Yes it was splendid. Of all the screen ups the doctor has made, this surely is one of his biggest. Starting with the silly Idea of testing Missy and ending with getting his companion killed and turned into a cyberman, being forced into a regeneration of himself, etc...
@Deathlygunn7 жыл бұрын
One thing worth noting, The Doctor Falls was originally the last episode for both Capaldi and Moffat, with the Doctor set to regenerate unconscious in the TARDIS after his battle with the Cybermen. However Chibnall refused to start his tenure with a Christmas Special, so Moffat was forced to do a last minute rewrite so both The Doctor and Bill were alive for Twice Upon a Time. It's a shame really as I think without having to use the last ten/fifteen minutes to set up how these characters survive and instead using them to flesh out the stakes and threat of the Cybermen, then this could have been an excellent send off for Moffat and Twelve.

I think you've completely missed the point of the scene where Twelve explains his reasoning to the Master and Missy. He understands how futile his efforts are but he can't bring himself to run away. Both of them listen to him, that's plainly obvious from their faces, the Master only says he doesn't because that's the kind of person he is. Missy is even crying, showing she does care. It's the turning point of the character, from then on she wants to help, she doesn't change her mind later on, she was deceiving Simm's incarnation. It's pretty obvious if you think about it.
@LadyDoomsinger4 жыл бұрын
I don't think she was outright deceiving him; rather she seemed conflicted and undecided, and at the last minute decides to go back to help The Doctor. Though that's just how it seemed to me. It was never explicitly stated one way or the other, so either interpretation is fine I guess.

@reagantao34367 жыл бұрын
Ok, I really enjoyed this...until 18:00 where I really think you either didn't understand the rationale of the Doctor Falls or just ignored it. The Doctor's speech was not "vague and amabiguous" it was blunt and assertive. He does what he does for the little people, whether it be saving the universe from a Dalek invasion or saving the lives of a few helpless villagers. It's an idealistic hopeless goal due to his circumstances, but he persists because it's the right thing to do. THAT is the point. The Masters didn't listen? Really? Were we watching the same episode because Simm's Master was looking down in barely suppressed emotion in one very pointed shot and Missy was fighting down tears the whole time. Two sides of the same coin, the Master is the callous world conquering asshole and Missy is the closest remnant of that old childhood friend who ran with the Doctor under the red skies of Gallifrey. The fact that she took the Doctor's hand yet rejects it for her own sake is a Classic Master move, one that prioritises self preservation over the hope that the Doctor would see things his/her way. Missy is the most amiable incarnation f the Master to date and half her plans involve converting the Doctor so considering that the original Delgado Master was set to sacrifice himself for the sake of the Doctor with almost no buildup, isn't it somewhat plausible that when faced with the possibility that the Doctor could be facing his final end, this incarnation would stand by him especially after he spent years trying to change her? The turning point comes at the scene when the Masters are escaping from the Cyberman where she sees an explosion, billowing the smoke she used to love seeing "pretty shapes" in and TURNS AWAY. Symbolically, this was executed flawlessly by Gomez as she betrays a distinct lack of interest in the chaos she once loved. No, Missy didn't turn good nor was the buildup in prior episodes well done, hence why I share your view that the beginning shoehorned it in. That doesn't change the fact that Missy stabbing the Master is one of the most pivotal moments in the Master's entire history as is Simm shooting her in the back. The worst and (relatively) best aspects of the Master exist in these two incarnations. Missy "miss[es]" being able to burn and hear the carnage she once wrought throughout the universe but kills her past self as a means of moving on and being at least partially the same person she once was. The answer to whether the Master could ever be good is not no, it is maybe. Missy still didn't care about the Mondasians (then again, neither did we) but she was moved by the Doctor's speech because of how utterly open it was and how it's possibly their most honest exchange since the days of Delgado. The development of Missy's arc was awful, but the denouement was flawless and their struggle, though merely the end point of a weak arc, was easily an amazing high. This all comes from someone who absolutely loathed the Doctor Falls so yeah, I think that most of your assertions are logical but your points regarding the Masters and the Doctor's speech in kindness almost seem liked they were written by a different person: someone who walked out of the room and founded these presumptions on a wikipedia summary.

I do however think you may have overlooked somethings in the second part. For example the whole point was the Doctor couldn't save the day, all he could do was stop the Cybermen on the floor he was on, the others would have to prepare for them and take it from there, I just think you made a point about how this doesn't solve the problem, well yeh, that's the point of the story. Isn't it just nice to have a situation where we can't actually win? No Rose's coming to save the day, no Doctor Donna nothing, gives weight to the story and threat knowing not even the Doctor can hold it back permanently.

Good points, almost 100% agreement. Have to point out though that: 1. The Doctor explained why taking a last stand was the only real option: Because of the time dilation, trying to flee upwards would just give the Cybermen more time to evolve and they would be overrun before they could get there. 2. Actually, Missy *did* listen to the Doctor. The answer to "can she turn good?" was *yes* - she just got shot in the back before she could act on it.

@TheSleepiestPlurals6 жыл бұрын
nah. I watched these episodes like last night, and I hadn't followed any of the social media stuff, so I was genuinely surprised by those twists. I came to the slow realization that these were actually cybermen, and the moment the surgeon guy says "oh the pain? We have something for that now," and takes out the cyberman headpiece I was like OH MY GOD I WAS RIGHT HOLY SHIT and that was really exciting, just all the hints slowly clicking together. I also had no idea the guy that played The Master was coming back, and I didn't see it coming at all. I was fucking dumbfounded when I saw him. So, as far as those twists go, they work really well if it wasn't for everything having been teased and revealed so prominently before. I also like the stuff with Missy. I don't know why you don't understand her transformation. She clearly listened to the Doctor's little speech and was affected by it, just look at her reaction! She had been at a crisis of character the entire episode, there was some clear inner turmoil going on. As to her not seeing the betrayal coming... they say this every fucking time there's a crossover like this. When a timelord is sharing a timeline with an earlier regeneration, their memories get fucked up, Missy herself said that pretty sure. She just remembered bits and pieces of what happened. She didn't remember having been on the ship at all until The Master told her. The only thing I didn't like about these episodes is how they showed all the different evolutions of cybermen. That really took me out of it. Cause like, if this is supposed to be the "genesis" of the cybermen, that is, where they were first invented, then they would have gone into the universe after this whole thing was over, so it means they would have already made all the advances we see with their gradual change in appearance throughout the series. Why would they have looked like basically their prototype model when the doctor first encountered them? That's like sending a WWI tank to deal with a modern war, it just doesn't make sense.

As someone who studied Physics in university, when I realized that the episode uses time dilation as a plot device made me go YES. It's rare in science fiction for some reason.

Nice review of part one. I blocked myaelf from any spoiler intormation prior to watching, so i did get the full impact of the reveal of the mondasian cybermen, the master, etc. The reveal of Bill as a cyberman and her voice, which was an excellent replication of the voice of the first mondasian cybermen, really gave me the chills. The tear was also brilliantly done, as remark to future generations of the cybermen who have a tear engraved in their eyes...

idk about u guys, but for me this is one of the best season finale in new who (of corse, season 4 finale is the first one for me). i think is just beautiful. Yeah, it has some important errors, but the doctor falls is just amazing and beautiful. The kindness speech, missy finally choosing to stand with the doctor but ended up killed... i just like to think the betrayal and the hoplessness of the situation and the doctor. He is defeated in this episode. i think this could be the end of doctor who, the doctor dying but still strong to his morals and beliefs, with his final act being a kind and noble one, at least trying to protect the people of the ship. But at the same time, a sad ending for him. Betrayed, defeated and alone (if bill wasn't there)

To be fair, I didn't know that either the Mondassian Cybermen were coming nor that John Simm was returning, so I didn't notice either of them until their respective reveals. That's not really a fault of anyone working on the show except the marketing department

stopped watching Dr who mid way through Mat Smith's 2nd season, and only recently started looking into it again, and my god I completely loved this season especially after hearing all about how utterly terrible the writing and episodes are for seasons 11 and 12, I was delighted by every single episode, even the ones that weren't the best, were still very enjoyable Before watching season 10, all I thought about Bill was the whole "it speaks emoji" and I didn't think I'd like her character... But my god I was so wrong, she really is brilliant idk, personally I really enjoyed the final two episodes and even though there were slight issues or things I picked up here and there, I gotta say I disagree heavily with the 4/10 for the last episode, but still respect your opinion

Similar story. I tried watching Capaldi's first season and couldn't stand Clara's constant whining. I vaguely hear about a new companion later but wasn't interested. Then years later I come back to see it was actually pretty good.

I found this season pretty solid through out. The monk storyline fizzled out faster than a sparkler underwater but the rest were above average to amazing. I’m going into season 11 with a healthy bout of skepticism but I’m still gonna tune in to see how our new show runner is gonna handle it.

17:47 If you had been paying attention, you’d know that those kids were the descendants of the original crew mates of that one blue guy from the previous episode. The Blue guy mentioned his crew mates went to the bottom of the ship and then the top of the ship which was near the black hole began seeing a ton of life popping up in the bottom of the ship. Because of the immense time dilation, the other crew members were down there so long eventually they began breeding with each other. Which caused all those life signs to pop up.

I love your reviews and content, but I think that you totally missed the point with the Doctor Falls and that it is quite possibly one of the best episodes since Tenant. The point is that the doctor is coming to the end of his life and that the stakes are therefore small. It's a last stand, and he acknowledges it's futile but it doesn't matter to the doctor how many people there are to save, they're always worth saving.

I remember watching this episode and missing the bit right at the end, coming back to see the very end with no audio. I then rushed to my computer to re-watch it online, first to check if there was supposed to be audio, then to catch up on what I missed. I originally thought there was not meant to be audio to add an air of mystery for the Christmas episode to resolve, but after the silence kept going I realised something must have been wrong. Then suddenly I believe for the end credits the audio returned and thereafter seemed fine, further confusing me. T'was rather annoying.

Season 10 just sucked. The whole water girl thing just was too over powered. They completely forgot the master effectively redeemed himself and sort of achieved sanity when last we saw him. He, after all, SAVED the doctor at that point. I'm tempted to just pretend the series ended with River's Husbands and be done with it.
@iHuzza6 жыл бұрын
The Master didn't redeem himself - he attacked Rassilon because he wanted revenge, and this also happened to save the universe at the same time. He also wasn't sane, he fell out of the fucking sky as a skeleton whilst screaming "DINNER TIME!!" earlier that story, the dude was completely nuts, even more so than in any other story.

The only problem with the finale is the Parallel Universe Cybermen’s actors.. I did not like. The main problem with it for me was how they did there arms. It is sort of accurate but if they were going for accuracy of those type of cybermen they would need to place their arms down lower. I know it’s nitpicking but I just have too much nostalgia for the first time we saw the Cybermen in the revival, which was the first time I saw Doctor Who

So, according to Moffat's dialogue for 11's last episode, 12 has used up three of his regens, so technically 13 is actually the 17th Doctor (11 being actually 13, 12 being actually 14, etc) and we only have 10 doctors left. I think.
@edadankmemes2 жыл бұрын
what the hell are you talking about??
@berserkasaurusrex42332 жыл бұрын
@@edadankmemes I don't know, that was three years ago. Clearly I was trying to make sense of the show's convoluted regeneration canon; the 10th-but-actually-11th-and-12th Doctor using up multiple regens, a forgotten 9th Doctor between 8 and 9-but-actually-10, and a whole new set of regenerations granted to 11-but-really-13-kinda (who actually got another regeneration in the H1tl3r episode but the writers forgot about that). I can only assume the canon has gotten infinitely more complicated since then. How many incarnations has the Doctor had as of right now?
@RetroRobotRadio4 жыл бұрын
Actually the doctor and company at the top of the ship near the black hole were effected by the time dialation. The closer you are to the black hole the more you slow down. The bottom of the ship, moving fast, was at normal speed.

You can explain every character throughout moffats entire tenure the way you have explained the ones in this episode, cause he didn't have a clue how to write characters. Sure pearl makie was great but the actual character of Bill wtf was that supposed to be. The first part was amazing and looked to be shaping up to be a good story and tbh i feel like an idiot for falling for that shit again all moffat ever done was big build ups for disappointing pay offs he was just a bad writer.

@ElManReborn6165 жыл бұрын
I deeply enjoyed the second part, there were payoffs from as back as series 8 and it was so poetic. For instance, the theme of the season is no reward, no witness, no hope. This bit is really unclear, unless you think about it: -no reward is the doctor being unable to save all the people all the time and struggling to do the right thing, even if pointless; -no witnesses is Missy, redeeming herself, but to her own standards and unseen by anyone; -no hope (the big one) is Bill. The Doctor tells her "until there's tear (emotions) there's hope" (reference to the third doctor's "a tear, sarah jane? Don't you know until there's life there's...", btw), but when he falls, she is hopeless. Pay attention to the shot: she doesn't cry in either form, because she's almost gone. But without emotions, she still has love because, call back to s8 "love is not an emotion, love is a promise" and Heather comes to get her. Now, I see how she can be forgotten, but this is actually reinforced by their flashback that says "promise you won't leave?" "I promise" and one of them being a cyberman, definitely connects to Danny Pink

Then Part Two came along and pissed everything away. They brought Bill back through, basically, fairy magic. The Masters are pretty easily dispatched and basically, everything set up in the first part is not paid off well in the second, all in the name of a happy ending.

How did the doctor hold back regeneration for over 2 weeks (and now for the entire Christmas special) and after he ‘died’ he immediately began regeneration why? Shouldn’t he be all healed up or was the thing with bill just like a little spark of life enough to wake him up and begin regeneration but not enough to save him
@Deathlygunn7 жыл бұрын
Here's the way I see it, when The Doctor is electrocuted at the beginning of the episode, he's only wounded, so he's able to suppress the regeneration easily enough, but by the end of The Doctor Falls he's been shot several times and caught in an explosion, this causes a full regeneration, waking The Doctor from his "death" but he makes the decision not to change.
