I think the Chinese should have gone with the Steam catapults as originally intended and transition to EM catapults when they have the nuclear-powered carrier. It would have taken less time too. China must have a checklist of 1000 different functions to be tested. They probably use all the typical project management tools (waterfall charts, milestone charts, problem tracking and planned resolution on time schedule charts, etc)
@douginorlando62602 ай бұрын
My biggest question about China’s management style is regarding upgrades and design freezes. Western management focuses on reaching a hard design freeze where no improvements are allowed and instead are deferred to follow-on upgrade contracts. This works well for companies because they get the government to sign off as completed a contractural requirement even if it will have to be immediately upgraded/replaced to be effective. But China may not be driven hard by lawyers, accountants and managers who have perverse incentives to allow/encourage wasted effort that will have to be redone under a new sole-source contract later. China may empower their engineers to approve common sense design changes as soon as they are obviously needed instead of wasting effort. This ties into being more flexible about design changes even after the design freeze.

Given real-time evolution of drone warfare on land, in air, and at sea in Ukrainian war, are there discussions among PLA ofcionados on dedicated drone/anti-drone ships maybe based on something like the 054B FFG or even repurpose and modify the six 052C DDGs?
@EurasiaNaval2 ай бұрын
Hi Tony, China has certainly started to build purpose-built drone ships. The Type 076 LHD is generally expected to have a fixed-wing complement of high-end drones. The drone carrier and rotary drone carrier we saw previously in a Yangtze shipyard are other examples, although these are probably used as targets during naval exercises. There are also non-military drone ships like the Zhu Hai Yun, and conceivably there might be a non-declared military role. As for how far the PLAN will go in terms of drone ships, only time will tell, particularly with respect to how many 076 LHDs they will acquire. In terms of drone defences, there are no dedicated anti-drone warships per se (although there are certainly land-based anti-drone systems). This is still a new field of naval warfare, and in my view the effective countermeasures against different types of drones are quite different. Against larger and more expensive high-end drones, traditional area air defences onboard destroyers should still be effective like they would be against fixed-wing aircraft. Against small drones, long-range SAMs are not going to be economical, so you probably need to rely on cheaper close-range munitions like dual-purpose guns, short-range SAMs and electronic jammers. These are present already on ships to an extent. Against surface drones, lower end defences like cannons and machine guns (possibly rocket launchers), combined with EW jammers, might suffice. Different existing assets in the PLAN will be effective against different drone threats. One thing to note about small surface drones is that they have proven to be less effective in the Ukraine War as time goes by. Initially, they have had lots of successes, disabling Russian warships like the Admiral Makarov in port. But the Russians have become quite good at countering these drones over time with electronic jamming, low-end weapons, and targeting drone operators and training facilities. These counters didn't seem to require that big of an investment on the part of the Russians, just more experience in fighting these drones. So, I am quite skeptical if surface drones are really a game changer as their initial success in Ukraine suggests. This is even more so if you shift the operating environment to the vast Pacific where drone operators cannot be as close to their targets as they are in the Black Sea.

China can build a highway in a week, which takes years for America, and it has the most shipyards worldwide. The minute they decided to focus all their efforts on being a leading naval power, then America & the West naval dominance would be done for. Moreover, China's failure to make aircraft may be part of the war strategy. They know the fight will be taken to them, so having tons of carriers would be a waste of resources. Much wiser to make systems that can destroy anything people throw at them and have mines & drones in the water to keep Western powers at a comfortable distance.

If they did launch any aircraft they would be boasting like crazy. Also if they did this they would be showing video of it. All BS their launch mechanism will either work well and rip off the undercarriage of the aircraft or simply throw the aircraft into the water. Super carrier is quite a misnomer for this carrier it’s a facade.

We have Brahmos missiles with her name on it. Should she come 300 kms from our launch bases she will be a black sinking wreck in less than 7 minutes!

300 kilometers is too short. It is even inferior to China's rocket launchers, thus Brahmos lags behind.
