AKAI addressed some of the cons with the 2.10 release. It now supports 32 simultaneous inputs and outputs using a class compliant USB audio interface (which is crazy nuts). It is amazing to see AKAI stand behind their products like this. I can't think of very many companies in this business that are as committed to long-term improvement and growth of their platforms. It truly is a hallmark of a company that takes professional musicians and their needs seriously.

@@1980VINZ the MPC X is a fabulous looking machine, my question for you is this. If I wanted to learn it from scratch how long would it take , and in your opinion, though it is very professional would you say it’s relatively easy , with a degree of concentration? Also...is it “really” the case that the MPC live is simply he fact that it’s portable, that’s the difference?...
@1980VINZ4 жыл бұрын
@@LanzaMartineta the MPCX has more possibilities about what you can plug on it etc. It’s a real complete standalone workstation who can replace a PC and all the hardware stuff around it. You can have only the MPCX in your studio as your centerpiece and plug everything on it to produce music from start to finish. (But you can also put the MPCX into your already existing home studio to control your PC for example) The others MPC have exactly the same software and software possibilities but not the same hardware possibilities. (In & Out, user interface etc.) Check this: www.mpc-tutor.com/mpc-buyers-guide-mpc-one-vs-mpc-live-ii-vs-mpc-x/ And about the learning, it depends on you. But it’s pretty clear, way more than old machines. BUT, the potential and features are so huge, I think we can learn it a whole life to master 100% its possibilities... I’m not a professional, I make music by pleasure, I’m learning everything by myself and the MPCX is my first one. If you are motivated and having time, you can do what you want, even if the beginning is a bit complex, of course. But with internet and KZbin (and obviously reading the user manual), you have all your answers. You should check tutorials on KZbin to give you an idea before buying, or check the AKAI website support. (You can download for free the user manual for example, or better, the QuickStart guide 😉) EDIT : I’m French so sorry if my English is weird...

Definitely makes it a lot more self contained. As far a portability, I wouldn't really take it out much unless maybe to a studio session somewhere , but for taking it outside my home studio and to another room in my house or out on my porch or lawn with my MKP Mini 2, its perfect.

man your reviews are really concise and well put togther - it's such a massive help, thanks! I think one of the main benefits I haven't seen anybody mention yet about having built-in monitor speakers is that taking regular breaks from using headphones is a really good thing for your ears (hearing). I'm not always wanting to produce at my desk where my monitors are, so I really like the addition of the speakers. I think this is one feature causing me to lean more towards spending the extra to get the Live 2, along with the other benefits of course. I think Akai are on it with the MPC line. +1 for the addition of connecting an audio interface, then can use mic pres and Hi-Z inputs for guitar!

@jonathansoko10853 жыл бұрын
Had the one for awhile now. So i solved the problem of not being able to expand the internal drive to an ssd by just getting a small usb drive with a ton of space and i basically rigged up a way to hook it to the side it to the side. Its obviously not quite as good but you almost cant even tell its there. Also SD cards being dirt cheap is also another way to go, i got like 5 256gb ones for under 50 bucks and ive recorded an entire album on the one standalone, vocals, mix and master all in the standalone box and it it didnt even fill up one 256gb card. If i had this in 1999 i woulda been mind blown that at 800$ you get a literal daw in a box that can mix master, sample, beat make sequence and record vocals...... under 1k$. Back then this probably woulda cost like 5000$. Important to note that the one now supports abelton live and you can finally access the SD card inserted into the mpc on the computer when in controller mode so you can now drag and drop files easily.

I don't see it mentioned much, but for those wondering how well the speaker is on the Live II - think of it as a decent soundbar. It carries a lot of bass that you can feel it, and the mid and highs are also very well represented. It's very much usable for sitting outside, on the couch, in bed and getting that hard-hitting lows that professional headphones can give. They did not skimp out here and put the cheapest speakers they could find. Obviously, you'll want to monitor down the road with your more "professional" set up for final mixes, but do not discount the speakers. This device is a portable groovebox all-in-one you can take with you camping, vacations, etc.

Excellent review as always! Some good additions in 2.8. Now, I'm just looking forward to audio streaming and the drum synth they've been teasing. I gotta say, I'm really annoyed about the speaker on the Live MK II. It makes a honking brick of a unit even bigger. I have speakers, Akai, and if I want to hook them up they're better than that one. I don't want to carry it with me when most of the time I'm using headphones. I feel like they did it just to justify the MK II label. They should have just made the hardware creature comforts the new 2.0 version going forward and left its at that instead of pretending they made a whole new product. Even worse, they tied the extra I/O to being stuck with that speaker. The Live's "portability" was already mostly a function whether you wanted to take it out badly enough to lug it around. It's brilliantly portable in the house, though! Beats on the couch, beats in the kitchen, beats on the porch... It makes the Live a great composition tool.

Really great review as always loopop! I owned the Mpc Live and now have the X and here’s my two cents from a user perspective: The Live mk I was already very heavy and big (considering an added carrying soft case) to be truly portable. It doesn’t fit in a “regular” back pack if you want to take much else along inside with it. It also was not very comfy in a tight space like an airplane seat (economy😅). The op-1 and deluge are much better options if you really want to be on the go, much more so now, with the added weight and size of the mk II. It’s a wonderful machine, but not really ever knowing what the q-links did and their page dependent behavior made them a workflow killer and almost unusable. They happily made them a bit better now with the 2.8, but not having dedicated physical buttons makes you overuse the screen, falling into an “ipad with pads” sensation, which many don’t enjoy (myself included). Finally, the position of the pads to the side of the screen feels awkward vs below it as in the One or the X. As for the Mpc X, even though it’s the same software, it truly feels like an entirely different machine and fulfilled every expectation I had when I bought the Live. The many buttons and led strips on the q links make everything extremely fast and intuitive, and I barely touch the screen at all. I say this because I feel that the availability of physical buttons and it’s workflow enhancement benefits are often underrated, mostly because having them there enables muscle memory to quickly kick in and makes the whole process more streamlined and natural. I can honestly say that the X is worth the price tag. Having said that, and knowing that the X is not in everyone’s budget, I would highly suggest getting the One with a portable battery and a mini midi keyboard like the arturia in your video over the Live (mk ii or mk i) if you want a portable and enjoyable MPC (it will probably be cheaper as well). Believe me that those extra buttons will make it worth your while. For those interested, in the next few weeks I’ll be posting a series of videos called “Sampler Wars” on my channel, making tracks with the same base audio samples on my MPCX, Octatrack mk2, Op-1, sp 404 and digitakt. The idea is to have a little fun while also comparing workflow, strengths and weaknesses, and end outcome, all from a practical, “regular user” point of view. Hope you check it out. Cheers!
@scotth42244 жыл бұрын
@Midlife - I appreciate your thoughts!! Having not used the MPC X, but owning the Live 1 & older MPC for many years, I know exactly what you’re saying. I’m not a big fan of touchscreens, but my biggest issue is not having that muscle memory you speak of....it’s soooo important with instruments and creative tools. The quicker you can translate an idea in your head to a sound on your instrument, the better (usually). I think companies & developers (like Akai w/ the modern MPC line) forget that this is a tool for making something. I could imagine them sitting in their office and focusing too much about what they can do, what they can add, what “gonna get all the kids talking”..... rather than seeing the whole picture and asking themselves (and real musicians) if their decisions actually make their music-computer-tool better or worse? When I’m looking at the MPC Live (1 or 2), I feel like they dropped the ball in this area. The Live seems to get in my way too much - and even after learning it well. My old MPC 1000 and 4000 took longer to really learn, but after that, using them was a much, much better creative experience, (when comparing to the Live). We can do all this stuff on our computers, so Akai, please remember why we’re paying extra to NOT use our computer all the time. If you make products that make me feel like I’m at work or at the ATM then I’m going elsewhere.... (I’ll admit, I haven’t used the MPC One, so it may be as simple as getting that) But when looking at the MPC X, Akai’s vision starts to make sense to me....it’s the device where they didn’t get rid of all the things that made the originals great....and Midlife, when you spoke about the physical layout and not having to use the touchscreen much, that’s exactly what I was hoping to hear :) At this point I think I’m just as likely to sell my MPC Live & move on, as I am to double down and buy an MPC X....but who knows.... Also.... Akai lost a lot of my trust when they originally released the MPC Live....with all its missing features.....I still kept it, and checked the forum daily for a while....but then I moved on and used the Live for maybe 1/3 of what I was hoping to use it for....also, it never feels good to support a company that releases half-finished products....Because , why wouldn’t they continue to do that?....they get your money either way....and one method is faster and cheaper.... Firmware 2.8 is a great update!!! It feels like the firmware this generation of MPC’s were meant to ship with....not WAY later and with the version 2 of their product.... BUT.... I am soooo excited for the MPC Live 3, with it’s electric toothbrush and an alarm clock!!! Who would have thought that the electric coffee warmer next to the speaker would be such a good idea??!! That said, my favorite feature of the Live 3 has to be the dog treadmill!! Now Sparky get his walk, and I make the soundtrack!! Ohhh Akai, the rest of them just don’t understand.... :)

Most people are mad that they purchased their Live 1 right before the release of the 2 and feel cheated. The negative comments is their way of dealing with it. Lol

The built-in spk is not that bad. The bass really surprised me.

Agreed with audio I/O. Would be great to use the unit as an effects processor for external instruments live, I do that with my Octatrack to process my synths (and use as a send return for external effects). And again, if they EVER implement disk streaming for long samples, then this really is the number one instrument for live bands of all kinds. I'm beginning to think it won't happen although I felt the same about multitimbral midi so who knows!

I can't believe more people aren't running with the format of the DJS 1000. I would love to have a synthesizer in that format.

I have the MPC One, love it and love the 2.8 update! The live 1 and 2 just do not do it for me. I agree with many other people, the speaker just isn't at all important for me, I have much better monitors and a portable Roland KC speaker that has much more kick. "If" I decide to upgrade I definitely will buy the MPC X.

+1 for a sound design video on the standalone plugin synths!

Thanks this helped me choose the original MPC Live. It has more connectivity than One but is 350 less than the 2. Ultimately that difference is not worth the speaker, cv and a few extra buttons since the first 2 are not necessary for me. I do think the One has a tremendous amount going for it especially ergonomically with the screen above the pads.

the thing I love the most about the One is its layout, similar to the old MPCs.

@@dammau2096 Yeah I think it's set up better no doubt.

MPC One should've had USB 3 and 2 Pair of MIDI I/Os! Also, I guess it 's not such a big deal, but why not include a ext. Hard Drive slot on the MPC One??? Oh well...I have it and I'm going to do all I can to get the most out of it and the 2.8 update! Thanks again for your vids!
@DJDoubleEdge4 жыл бұрын
@Daenerys Targaryen Yes Yes it does, but you can't deny having a slot for and ext/int hd. like they have o n the Live. That would be an added convenience.

i would buy a mpc live 2 just for portability reasons... what i really wish for the next generations of mpc is upgradeable ram and Cpu to make a monster that compeed in 3 years too (edit - is there a way to see the pitch of a sampled vocal? it would be superb if i could match a samples pitch on a very visual way not just shown in numbers... i have a way in mind , but i guess the engineers at Akai would come up with some nice visual solutions!)
