My wife and I have 2 of the same model vehicle 2022 Hybrid cars. I had a rodent chew through the front collision sensor wiring in both vehicles, 1 week apart. Each repair cost our insurance $9,000 each minus the $500 deductible for each instance. I purchased rodent tape from Honda, and haven't had any issues since. (knock on wood)

A ground hog chewed EVERY harness on my dad's Denali dually over the course of a week. He made a home on top of the transmission. We had to put it on the flatbed right our of our finished pole building. It took hours to figure out how to get it on the tow truck due to the electronic parking break (and no one had the release tool). We ended up using 2 floor jacks to lift the rear axel and skidded it on those onto the bed, then met the driver at the shop with the jacks to get it off. It took months to get all the new harnesses. The perks of extruding wires with economy friendly oils. It's like candy for the rodents. His truck was outside for 4 hours only because I was doing a brake job. Literally the only reason the sucker got in there.

Rat’s does a lot of damage to your engine wire harness, replace bunch of them in the dealership, sometimes they just damage only some wires and then it’s easier to repair.

We got baited😅. Field mice here in the midwest are a problem for sure. But worse are the chipmunks and the red piney squirrels. They aren't looking for food necessarily, they like chewing plastic and wires for oral maintenance. These Bastards cause $1,000's of in damages. Poison bait bars,traps and hunting skills are a must to combat these issues.

Years ago, I had a small mouse crawl its way into my heating ventilation ducting on my brand-new Chevy S10 Blazer SUV. Eventually the rodent died inside the vehicle, and every time I turned on the heater, I was overwhelmed by dead animal odor. The dealer removed the dead mouse, but it wasn't covered under warranty.

I checked the cowl area on my 2024 F-450 Limited where you think that nasty rodent got in, and I have a piece of plastic that covers that area and there’s no hole. You might want to check with a parts department and see if you’re missing that piece.

While camping, rodents got into my 3500 HD Duramax front bumper and ate the wiring harness connection to the front bumper sonar sensors. I noticed it immediately was able to find and fix it quickly. However, for over 9 months after that camping trip, I was getting a very intermittent fuel rail pressure errors and throwing codes and never thought it was related to rodents. After the dealership replaced almost everything from Fuel FIlter to fuel pump, sensors and fuel rails under warranty, it still kept throwing fuel system related codes. Finally, they decided to replace the main wiring harness and sure enough, they found the main engine wiring harness had one area that looked like it was chewed on and was the reason for all the intermittent issues. The most frustrating nine months ever on a new truck. In looking into this further, all new vehicles wire insulation smells like food to rodents ever since the EPA forced nontoxic wiring insulation that uses corn starch as an ingredient. I have double wrapped all my wire harness loom to connector openings, sprayed peppermint oil inside and around undercarriage and installed electronic light and rodent repellent noise devices inside engine compartment and under the truck. so far, so good.
@deltabravo12572 күн бұрын
I've heard and read that the wiring loom is sometimes made from a soy based product, which is like "food" to a rodent.

Had similar issue with my 1 ton dually. Service manager said that modern vehicles went with a seed or corn based oil coating on wires vs a conventional petroleum based oil wire covering, that rodents apparently love. When I asked why in the world they would ever do that, he only shrugged and said we apparently needed to save the planet.

@@risusrules yep! Had one chew through the vents in my dash up under my windshield. The dealership told me the same thing. Luckily, they didn’t destroy any wiring.

Not sure why but Ford Motor Co uses soy oil in their harnesses. All vehicles are subject to them but as a independent repair shop in a very rural area, we repair 20 to 1 ratio Ford compared with all other companies. Just completed a 8hr and lots of connector replacements on a moderately new Ford suv

Sorry you've been dealing with rats, JD, first in your 5th wheel, now in your new high $$$ truck. Our neighbor had one get into their Honda EV in their garage. It nested up in the dash behind the glove box and chewed up the wiring badly, then died in there. It had to be removed in pieces, awfully disgusting. Insurance covered it! Hopefully with your perseverance, you'll have no further problems. We've had them in our yard here in California, but a bit of peanut butter and a couple pieces of dog kibble on a snap trap, and I get them every time, which thankfully is not often.

Hi JD. Ford vehicles are the worst for mice, rats, squirrels etc chewing the wiring. I live in Indiana, had two neighbors that squirrels got into the engine bay of their vehicles that sit outside, chewed up the wiring so bad they had to be towed to the mechanic to get repaired. Mechanic said the wiring Ford uses has something in it that the rodents like and will go after time and time again. Better get some rodent control to prevent future problems.

Probably the same "sustainable" wire insulation Toyota used. Rodents love the stuff.
