Poor Bindi looked so scared and confused when you were telling them NO in a firm voice. Sometimes I forget just how young and inexperienced she really is. "Poor Bindi looked so scared and confused when you were telling them NO in a firm voice" That just goes to show not all dogs are made equal, but are individuals. Bindi has a very close attachment to Joe from a young age and is super determined to oblige to his commands, and that sometimes has a drawback where the dog will feel they've failed the trainer/owner when a negative command is given, which is then seen through their body language. This is especially true with dogs who have a high propensity to please their trainer/owner. PS. If you re-watch Joe's early training with young Bindi, it's obvious she's super eager to please.

My best guess is that the rat colony migrated somewhere else due to the lack of food or perhaps due to a mink nest in the vicinity, but they will probably come back next season. Rats are really smart, so you need to outplay them in these cases.
@JosephCartertheMinkMan
@JosephCartertheMinkMan Жыл бұрын
There was PLEANTY of food on the farm, and nowhere better to migrate. If they tried what you are suggesting, not only would it be unusual rat behavior, but it would be a certain death sentence to the rats. There is very limited food available in the surrounding forests, and LOTS of predators to clean them up! There wouldn't be any rats left to "come back next season" if they did this. Plus you have to realize that rats typically live less than a year even in IDEAL conditions..... the forest being an EXTREAMLY un ideal place for a rat to try and live.
@Rosielx
@Rosielx Жыл бұрын
@@JosephCartertheMinkMan uhm, if there is no other farm or waste treatment facility in at least 5km in the surroundings then you are right. I have seen cases of migrations un rural areas, and there are always trails you can identify that the rodents used (not a good idea to bring dogs for this since they destroy the trails), these are small circular paths within the grass, usually marked with waste, not much different to rabbits or wild guinea pigs' trails. Still difficult to believe that wild minks could destroy a thousand-rat colony so fast without further evidence.
@JosephCartertheMinkMan
@JosephCartertheMinkMan Жыл бұрын
@@Rosielx I agree, it's hard to believe one mink did it, but that's the only logical conclusion we could come to. The next closest farm or other food source is many many miles away. This farm is located in the middle of a state owned forest preserve.
@JosephCartertheMinkMan
@JosephCartertheMinkMan Жыл бұрын
by the way, I'm not trying to argue that our conclusion is necessarily right. I really can't say I know what happened to the rats with any kind of confidence whatsoever. I'm just providing the logic behind our tentative conclusion. We could very well be wrong, this is just my guess as to what happened. The theory that they just disappeared into the forest, though somewhat unlikely, is still possible. But like I said, if they did disappear in the forest, they just sealed their fait, and are highly unlikely to survive to return to this farm. An individual or two might come back from such a misadventure, but not much more than that is likely to survive more than a few weeks in the forest.
@Rosielx
@Rosielx Жыл бұрын
@@JosephCartertheMinkMan Absolutely. My other guess is that they found a sewer access somewhere close and they moved there for now. One last guess is perhaps that the rats died by disease, but the fact that there are no bodies or at least indicators of organic decomposition (black flies) denies the option that the colony died anywhere close.

The fact that you can train them to hone in on one scent in particular is a testiment to your skill as a trainer. You should do a UK tour, to educate people about the good side of Mink. Many people misunderstand them, and just want them gone- based only upon tittle tattle and stories passed on from one generation to the next. Although Mink are an invasive species in the UK, their population in the wild is steadily increasing, and they are here to stay!
@RoninCatholic
@RoninCatholic Жыл бұрын
Wild American Mink population in the UK is a result, of course, of environmentalists thinking animals don't belong in captivity and should never ever be put to practical use (pets, hunting animals, food, skinned for clothing) and setting them free accordingly with no care as to the consequences to the actual environment. Fortunately rather than just outright displacing the native polecat population which fits the same niche, they seem to be breeding into it and improving its genetic diversity with fresh blood.

I don't understand why nobody has mentioned this but mink/ferrets/weasels have scent glands- and if they get around in and about in enough holes/tunnels/ingresses/egresses they leave a scent behind that horrifies/discourages/repels rodents. That could obviously be the secondary- if not the primary reason the rats left: especially if the mink noticeably wreaked havoc and death enough that the rats collectively perceived it.
