Always good to challenge our past selves and see how our tastes have evolved over the years.

Zeppelin never played this the same way live twice. That's the mark of a truly great band.

These guys were the kings of improvising and yes there are mistakes at times but it's because it's so raw!! Pure talent

I definitely feel that, I do enjoy improvisation even though it can feel a little disjointed at times.

I was/am a big Led Zeppelin fan. I was in my late teens when they started getting known. So all the music of theirs that I heard was straight out of the studio, on the radio. I bought their albums, played them over and over. Then I had a chance to see them in 1973, and although the concert was fun in some ways, I was disappointed in other ways. Robert Plant did not hit the high notes I liked so much on their studio versions, and they didn't play the songs as I knew them. Not exactly, for sure, but in some cases not even close. Page was really good, but improvised a lot. Jones and Bonham were great. I later figured out that Plant probably couldn't hit those high notes night after night on tour and keep his voice. But he made a lot of other changes, too. Bottom line, I never watch a video of the live shows. I still listen to the studio stuff, and I still love it.

"look to the west...." this section of the song is referencing the difference between the materialistic society to that of the "hippie communes" (at that time in history) where groups walked away from "the norm" and lived in peace and harmony where everybody worked together for the benefit of the whole and materialistic excess wasn't even a thing. "...those who stand looking" are those like him who are watching and thinking about a simpler life. "spring clean for the may queen" refers to nature coming back to life as the winter is ending. ever heard of the old saying -- "april showers bring may flowers"? this is just a reference to the changing climate both in nature and society. Absolute Genius level lyrics. people have been debating the meaning of this song for over 50 years now. other than introducing the song in concert as "a song of hope" the band has stayed quiet.

Mistakes? What makes you think there were mistakes? Jimmy always improvises live. He doesn't try an exact recreation of the studio version.

It's live, of course it's improvised.

I personally prefer the hell out of the studio version. I get that some people would like the more jam session feel of this but yeah
@JabbyMayoCD Жыл бұрын
Yeah most people were suggesting this specific performance, but I don’t remember the studio version well at all since it’s been so long since I heard it. The solo feels a little disjointed at times, but I do appreciate improvisation as well.

@JabbyMayoCD Led Zeppelin plays with feel. They didn't search for perfection. They explored new territory.
