I built 3x eurorack cases - 2 which I built myself (bought power supplies, bus boards and wired it myself). I come from 5U modular, so I had experience. One thing I did NOT like was the BS "review" videos on YT which gave false impressions on certain modules. Second thing was the lack of competent construction of the modules by certain manufacturers which I did not encounter with 5U. Menu diving sequencers was a NO-GO. Life is too short. Bored Brain makes some nice stuff... I have 2 of their output modules (which are balanced out and double as a simple audio mixer). Hope you continue this series at some point.

I’m a bassist and have been a musician 40 years, so have experienced the progression of technology and how it affects the industry and popular culture. The upside of these changes is that now we have an almost unlimited amount of choices which were simply not available 40-50 years ago. The simple question to resolve is: what are you trying to achieve artistically? When you have that answer it’s easier to research and determine the gear you need. If your budget, space and time is limited, a unit like the H90 makes sense. If the opposite is true, a collection of individual pedals that are each supremely gifted in a single function may make more sense. To each his/her own …
@MrDschiesus2 ай бұрын
ive had the exact same experience. took me 6 months to find the patience to sit down. im still not sure about the pedal. yeah it has amazing capabilities but yeah... 70% i propably never use. also due to the fact that i only use it at home. as a perfomer those capabilities surely are amazing. but the main negative is tight to that: its just so overwhelming complexe, even if that comes a lot of the times from the fact that you can do all that stuff in different methods. but just the menu-diving aspect combined with button combos etc is just so off-putting for me. completely kills workflow, absolutely not intuitive. i hate programming music, i want to loose myselfn with eyes closed ;) it sounds great, yeah but... im not sure yet if i keep it.

After a year of consideration and leaning in the direction of other pedals I finally purchased the h90. I waited for a used deal but there are not many used units on the market. I now know why. This box delivers far beyond a buyers expectations. No matter how much homework you do it does not prepare you for what you get. I don’t play guitar. I’m using this for fx in my downtempo, melodic techno, organic/tribal house setup. To get to know this box I spent the day with it and just my octatrack mk2. I routed cue out as an alt out of the OT to the h90 and then back into OT. Essentially a send fx. In the OT I sample a dry loop from my main then run that layer through the h90. This allow me to introduce some wild fx even on drum and bass tracks without the mud. The end result is transformational. Now that I know what this thing can do I’m really excited to craft my own programs. That’s where your video comes in. Fantastic overview. Again, Eventide is missing out on a much wider audience by not communicating the H90s full capabilities in its marketing.

Can you hook up a midi controller to the app, so you can twist the buttons on something with real knobs, like a midi fighter twister (or whatever they're called)?
@Kompa55_Music3 ай бұрын
The app isn’t standalone so you need the H90 hardware connected to use it. And the H90 has loads of knobs already of course. If you want more, then you can connect a midi controller to the H90 and control almost anything with it.
@hillie473 ай бұрын
@@Kompa55_Music The app shows a pretty big grid of knobs, so if all those parameters can be controlled externally, that'd be easy. A midi fighter twister gives you 16 extra knobs, which can be quite useful if you're looking to adjust a lot of parameters on the fly. But nice to know it'll be possible to do.

not finished watching yet, but a couple of questions. (im choosing between this and a fractal FM3 for a dedicated FX unt for a specific synth). Q1. I understand if I sent a PC message from the synth the H90 will switch the the corresponding program within the current playlist. if I change playlist on the H90, the same PC message would select the corresponding program in that new list - correct? Q2. when i change programs with that PC message - is the effect ACTIVE/ON by default, Inactive/OFF by default, is that state whatever the pedal was in when it received the PC. I cant find any reference in the manual to this. Benefit of the FM is I use an Axe-FX so know exactly how it works - routing, editing, number of FX at once etc. the downside is if I want to access more than 128 patches, I have to send a bank change (which the synth in question doesnt/cant do) or apply a PC offset (128 for bank 2, 256 for bank 3 etc) which is fine, but does mean going into the settings exertime, or using the PC editor - its also £300 more than the H90. Changing lists on the H90 may be easier - but not if the unit defaults to bypassed every time..... Its kind of a critical point lol.
@Kompa55_Music3 ай бұрын
So I’ve never tried this as I don’t use PC messages in my set up but effects selected manually are ON by default and you can control the spillover from the previous effect so if you have a reverb then selecting a new effect, the reverb tail continues even when the new effect is selected. I’m afraid I can’t say more than that.
@ChristopherOrth2 ай бұрын
Did you know that in the Fractal units you can store up to 10 different "scenes" per patch? Each scene can swap out anything... fx blocks, cab sims, etc. If you plan it out, you can multiply that "patch" count by 10! So many ways to configure those boxes. As for the h90, you can download the PDF manual without buying one. It has a long section on control signals and mapping. That said, yes... there is only ever one "playlist", and PC messages are just selecting numbers, not "specific patches". And if I understand your next question correctly, you can send active on/off at any time. From the manual: An Active/Bypass mapping such as “P Act/Byp” will toggle between the active and bypassed state of the Program, this will be triggered by a MIDI CC value of 64 or greater. When using “P Act/Byp (M)”, the bypassed state will be triggered with a CC value less than 64, the active state will be triggered with a CC value of 64 or greater. Using “P Act/Byp (M)” can allow you to send a separate Bypass and Active MIDI message by simply programming one switch to send a CC value less than 64, and another switch to send a CC value of 64 or greater. Good luck!

I've found that, in general, the H90 app is much better for programming than programming through the hardware itself. The H90 is part of that trend. The H90, like most hardware, has to make compromises because of its size in that it assigns numerous features to relatively few buttons. An app doesn't have to do that, so everything becomes much more easily accessible. The H90 app is particularly good. The one piece of music hardware that I've found is the exception to this compromise is the Fender Tone Master Pro multi-effects unit. It's incredibly easy to use in the first place, and what makes it even easier is that the app almost completely mirrors the hardware. It's a very smart design. The Fender can do that because it's a large unit with a large and outstanding touchscreen. The H90 is compact and can't do things the same way. I'm curious to see, though, if Eventide and others go in the touchscreen direction in the future, as we're seeing more music hardware go to touchscreens and users are increasingly expecting it.
@Kompa55_Music3 ай бұрын
Yeah I agree. There is too much functionality to be used on such a small device. Not sure touchscreen is the way to go though. People want tactile knobs and buttons. Otherwise just stick an iPad with an app there instead.
@IgorHatesEverything3 ай бұрын
@@Kompa55_Music True, tactile knobs are very useful. With people of our age -- I'm 49 -- we still want tactile knobs and buttons. I'm wondering about younger generations, though, which have grown up on touchscreen-only devices and feel comfortable with them. Frankly, even I've gotten used to just relying on screens. When I'm programming my Fender or H90, I only use the app and don't touch the knobs at all. My guess is that companies like Eventide, Fractal and Helix will go to hybrid tactile/touchscreen in their next models like we see with Fender, Headrush and Quad Cortex. You never know about Boss, which always seems to be several years behind everyone else in terms of interface. I bought a Boss GM-800 several months ago, and although the sound quality is first rate, the interface on it is still from 30 years ago. And this is on the latest unit that Boss has just developed.

Do you know if I would be able to set hot switches (snapshots) to the 3 buttons on the external foot switch control, and still be able to access the snapshots without going into performance mode? I’d like to be able to stay in bank mode so I can easily switch to different programs or even programs on different banks relatively easily, while still accessing snapshots on the currently used program. While I know that I can assign the external controls to the snapshots, my question is, do I still have to be in performance mode for those switches to activate a snapshot? Or will they still activate the snapshot while in bank mode? I hope that question makes sense, and I appreciate any feedback you can give me. I would also be super interested in your take on efficient ways to utilize the external controls with a pedal and/or 3 button foot switch, or 2 pedals or two 3 button foot switches. And how these controls can be used in conjunction with midi, or in place of midi control, or leaning specifically into midi control and not using the external control options. I am interested in how these external controls can be used to unlock greater control over the unit. I have never really used midi before, so learning from experienced users is helpful. Thanks again. Cheers!
