There is a book called "The Black Cloud" by the famous astronomer Fred Hoyle, in which astronomers first noticed a large black object approaching the Earth because it was blotting out the stars. They tried to keep their knowledge a secret from governments to avoid terrorising the world's population. The book not only has engaging characters and a superb plot, but is based on real physics. The approaching black object is not a black hole but an alien life form.

Aside from the ... _extremely questionable_ black hole science going on, I think the best thing this book could have done just from your description is to put the twist at the front of the book. That way you can get the drama out of the reader being confided in the real goal of "there is only one seat on this spaceship" and then watching Vega trying to keep this a secret from the others and struggle in her self-justification as to how she can abandon these people. I think this is a big weakness these kinds of plot twists run into over and over again - you value the shock of the twist over telling a good story. Keeping this kind of information from the audience just hurts the stakes. The only explanation too I can think of regarding the time travel at the end is using the black hole's massive amounts of gravity to travel through spacetime warping. But I've only ever heard of this kind of time travel about being able to go forward rather than backward (essentially the closer you get to a black hole, then the slower time seems to you). Not sure how that's going to help our girl except by going so far forward in time everyone's forgotten your big fuck up :)

What’s funny is that consumption is the old word for tuberculosis, which was historically associated with vampires because of how it made people wither away (like they were being consumed by something). So vampires would have made a lot more sense, actually. (I am losing it at this book’s black hole logic. I am going to pass away. I am crossing the event horizon, let it consume me. There still could have been a twist with the black hole and them not being on Earth but have it make more sense. Then it could have been a mental battle the entire book where she feels herself falling for Noah but she knows there’s only one seat in the ship and that could’ve established their relationship more because she would be trying not to fall for him but wouldn’t be able to help herself

I think one of the wildest aspects is, as you mentioned in the beginning, this entire story takes place in 2-4 weeks. So Vega falls just soooo deeply in love with Noah in maybe a couple weeks. the structure problems should have been caught so much earlier. like I don't know if this author plans her books, but even if you have the idea for the twist and then conceptualise how it would actually go in the novel you might notice 90% of the book becomes filler. it has a simple fix too! just move the twist up in the timeline, make part of the reveal be a first or second act twist or something. that way theres actual stakes and less of an info dump.

Maybe I missed but did they ever say why the first astronomer didn’t just leave on the ship then. Why did they have to wait till the black hole was closer?? If the plan was always to abandon the whole planet anyway why wait. Why did they even need an architect, why not keep track of where the ship was themselves. Like it only makes sense to split that information up as a safety measure so neither can betray the other so it should’ve been a ship for 2. Also the idea that we’re villainizing the cult run by a guy who learned the astronomer planned to abandon the entire planet to die without warning them is hilarious. Most logical character in the book honestly, learns the plan is to leave him and everyone he loves behind and says F that.

I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS!! Who planned this expedition?! How did someone plan to set up TWO colonies near black holes? Why did Vega have to wait for some kind of star sign if she knew what the black hole was already? Why didn't they just go and get people safe before things even got close to dire? How do they not know about tech and modern science if they've only been on the planet for 100 years? If the first astronomer came with the first colonists, why didn't they believe her about the dangers? What does the architect do (other than remind me of The Matrix) to have such a special title? I AM SO CONFUSED!! 😭😭😭

I liked this video. Lol idk why you thought it was so bad. Your recaps always have so much personality that it literally doesn't matter that I'm not reading these books. I wasn't into ACOTAR but watched all of your videos on it 😅.

I liked it. I got the book for Christmas. It was my first physical book for ages. Tried out a new idea for origami bookmarks on it. It has my favourite trope : outrunning a collapsing world. If I remember correctly the consumption was from a cloud of dark matter surrounding the black hole rather than the black hole itself.

so why exactly did the two stars on the horizon matter…….? the ship was there……the whole time……..

That sounds like someone who has not even the slightest idea how black holes work, they do not appear as shadows and the gravitation would be the thing everybody would notice. And that is not the only problem with astrophysics there, like the 100 years until certain stars return is complete nonsense.

You got me into Shea Ernshaw when you review Winterwood, which I loved. Wicked Deep was alright but History of Wild Places was just... so meh to me. I'm sad to hear about this book and I won't be picking it up, so I guess thank you for the spoilers? :) The twist is so bad, I literally started laughing out loud, jeez. I'm also a bit scared about her next book because I follow her on IG and it seems to me she's maybe rushing the next book too.

Omg YES! I even pre-orderd this book and the second it downloaded to my kindle I starten it and I was so disappointed☹️I love her other books and she had hyped it up so much on her Instagram saying things like this is the book I have wanted to write for so long and I love Vega and you are going to LOVE IT! No, it was just weird and confusing.

Thanks for another great video Cari. LOL listening to you explain the plot, and twist was wild. It sucks when there's such a potential for a book but is a letdown in the end.

hey i know sarah j maas has been kind of wacky with her other books but you should read her throne of glass series you can definitely tell it's one of her earlier works and the smut scenes are a little strange -- but there's considerably less of them in throne of glass and there is really a LOT of character development and relationship growth between the characters, especially in the third book (not including the prequel) onwards also i really want to see what you think of the series i got through it so fast i can't even tell you and your channel is so great i always binge it when i have a sick day so ❤

Despite what you said, this video was good! I agree with your friend, this twist sounds like it would have been good if it were only implemented better. So many things about the world building seem forced and unrealistic. Why was only one person allowed to be an astronomer per colony? why did they have to wait for the two special stars in order to leave the planted if the ship was already there and the first lady knew about the black hole?

Hey, great video! I am actually an astrophysicist so the black hole physics sounds absolutely insane 😅 i have SO many questions: - why is the black hole making them sick? It is an immense amount of gravity, it doesnt spread disease - how do the oceans evaporate off? That implies the atmosphere would have to be gone but they clearly are still talking and have air?? - if they were that close to a black hole, surely the oceans would be Wild, like constant sweeping tsunami wild - How is Vega able to escape the swell of the black hole and get to the other colony so quickly? There should have been a whole lot of funky time anomalies that close toa. black hole In summary, it sounds like this author watched interstellar, did not pay attention, and just cherry picked random parts of the story 🤦🏻♀️ My other gripe is that if you wanted to have a sickness caused by some astrophysical phenomena, the author should have gone with the star going giant esrlier than thought. The star would probably be habing crazy emission spikes and making people sick andas the star would swell, there would be some nasty weather on t pplanet which surely would have resulted in the same teist of them not being on earth?? But I guess you dont habe the get out of jail free card that 'going back in time' to get the love interest 🙄

I read this too and was struck by how emotionless it was, and the twist was super weird, really not helped by how long we were kept in the dark for! Plus I'm fairly sure black holes aren't visible. I feel like she took some tips from M Night Shyamalan.

if a black hole reaches the ocean and you're in it, like anywhere including the beach, nope, you can't run. it would've already sucked you in before she see that sight.
