Something happened with my audio levels in OBS so the music is a lot quieter than usual. Either way, be sure to check out their video!

The thing Steve did in the beginning of his part was joint shifting. He was bending each string separately while holding down and playing/bending the other strings at the same time. ( for a closer look, check out 'candle power' in your own time, he does a close-up shot of him joint shifting. For the whammy bar stuff, 'whispering a prayer' is a brilliant example of his control over it. Such a good emotional song.

I definitely need to check those out, this is legit the first time I’ve heard of joint shifting.

Vai & the band were in a videocall on Polyphia's channel, Tim said he used to "tapdance pedals", now the effects are triggered automatically via midi. They all play along to a track with effects programming along with other audio elements. Runs off a laptop near the drummer.

It's all done via tracking with computers. Everything is timed out and switches seamlessly throughout the song. Basically all effect pedals and all that jazz are done in a program.

Polyphia typically use Axe FX for their rigs so all they'd really need is a midi controller and they could easily change the sounds on the fly. I also remember hearing something about some new thing that they're using to make switching even easier live but I don't remember the details. Either way, they've been on tour for a while already so there are plenty of examples of them playing their new songs live on KZbin.

I’m eventually going to have to check out some of their live stuff to get a better idea of how they do stuff like that.

Real time fx are done via midi on an axe fx to get the perfect sound on time for a set.

Does he control it live or does he have a tech that does it? I can’t imagine having the coordination to do that while playing something like this.

Real time tone changes would be done by having a bigass pedal board and tapdancing on that bitch, or more modern solution would be running off a laptop with a midi exchanger/controller, which is what they would most likely use as I've seen them live and there was no pedal stomping going on.

All whammy bars can go low and high.....

Not all, depends on the kind you have. My guitar only has a bar that can be pushed down.
