and they can do this live ... there are some videos on their home page where it's not a music video, just them playing in their 'practice studio' doing mostly covers, and they are perfect ... one of the bands they do a couple of covers of are 'Hello Sleepwalkers', a slightly milder 5 piece band that IMO is on part with Band-Maid for writing listenable songs ... more punk/progressive than Band-Maid (not a knock on either of them, they are 2 of my favorites ... I lean to Band-Maid mostly because of Band-Maid's live shows are better produced.)

A cool thing to know is this band actually started as a cover band of Ling Tosite Sigure (TK's band, the guy who did the 8th ending of Chainsaw man), the reason they are a 3 piece band with a female bassist is actually just to be the same as Ling Tosite Sigure which had the same kind of lineup. And if you're familiar with both bands you'll see a lot of musical similarities. The difference between what became the style of Sokoninaru compared to Ling Tosite Sigure is that Sokoninaru goes over the top a bit with the rhythm changes/guitar/bass tapping and all that while LTS does that less intensly and also that LTS goes more to post rock and post hardcore stuff on top of the prog rock
@ItsZekken

Well, I've seen the LTS comparisons with both Sokoninaru and tricot and in both cases I thought they were exaggerated... can't say I was particularly impressed with LTS whenever I tried listening to them. Also note that Sokoninaru have serious metal influences -- the first mini-album sounds like they took all of 80s metal, compressed it and took it into the 21st Century. So Sokoninaru are influenced by those things, but the proper way, where you take different influences, mix them, then take them to the next level.

Great band, that are so under-rated. They obviously don't appeal to the masses, but what they do, they do so well. Within all the chaos and abrupt pauses there is always a melody that you can hook onto and their vocals just seem to go together so well.

Finally, a musician is checking out Sokoninaru. It usually takes time before someone reacts to this band. They are in my top 5 Japanese bands (with BAND-MAID, Gacharic Spin, DOLL$BOXX and MTH) and I have most of their albums

Clearly a man of good taste!! I'd add Trident, Suspended 4th, Polkadot Stingray, Tricot and Arukara. That might be my top 10 jrock bands (in no particular order)!
@MaartenT
@MaartenT Жыл бұрын
@@dearkazuscorner2549 I would personally keep a couple of them out of there and have only heard of Suspended 4th by name and haven't heard Arukara yet (first time hearing about them). But I would wholeheartedly put Tricot among my favourites the last couple of months (after really disliking them first). I still haven't heard a lot of their early stuff though. The same goes for Sokoninaru, I didn't really enjoy this one the first time but while I might not have them as high as both of you I do like them a lot nowadays, but not as something I would listen to every day. The main one I am missing from both of your lists is Asterism (and Nemophila to some extent, but I know a lot of people don't like harsh vocals as much). As someone who has listened to a lot of black metal and death metal the last 15 years and metal in general the last 20+, I might actually enjoy well done harsh vocals more than cleans myself. Mine would probably include Band-Maid, Asterism, Gacharic Spin, Tricot, MTH, Nemophila and maybe Polkadot Stingray (I prefer their earlier stuff) and Unlucky Morpheus (preferably their songs that aren't as much power metal). All great choices though and I agree that I am always looking forward to musicians discovering bands like Sokoninaru because of how complex they can get.

@@MaartenT Tricot - great musicians and some really catch songs but whiny vocals make me stay away - never could finish any one of their MV's. Polkadot - great musicians, some great song, but too vocalist focused (turns me off, I have no idea who the other members are) and again typical Japanese whiny vocals. Nemophila - amazing musicians (I love Tamu and Saki and I know the names of all the members), some great songs - don't like Mayu's vocals so I don't listen to them too much. Love B-M, U-M, Lovebites, Asterism, Gacharic, Doll$Box, MTH, etc. They don't have your typical Japanese whiny vocals. And they don't singularly focus on the singer. Trident gets a bit close to whiny vocals but not 100% and they have some awesome banger of songs - I really appreciate their earnestness. I would listen to someone like Mei Kuraki, Misia or KIRINJI first before Tricot. And even with my preference of rock/hard rock (ergo why my favorite band is Band-Maid). It's really unfortunate because I do find some of Tricot and Polkadot's songs really good. I've been listening to Japanese music for a long time. My favorite Japanese vocalist is Nakamori Akina. She is a goddess. No, she does not have whiny vocals. My Japanese guitar hero is Masayoshi Takanaka.
@MaartenT
@MaartenT Жыл бұрын
@@fastskipper777 I get that. The vocalists are usually also my least favourite part of a lot of bands (in general), but especially for Japanese bands. I actually prefer instrumental music or harsh vocals myself. That said, I do enjoy the vocals in tricot, not really sure why. I can see why you find them whiny though. I personally love Band-Maid and they are my favourite Japanese band (and Saiki is what made me stick around in the beginning), but I find some of their songs whiny as well (Daydreaming is probably the most notable one). The same goes for some of Lovebites songs (and power metal in general), it took a long time for me to enjoy their music mostly because of Asami and their more "epic" power metal songs and melodies. I love their more thrashy songs and they have certainly grown on me over time. I am looking forward to their upcoming album. But it's all personal choice obviously. Fuki's vocals were quite an acquired taste for me (in everything I have heard her in). I typically enjoy her live stuff more, but it's still not something I love every day. I generally prefer lower range vocals over high pitched ones myself. I am not convinced I would like Unlucky Morpheus as much as I do if it weren't for the other musicians (and especially Jill). It's also the reason why I wouldn't put Doll$boxx in my top 10 and I would put Gacharic Spin in there. I do love their main projects more, D$B is a little too synthy for my taste, but I still enjoy it. I do like them way better live though. I understand where you are coming from on Polkadot Stingray (I am not a huge fan of their latest, way poppier, album). I think the main reason why it feels like their music is focused on the vocalist is because she created the band herself, writes almost everything herself and does a lot of extra things (like directing their videos, making the artwork, ...). It feels like there is a lot of focus on her because she basically is that band even though the other 3 are amazing musicians in their own right. For Nemophila: I love Mayu's vocals, but I can see why she is not for everybody (especially if people don't like harsh vocals). I just realised I missed one band that I really like (talking about vocalists with rasp), Glim Spanky has (imo) an amazing vocalist. As far as Trident goes, I honestly don't think she is a great vocalist and there is a huge amount of production and pitch-correction on her vocals. I still have to watch my DVD of theirs, that might change my mind, but the vocals are by far my least favourite part of their music (together with the overproduction). But I also really like some of their songs and they are talented musicians. I would love it for their bassist to get more time to shine, she is really good. I haven't heard of the other musicians you talked about as far as I know. I am still relatively new to this scene (about 2 years now) not counting Senri Kawaguchi's stuff and some Japanese metal bands I listened to 15 years or so ago (but they are not really this scene). But this all shows how diverse the whole Japanese rock and metal scene is and why it's so fascinating to dive into for me. There are so many bands and there are basically bands for everyone's taste.

@@MaartenT Hey, thanks for your detailed reply. I totally agree with you. A lot of it comes to personal taste. None the less, I highly recommend that you delve into different genre of Japanese music. There are so many amazing bands and singer that I can't even count. Do try out a few songs from Akina Nakamori (80's super idol singer; she has several album sale records) - she is an amazing singer. >>> kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2SUZ4CAdsiAp7s (this set was in 1987, she was 22 yrs old - can you find another 22 yr old singer who can do this with her vocals and her charisma now days? I don't know one). And Masayoshi Takanaka (Fusion Jazz Rock guitarist) - he is NOT really a singer and fronts a band, used to fill stadiums in 80's and 90's. The guy started as a pro in late 70's and still performs! Crazy. >>> kzbin.info/www/bejne/l16ll6CMna6nias (Takanaka playing his song with Santa at Yokohama Stadium 1981).

Great that you visit Sokoninaru, great suggestion! Yes, they are amazing and most surprising of all (as almost always happens with Japanese bands) they sound even better live. The core of the band is Juko Suzuki (one of the best guitarists out there right now) and the excellent Misaki Fujiwara (that thumb tapping is a very distinctive thing of hers). The curious thing is that, given how tremendously prominent the drums are in their compositions, they have changed drummers three times... and each time they have found a better one! In Japan they must grow from trees... In this song the drummer is Shiyu, in the actual formation plays Shoto Saito... who is vocalist too!. Thanks Tony, very good video!

Glad to see you react to my favorite band. They're the most original band I've heard in the last twenty years, in part because none of their songs sound the same. In a sense, they're the exact opposite of bands like Band-Maid, Nemophila, and Lovebites, who are good because they consistently do their stuff at a high level. These guys are consistently inconsistent in an auditory sense, but their level of playing is always consistently among the best of the best. My favorite of theirs is "Complicated System," but you can't go wrong with anything they do -- including their purposefully traditional songs like "Emerald Green" (J-rock), "Indelible Time" (Electronic rock), "Metalin" (Metal), and "White For" (Rock ballad). The songs that sound more like this one are "Gou Ni Myo", "Zettaiteki Sanpunkan", "re:program", "Kyokugen Ha Setsuna", "vermisst", and "Saitei". 啓蒙して、尋常に is a new one that sounds like their version of a J-rock song, and it's in its own category -- even for them. They've also got a live recording of their song "VortEx" which is a fantastic one as well. Regardless, hope to see more of your reactions to them soon; and, thanks for taking your time to do this one.

Here’s a live version of tenohiradeodoru (dancing in the palm of one’s/your/my hand) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gabUXn9_pr-Hj5I And here’s a drum playthrough from the MV session - kzbin.info/www/bejne/omibq5-Go8yAfNU Try Lament Moment, too - kzbin.info/www/bejne/amPCmn6CqbeBfac They also do many, many covers songs. One favorite is"Yoru ni Kakeru" (夜に駆けるlit. "Racing into the Night"), by the duo YAOSOBI. The original song is keyboard based, so sokoninaru’s cover sounds refreshingly different. - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqSYd5tsm9tld5Y

They do a babymetal cover which is a hoot - they make it their own of course and somehow both celebrate and diss the original. Just by covering it with a three piece is a huge flex.

I absolutely adore this band ❤ So insanely talented and just seem like lovely people too. I highly recommend the songs Gou Ni Moyu and the more recent Saite with their new full member drummer after like 4 years with the same (insanely good) support drummer. New drummer sings too so you get all 3 doing beautiful harmonies while going insane on the instruments. They just define mind blowing.

BTW there’s a fairly recent drum “battle” for this song between this previous support drummer and their new drummer. Definitely worth checking out. Both are just insanely good.

I've been searching in YT to see if anyone has done a reaction/review of any soundtrack from Call Of Duty Mobile, and since I just discovered your channel I wanted to leave that suggestion. I was surprised at some of the videos on their official channel showing how they use a real orchestra band to record their soundtracks.

In the parts where they seem to slow the tempo, they are playing triplets, but grouping them in pairs, 1-2-1-2-1-2. For more polyrhythmic goodness and great musicianship, check out the group Haisuinonasa (ハイスイノナサ) with their songs 地図にない街 (The city not on a map), and logos.

Thank you very much for such an awesome reaction on this song! If there's any band out there to fall down the rabbit hole, with THIS IS THE BAND. Sokoninaru has truly changed how I listen to music.Their creativity and technical talent is so far beyond what most bands can do that they are truly in a universe of their own. They can take multiple elements and genres and crush them together any way they want. You want pop? They can do that. Thrash Metal? No problem. Combine different time signatures? Anytime you want. Hell they have a song on a Christmas album that is unbelievable: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIGcZKRup99obdE Again, thank you for a truly great job of explaining this for folks that are not musicians and don't understand what's happening under the hood. Keep going!

I should have seen them again in Tokyo, a fortnight ago, but things were against. I saw them live in London in 2019 and was a fan for life. They are even better live. Yes, really. I would have seen them in Vienna in March 2020 but the world was just on lockdown.
