Novgorod(exact name Great(Veliky) Novgorod), city in the North West Russia, not far from Saint Petersburg, is older then Yaroslavl. It was first capital of Russia and place of residence of first Russian Princes' dynasty. It was founded in 859. It's provincial capital now but there are some smaller cities in the same region older then it. For example. small city named Staraya(Old) Ladoga was founded in 759. Don't miss it with Nizhny Novgorod(Lower Novgorod) that is on Volga River. Yaroslavl is also very old and very historic city, but not oldest. Cities Derbent and Kerch cannot be considered as pure historical Russian cities, because originally there were not founed by Russan people and belonged to other countries like Turkey, Iran, etc. They were attached to Russian Empire only in 18 century

Yaroslavl was founded by Yaroslav the Wise, King of Kyiv (capital of Kievan Rus). He was Ukrainian. This demonstrates how mixed Russian and Ukrainian histories are. My greatest Russian friends live in this city.
@alexbibikov9393 ай бұрын
1) so called "Kievan Rus" is not state or country - it's name of certain period of Russian history - period when capital was in Russian city Kiev. Same as "Novgorod Rus" or "Vladimir Rus" - it's historical periods, not separate states. 2) Yaroslav the Wise was not Ukrainian, LOL. Ukraine as a separate state first time appears in 1991, as a "socialist republic" has been invented by bolsheviks in 1918. Before 1918 Ukraine ( aka okraina ) has been just geographical region, like "Florida panhandle" or "Appalachian heights". Likewise population there are not "Appalachians" or "Penhandlians" - no such ethnicity exist. Ukrainians is not ethnicity - it's political orientation. Anyone can become Ukrainian - just declare "Our father is Bandera, death to Moscovites" and he/she immediately become Ukrainian. 3) It' was not "mixed history" - it was ONE COUNTRY before bolsheviks divide it into many parts, one of this part called "Ukraine" now. All cities there has been founded and built by Russians ( unless there some city founded AFTER 1991 ; I doubt any such city existed though ).
@laurawelch71692 ай бұрын
@@alexbibikov939Ukrainian people have always been a distinct ethnic group. Before around 1870, we were called Ruthenians, according to census data of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Russian Empire, and Austro-Hungarian Empire. Yaroslav the Wise was Ruthenian, not Russian. Kieven Rus was known as a kingdom and political principality with monarchy and governors. Yaroslavl's daughter, Anna, married the King of France and founded the education system there.

@@laurawelch7169 >>> Kieven Rus was known as a kingdom and political principality with monarchy and governors. This is BS. You can never find wording "Kieven Rus" in any historical documents or maps. This wording appears in 19th century to describe historical period. >>> Yaroslav the Wise was Ruthenian, not Russian. BS detected. Yaroslav the Wise last name was Rurik. His ancestors are Ruriks from Novgorod - Rus capital _before_ Oleg captured Kiev and relocated throne there. Ethnically he most likely was Norse or Dane. Previous co-rulers of Kiev (dethroned and killed by Oleg) named "Oskold and Dir" most likely they'v been Norse too. >>> Rusins and Ruthenians are Russian tribes from western lands. There has been a lot of Russian tribes ( Pomory, Vyatichi, Krivichi etc etc ) that has been united to form one Russian nation. When western Russian lands become part of Austro-Hungarian empire Habsburgs was not happy that most people living there was not loyal. Has been done a lot of work to convert them to members of just invented new ethnicity "Ukrainians" with artificial language created from local dialect and forged with help of Hrushevsky, Those Russians who refused to convert into Ukrainians had been placed to death camps - google "Thalerhof internment camp".
