The American Express Platinum is a polarizing credit card. For some, it's a complete waste of money but for others there's no other way to enhance travel experiences. But at $890 a year? Can I keep it?

This was hands down the best review of this card. People don’t understand the value you get for having gold status with Marriott and Hilton. The room upgrade alone has given me $1000 to $1500 in value a year. This card can tremendously enhance your travel experience. If you travel a lot it’s a must have!

I’m a big fan of capital one right now but I’ll be honest - at least the platinum credits mitigate the annual fee. The chase sapphire reserve had just as many coupons but no one uses them and very few folks can make sense of that $550 AF. No offense but your post reads like a parrot. 🦜. Amex cards are a huge pain in the butt sometimes but to say they don’t bring tangible valuable benefits is laughable. I’m guessing you either don’t travel or you prefer economy no frills travel. In that case I can understand.

You can parrot and still be right about something. If you're a high end business traveler sure, amex makes sense, you probably don't care about the $700 fee anyway. If you're middle class, trying to get the fee to pay for itself *without* doing things you wouldn't normally do (eg stay at high end hotel properties when you're normally Holiday Inn) then not worth it. You're both right and you both sound like parrots. 😉

I easily get $2k+ in benefits from the Plat card. Plus I have been a member for over 30 years. Only way I will “give it up” is if I get a Centurion offer or they introduce a premium card in between the Plat and Centurion, which I hope they do. Everyone has a Plat card these days and that has diluted its “prestige.”

I think people are wising up that this card is not for everybody. The best benefit is 5X flights and lounge access. If you are posing as a traveler, its extremely hard to justify it to yourself. Most people do not see an airport more than twice a year.

I will be keeping my card. I received an upgrade at the hotel and I used the lounge in Dallas. It wasn’t that crowded and it was nice to be able to relax and eat while waiting on your flight. I used some of the other perks as well that works for me. I love your videos.

I received $1800 in value from a perk you didn’t mention! The car rental benefits. I booked the cheapest option for my Denver trip and thanks to the Hertz President Circle status I was able to choice a big boy Denali. Not only did I not have to waste $34.99/day on their insurance thanks to the Amex platinum perk, but I also found an 18K gold bracelet stuck inside the steering wheel column. I never would have received so much value without my platinum card 🤣🤣🤣

Love this video Luke! I plan to add the Platinum later in the year, and obviously I'll get significant Y1 Value, but still questioning on whether it's a long-term solution for me, so was great to hear your perspective on why you are ultimately keeping it. I'll be accelerating my travel with more work trips and personal ones of course, and so would be able to utilize the Hotel Credit, already use Hulu Live Sports (Digital Entertainment Credit), suck at cooking so order a couple times from food delivery services😂 etc. but to top it off, there's a really nice Centurion Lounge in Seattle, so I think it'd be worth it at least for now.. (I'll just have to decide on adding my wife as an AU as well since 75% of the time we travel together, so lounge access). Great video!

It does sting when the annual fee hits your billing statement, but if you travel frequently and have a lounge at your home airport, it makes so much sense to have the Amex Platinum. I would begin to get annoyed about the charge each time to bring your little dude into the lounge. No way he gets $30 in value. I guess that is just one of the challenges of family travel.

Mostly agree, except for lounges, never used them before, when I could bring my family, they were either closed already, not opened yet or simply line was like line in Vatican. Now, when I have to pay for family I will never even try, so this is huge minus for me. Priority, I have from Capital One and not only for myself, but for everyone in my family.

Great overview and great value Uncle Luke! In my case the value get is 240 Digital, $200 Incidental, $200 Hotel, $189 Clear (Vet discount-added wife) and $100 Global Entry (mine + 3 free AUs) for a total of $929. In my case I don’t value Saks, Walmart, Equinox or any status. Lounge access is difficult to put a value but I use the benefit like 6-10 times yearly.

Great video, and very fairly addressed! I agree with all of this. My only frustration is that I have two kids to pay to get into the lounge. I only got my P2 an AU card because amex offered me 10k MR pts to do so. Plus, for some reason, they only charged me $175. So now I can get her global entry and lounge access. I live near SEA, which has a great centurion and skyclub lounge. So after one year, I might take her off and use priority pass to take them to the lesser club lounge for free and use my airline credit to get all of us into the skyclub lounge a couple times per year. I've flirted with the idea of dropping them off at a priority pass lounge while I visit the amex lounge but I don't know if I could get away with that.

Having an AU makes this card a bit more expensive for me, but it just offers so much value that its hard to beat. Lounge access is a big deal for me since we always end up eating at the airport anyways and P2 enjoys the food and comfort as well haha. Credits for me are all great aside from saks being annoying. And as a gym-goer, I've yet to ever see an equinox... I know there has to be one somewhere down here near miami. Cant imagine the price of a membership if the credit is 300 bucks 😅

I couldn't agree more that the AMEX Platinum is staying in my extended wallet this year. I have consistently gotten between $1000-1200 value over the last few years. My wife's setup at Schwab gives her the Schwab Platinum with a $200 credit towards the annual fee. Her value is even better, and therefore, we have two Platinum cards.

Honestly I never considered the Platinum card, but I went on Amex and some of those hotel collection hotels aren't actually that badly priced, there's even bunch for under $200 a night. I could see myself knock out that credit with a weekend trip somewhere with friends, and that $100 property credit is the cherry on top. Also I saw you can use the United travel bank for the airline credit since I always carry on. I also have Hulu, and take at least one to two Uber rides a year. If I pick up Clear, that'll put me ahead. I have some expensive car repairs coming up, and that 175k SUB is tempting. Might either get this card or the Altitude Reserve.

As much as I'd like to cancel this card each year, the net value I gain from it always holds me back. Between the Hulu bundle, CLEAR, UberEats (I've come to quite enjoy that over-priced once-a-month Chipotle macros bowl), a fancy two night hotel stay each year with the resort credit, day passes to the Alaskan Airlines lounge (their annual lounge pass is expensive and Alaskan stopped offering complimentary lounge access with first class tickets), Walmart + (the fact that I can have items delivered for free within a few hours as well as being able to earn Walmart cash and Rakuten credit on each order in addition to the free Paramount + subscription) and that biannual Saks credit to buy grooming products to make a bear feel sexy, it's a reluctant no-brainer. If you're also able to utilize a couple of offer credits per year, which I usually do, that's the cherry on top. The only cards I keep with AMEX are this one, the BCP (if you're a UFC fan and you use the HBO Max offer credit each year, this card pays for itself), the Hilton Aspire, and the Delta Business Reserve. Unlike the gold card, the plat actually offers unique perks that justify keeping it. Hilton gold and Centurion / Delta lounge access is a solid deal, and because most of the credits are annual / subscription, they're actually easy to use. The real question is 2025 after the expected annual fee hike.

Officially? The Amex website. Unofficially, you’ll need to research. There are some different ways that may/will/should trigger the credit. Normally if some of these are published they end up getting shut down

There are two main reasons why I am not a big fan of this card, first is I wish the Streaming credit would cover more platforms. Let's say KZbin/KZbin TV. Second is the hotel points. I wish it would include not only prepaid hotels. The coupon book isnt too bad as long as it doesn't change your spending habits. Great video Uncle Luke!

I'm about to cancel the crap out of this card. I got a retention offer of $200 for spending $3000 in a month. I did that. Then they put a $195 charge for my daughter being an authorized user. It's my last year. Great reasoning as alway. I sympathize for sure. When they went up on the AU cost last year, it made me seriously consider keeping it or getting rid of it. I sat down and did the math like you and realized it was cheaper for me to pay for my kid's lounge use when they travel with me (infrequent) than making them paid AU. Still tons of things on it they can improve, like increasing the multipliers in car rentals since it is a "travel thing", increasing multipliers on restaurants/gas/grocery stores abroad, and even trying to expand their network of FHR abroad. It is not jut Amex, but most cards when labeled as a "travel card" in reality it is "a travel in the US mostly card". I know the Green card is the perfect compliment to 2 out the 3 suggestions above, but that is another $150/year for that!! This is where other cards come in play to supplement without yearly costs (Savor, Autograph, etc), even if they are just cash back cards. Keep up the good material!!

For me, the platinum card is not worth it. Why? 1. None of my frequent airports has any centurion or escape lounges. ( So any other card with Priority and Plaza Premium lounge works fine for me) 2. The platinum is 100% a lifestyle and travel convenience card. It is not a value card at all. I have it because lifestyle and travel convenience make the difference for me. YMMV

Yh…the platinum isn’t for me BUT I’m still willing to try it out. My Amex contact actually told me that this card is really designed for those who travel at least 4x per month. Other than that, it really isn’t suited for the vast majority of the population. It’s good to hear that you can get value out of a lot of the credits which makes it easier for you to justify it.

Would you be doing these things anyway? No, I'm not normally staying at a 4 star hotel. No I don't use streaming. No I don't use Uber monthly. So let's add up for me.. $200 airline credit. Play the Delta gift card game, got 1 way plane ticket. Lounge access is nice, but I wouldn't pay it otherwise. Just about everything else, none of the other coupons would I be buying without the card. So yeah, after 1 year, it's now bye bye. And 1X points? Fuh get about it. I'm stuck with CSR since I just paid that, at least that's $300 no brainier credit on any airline, train, bus, or parking pass. Primary rental insurance. Priority Pass lounge. check. $550 - $300 travel credit $250 for other perks. At least 3X on dining and travel. Honestly though, when renewal comes up, I'm almost certainly going with Venture X. $400 and about all same benefits and 2X points? OK
