I thought this at first too. We don't even get a guaranteed first rounder for an all star winger. But, Guentzel is a pure rental player whose contract ends after this season. He was also recently injured. Therefore, the Pens can't just get the top players from Carolina because to Carolina, they aren't worth it for a guy who might play 20 games for them this season. I looked up the prospects too and they're actually decent prospects, with one of them getting some NHL time this season with Carolina (albeit only 2 games). Dubas did what he could. It was either this or the Pens give up Guentzel to unrestricted free agency for nothing. This trade is better than nothing.

Ponomarev and Koivunen are both better than a first rounder would be expected to turn out. This trade is literally better than getting two first round picks, just for them. Bunting also isn't that big of a downgrade. The return for the pens is quite good compared to the zero they'd get when he just signs for a contender over the summer. This trade is a win-win, worst case scenario it's even.

And getting two prospects (Pony and Koivunen) who are each better than the expected value of a canes first round pick for a rental when you are out of the playoffs? Rewrite the trade to account for how good the prospects are and it's this: Bunting for two and a half years (50 point player at 4.5mil), two unconditional first round picks, a conditional first round pick, and an unknown quantity in Cruz Lucius. Pens fan here. I think draft picks are relatively worthless outside maybe the top 3 in most cases, so I'm glad we didn't go all ga-ga for some playoff team's late first rounder. I'm actually happy we got a bona fide NHLer, 3 decent prospects, and a couple of lottery tickets for a guy who we could've potentially lost for nothing anyway. AND, though I don't have optimism about it or anything, it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that we could go and make an offer to Jake in the offseason and re-sign him. If that were to happen, then I'd say we come out WAY on top on that deal. This is a business, and we can't keep everyone. I'm genuinely shocked the Pens didn't move more people. I thought for sure there would be teams wanting a few of our other guys. Especially Eller, who has been rock solid all season and is playing his best offensive hockey the last few weeks. He's a proven playoff competitor and a solid depth piece. You're telling me every single playoff team looked at Eller and said "Nah, center depth isn't that important"? Also surprised someone didn't make a run for either Rakell or Smith. Both have had down years, but Rakell is playing way better lately, and Smith has Cup experience. Also a little surprised we didn't have takers for Acciari (cheap depth C with some grit should make any playoff team better) or Ned (this year his play has been at a level that would slot him in as a 1B goalie on most teams... goalie depth has proven vital in cup runs for the last decade or more, and I'd probably say Ned is at least as good if not better than a couple starters heading to the playoffs this year). Alas, it is what it is. We're probably entering some dark days in Pittsburgh unless miracles start falling out of trees.

Bunting is two thirds of Guentzel's production with half the cap hit plus Dubas could've got a 1st but he isn't bothered, he prioritized younger players that will be ready sooner & the difference between a low 1st & that 2nd is only about 20 spots Bunting will be flipped in a year for other good assets as well & Koivunen is a beast
@chrisg77316 ай бұрын
If the goal is for the Pens to push for a cup in the near future, trading Sid as a rental next year for picks and prospects and having some prospects ready to go is the play. Sid re-signs with the Pens for 25-26 and a few years beyond, and you hope the prospects are ready to go sooner than later and the Pens core they made such a fuss about keeping together has enough in the tank to make one more run. But you're right. Prospects are probably more valuable than picks at this point. Picks may very well not be ready for one last cup push.

Just look at the Tyler Toffoli trade for example. Guentzel's agent did not allow teams to talk with him about any extensions in advance, so his value was capped at a rental to begin with. Overall I think Dubas has done an alright job with the hand he was dealt. TBF, PIT missed the playoffs by one damn point last year and the year before, they were on their way to get rid of NYR but you can only get so lucky with a third goalie (Domingue) with Jarry injured and DeSmith injuring himself a minute into the first game or so. They can still make the playoffs, don't think they will, but I've seen crazier things happen with much weaker teams than the Pens. Losing Rust and Guentzel to injury was at the worst time possible, they were having a great bump up that got em close to NYI, Caps and Jersey, I'd expect em to finish in front of 2 of those teams, Caps gave away talent (Mantha) for picks and change. So far this season has been much less heartbreaking than last year when winning their 82nd game assured playoffs, they lead the game but ended up losing, I don't think I'll ever feel that angry about one single regular season game ever.

Not to mention his defensive play has also improved, he has gained size and strength, and his shooting has significantly improved since last year. Would I say that he was the best prospect of Canes? Absolutely not. Top 5? Definitely. In Penguins' system he absolutely is the top 3 prospect, which doesn't say much since their prospect pool is sub-par at best. For all the haters... I think this is a fantastic deal for the Pens. They wanted prospects who would be closer to ready than draft picks. With their aging forwards and lack of scoring depth, they are clearly focused on getting younger forwards. By most accounts, Morrow IS the Canes' best prospect, but he is also a defenseman. In fact, by some agencies, 4 of the Canes' top 10 prospects are D-men and 1 is a goalie. Dubas got 3 of the 5 prospects left on that list. If 2 of them play any time in the NHL it's a huge win. If 1 hits and becomes a regular top 6, it's a total steal. Bunting should be a serviceable middle 6 guy and has a reasonable cap hit for 2 more seasons so that is just a bonus. All of that for giving up 20 games with Guentzel. 20 games that were going to mean absolutely nothing to the franchise. I'm not sure what else you could reasonably expect.

Tons of energy and grit. 63 and 49 points in his two years. with the Buds. He's no 3rd or 4th line depth forward throw in.

Dubas is not a good GM, he proved that in Toronto. And don't anyone try to act like the current Leafs players have anything to do with Dubas. Anyone would have picked those players in that positions. He did nothing but surround them with soft small players.
@bstar7777776 ай бұрын
The hype for moving Guentz was absurd, so there was no way Dubas would ever meet those expectations. I don't love the return, but it's something. I would have personally gone more for quality over quantity, even if that mean sweetening the pot to get a blue chip prospect and a guaranteed first- maybe by adding Pettersson in a 3 team trade.
@Hi_Scoops6 ай бұрын
Sorry Pens fans. Dubas is going to set the Penquins back at least 5 years. You know any ‘next Crosby’ 12 year olds to save the franchise once they hit rock bottom?

I don’t understand why leafs fans think dubas is a great GM He built a failure in Toronto (1 playoff round win?!) and is doing the same in Pittsburgh

In short, yes he could’ve arguably gotten more value the thing I really don’t like is the condition of the 1st.
@brandonhall99596 ай бұрын
I dont mind the trade to be fair, kyle used to draft and sign plenty of players that he could grow the value of. Honestly he remind me of a stock trader. Always trying for the galaxy brain move, which he pulled some good "under the radar" signings and draft picks with his tenure. Idk time will tell on this one.

It’s kinda funny looking at the parallels between the Red Sox and Penguins. Getting rid of talent, getting bad returns etc. Same owner go figure.
@YT00916 ай бұрын
It wasn't a fleece. They took the best offer that was on the table. Jake is a rental that they weren't going to be able to re-sign in the off season. They got some decent players in return, that's all Pens fans can ask for at this point. This is a sign, the rebuild is starting. The core 3 of Crosby, Malkin, and Letang will stay with the team until retirement. Everyone else is subject to movement.
@KEVMAN79876 ай бұрын
Considering Guentzel is just coming off of injury and is a rental with zero term on his contract left, his value wasn't as big as it could have been.

Dubas has been an unmitigated disaster. Every move he has made from the guys he has resigned, to the free agent signings, to the trades, has absolutely blown up in his face. It's almost as if he is singlehandedly trying to ruin the Pittsburgh Penguins or at least set them back to flounder for about the next decade or so. Sad as a Pens fan to see this old dumpster fire of a team get skated off the ice every night.
@dougiep27696 ай бұрын
Dubas messed up signing the four to that much dough that have underperformed every single year in the playoffs and will continue to. Toronto needs to trade some big names if it ever wants a chance to succeed

Dubas was never a good GM. He got bailed out by "high end" talent that couldn't perform when it mattered. He fucked the leafs because his inability to assess talent and build a good roster has always been on display

Worst GM in the league by a mile. This guy is a corporate hack who thinks fantasy sports is how to win.

Dubas proved in his public meltdown last year that he's unstable and unfit to manage a hockey team. Imagine this guy doing the key negotiations and trying to push his weight around to work deals when he cries about family in the public eye and whines about himself when it's supposed to be about the players and team, not him. This team is doomed.
