This deal is a lot of things - a cost-cutting move for Minnesota, a perfect fit for New York...and ultimately, a potential lose-lose for all involved.

Timberwolves getting insane flexibility for Ants prime and getting to pay their young talent while also being able to make another move or splash FA signing while adding one of the best contracts in the league is in no way a loss. Saying the league average offense will somehow get worse is absolutely wild after trading for a top great 3&D performer and McDaniels had a down year. Adding Dillingham off the bench as well as having Naz Reid in the second unit. Ingles has a good catch and shoot 3. I just don’t see how Minnesota after arguably having an improved offense won’t be a top 4 western seed.
@kevinlam4550

Cap flexibility doesn’t mean jack shit when you don’t attract free agents. No one is going to sign in Minnesota in free agency no matter how much money you have and how competitive you are as a team. They’ll sign someone(s) with that flexibility but it won’t be a star player and they’ll end up overpaying the players they sign to attract them.

Nah. With the loss of IHart and Robinson out till January NYK needed a center. Not only did they get one, but one of the most efficient on offense. It cost them a productive forward who was an awkward fit and a good 3D guard who was about to lose minutes. Not sure what to make of this for Minnesota. On the surface this could be a downgrade, but they still have Gobert, so i could see this still worling out for them this season. If nothing else they have more cap options next off-season.

I disagree - I think Minnesota's worst trade was the package they gave to UTAH to bring in Gobert so KAT didn't have to be center and minimize his defensive weakness. Trading Kat out is the best thing because it let's all the other guys develop, and outside of scoring, he doesn't bring much to the table. With Randle, at least you can put him in the post or he can get down the driving lane. On the flip side, why Knicks did it kind of doesn't make any real sense... they have no real post presence aside OG Anunoby and yes KAT had his best years with Thibodeau coaching him, but does that justify paying 50+ million for a guy who's basically a rich man's Ryan Anderson?

THE MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES ARE MAKING A HUGE MISTAKE BY TRADING KARL ANTHONY-TOWNS. The starting 5 is undeniably worse without KAT. This was a a top-five starting unit in the league, were the best defensive team in the Association for long periods, and were on the doorstep of the number one seed in the Conference. When replacing KAT with Naz Reid or Julius Randle in the starting lineup, it’s a clear downgrade in talent and star power. One could make a case for improved depth with the addition of Donte Divencenzo in the deal and the sweetener of the draft pick, but usually when you lose the star in the trade it’s not a good sign - and this is certainly a net negative in that respect.
