Trying to blow up my 600HP Turbo AWD H
onda Civic the night before the big race.
I was having some issues with the Civic on the 2 step launch control sputtering so I decided to test the compression on it. Even fully warmed up it was less than 10psi... Stay tuned as I diagnose the issues and see what the problem is.
We also got a sick setup from Vein Engine Stands to mound one of my spare k24 swaps so its easy to move around the shop!
The setup on the car is a stock k24a2 with h beam connecting rods, stock pistons, everything else, Garrett gtx3582r gen 2 turbo, Ecu master EMU BLACK standalone ECU, Full deatschwerks fuel system with 2200cc injectors, 600hp tune by PFI Speed, and a Hub City Performance awd Kit

"I HOPE THAT YOU SEE THIS COMENT" I would still pull the head off and measure valve stem length make sure you didn't stretch your valve causing the valve adjustment to go out of adjustment with the higher RPM and the stock valves there's a potential to stretch the valve which can lead to the valve actually breaking the stem off and dropping a valve in the motor. I've seen this happen many times before.

I would pull the head anyway just to make sure, a head gasket is cheaper than an engine.

I feel like the valve lash adjuster tightening up enough, to hold the valve open, without being caused by valve or valve seat damage, would be physically impossible. Pulling the head is a must. As well as, pulling the entire valvetrain for a complete inspection.

Not so much stretching the valve stem as the contact surface of the valve seat becomes deformed allowing the valve to plunge Deeper into the seat and you loose valve lash.

Most definitley do the CRX build. I am a huge fan of the 88-91 civic/crx and they have become so scarce due to rust and molestation. Any crx/civic from that area deserved to be saved from rotting in a field in my opinion. Plus already having the k series swap parts and you likley have kpro from the yellow civic laying around... I know you dont want to do another paint job especially on a car that will likley need rust work done but it would be fire content. I for one would sign up for a paid members only content on that build.

I've had the exact same thing happen on two k24's, both times it was an exhaust valve on cylinder 2. Not sure of the exact cause, but everything was fine with just a valve adjustment.

There's a harmonic node on that cylinder culminating all vibrations to that point, harmonic balancer needs tuned to new operating rpm.

I was saying pull the valve cover and check the valve lash. I have seen that happen so many times. That's the first thing to check if your compression is low on one cylinder.

You might consider checking valve stem heights above spring seat to make sure you don't have a stretched valve. I have seen valves readjusted that were stretched and then dropped a valve. Air up cylinder and it's easy to check with a stem gauge. Good luck.

@motionautotv make sure to check the valve lash every few months or so if not earlier. Especially with you high revving a k24. With the exhaust cam being non vtec the valves on that side of the head will all tighten up as the intake valves will loosen up. I had an idle issue with my boosted 9th gen where it would just die after idling for a few seconds and would struggle to restart. Turned out the lash tightened up enough for the all of the exhaust valves to be peaked open. So this is a common issue on the k24’s

Im thinking ringland or exhaust valves burnt up is my guess before you take it apart. You are correct about it being rich when it's down a hole because it doesn't burn the fuel all the way. Do a leak down test.

I agree with a few of the other comments the valves have stretched or the seat has gotten deeper into the head adjusting the valves is temporary you better turn down the limiter and once they strech they are weaker could still fail

It will chooch out the breathers or valve cover pcv hole if you break a ringland or piston. So I think the pistons are fine it's something with the head.

Crx build yes please. Gut out the interior the extra weight will only slow the car down. Instead of a turbo build maybe do the K24 on throttles. Something you guys dont see every day. Here in South Africa we use the Toyota 4AGE 20v throttles on a large number of builds. Just a suggestion. P.S. The 48mm ones make amazing noises and should still make over 250Hp N/A.

you should probably do some research on why valve lash all of a sudden becomes super tight. head needs to be pulled and new seats installed. As well as springs and very possibly valves.

Nice theory on rich. 02 sensors read oxygen though not fuel. So if it was missing wouldn’t it still read lean... Because of the unburnt oxygen not on burn fuel

now you need to figure out why the lash was taken up and tight. my theory is the valve is tulip and or the valve seat is receeding

Yeah probably that because it was the exhaust valves on cylinder #2 and they tend to tighten overtime...or he didnt check the valve lash when he swapped heads. Who knows, that could also be the first time that that head has had a valve adjustment.
