistician, who doesn't hesitate to refute someone else's numbers for events that happened decades or centuries ago, while citing without hesitation what they "know" are the true figures. All of the numbers used in this video are estimates, some cruder than others, but all of them subject to argument. Nobody posting here knows the true numbers better than anyone else. It's just a question of which source someone chooses to accept. I'm always stunned by the arrogance of posters who believe that only they know the truth, simply because they've chosen to believe some particular source, which is, in fact, no more authoritative than any other.

@@jakes1566 The reason why Leopold II can be considered so murderous is because a lot of casualties happened when Congo was his personal possession (which is possibly one of the most pretentious, rediculous and stupid things ever). Though the Belgian government massively fucked the situation up as well in their African colonies a lot of atrocities in the country were Leopold's fault.
