It is disappointing that there is a knee jerk reaction here to hammer Kwesi over every decision that even lightly smells of failure, while his shining wins don’t get credit. Kwesi gets no credit for creating the organization that the entire league thinks is the best landing spot for a rookie QB (all about McConnell). Why are the Vikes the #1 NFLPA destination? Who is executing the UDFA strategy to our benefit? He hired a DC that we all credit with turning around the D, but somehow Kwesi gets no love for it. He navigated the Kirk situation perfectly. This is a strong organization that is making really good strategic decisions. First draft seems to suck but the big things go very well. I am not related to Kwesi….but a big fan of how he leads. Keep it up!

Given the fact that it's been reported that the Vikings internally believe they will get two comp picks, I think we can assume that they have a different formula for comp pick compensation than OTC. @@BeoTheMage that was 40 years ago. Drafting was a total guessing game back then. Now anybody can watch every single snap a player takes their entire high school and college career before being drafted. McCarthy likely fell because he lacks elite traits. He doesn't have Caleb Williams arm talent, Jayden Daniels athleticism, Drake Maye's big arm and prototypical build or Penix's arm and quick release. McCarthy has a good chance to put up some numbers with his supporting cast in Minnesota, but even they were desperately trying to trade up to #3 overall to draft Maye for a reason. It’s about screwing it up and how he should have had a better plan with free agency. Not worth screaming about, but he’s still messing it up too much. He doesn’t seem to have a complete grip on what his job is. The reason it hurts more that they lost the other comp pick is they already traded away 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round picks away. Agree with Mackey on his take on draft asset management. Why did they hang onto Hunter? They weren’t going anywhere last year and clearly weren’t going to resign him. Decent chance he gets a first in a trade if Sweat and Leonard Williams got their teams a 2nd. Then they wouldn’t have needed to trade with Houston and had their 2024 & 2025 2nd rounders. And don’t get me started with that freaking Detroit trade dropping 20?slots for peanuts.

It all looks disjointed to me. Everything Kwesi has done in these drafts seems either reactionary, forced, or poor decision making, unlike other high functioning front offices (eagles/chiefs/ravens) who you rarely see make lopsided deals not in their favor. And I don't care about what trade chart is used... Trades compensation should be similar to the rest of the league deals. Every single trade he's overpaid to trade up, and gotten underpaid in almost every trade down.... Like he doesn't have a good plan, and/or is forcing what he wants to happen instead of letting the board fall to him. Maybe I'm wrong, but that is my impression to date. Even the JJ McCarthy trade up seemed reactionary. I don't think anyone was interested in pick #10 but us. And the early off season trade with Houston seems like a panic move to me. To trade so early, with no subsequent trade up in place, and then to try and save face with another massive overpay to get Turner.... Granted, it could work, but that doesn't necessarily justify the poor process. Its been nothing BUT overpaying IMO. Also, the blown comp pick is mind numbing to me. I don't care how many assets we can recoup other ways....that doesn't justify blowing what could be a valuable pick/asset. I expect my front office to be competent, they should NEVER foolishly squander ANY assets big or small. They're supposed to be very smart and on top of these kind of minute details. Right?

So, I think the real question is: do the teams have in their possession the EXACT formula used to calculate comp picks? I know we certainly don't have access to it (and I would guess NEITHER does OTC) since every year it's just a guessing game. If Kwesi had the EXACT chart, then it's a screw up. But, even then, it isn't exactly the end of the world. The Hunter snafu, losing this comp pick, the 20 spot drop in the first rd. with the Lions w/o proper compensation, are ALL problems. Right now, Kwesi is still kind of learning and is still getting a bit of a hall pass from me -- but it won't last forever. IF these mistakes continue then he's going to have to answer for these decisions. Trading Hunter was a no-brainer and he failed. That's not a good look.

A comp 3rd falls at what is basically the start of the 4th round. Given that a pick a year out is usually considered to be discounted by time, the whole argument is about what is essentially an early 5th round pick next year. I don't think the organization really cares about it tbh.

The problem with our general manager is one we may need to get all new scouts, but the main problem is not necessarily trading up or down, it’s the compensation of the first year. He should’ve came out with Detroit first round pick next year or at least kept their second round pick instead of switching positions. Whenever you trade with somebody in the division, you have to win even over the trading chart, he did that with Detroit and Green Bay and he lost both times so I think he said the president with the other GM that he could be lowballed. It hurts when you’re not a football guy and analytics don’t always work.

I disagree the phrasing "he has been loose with draft capital". The man has NEVER won a trade. That being said, I like THIS draft. None of his previous two. He was aggressive and got what we think are great players.

I don't really care about the picks situation. If Kwesi actually cared about them they would of made trades before the deadline last year when kirk went down. The Vikings could've moved a ton of players that left this year and they didn't. None of it was hindsight either with kirk and JJ down the season was a wash. The team can always get some more picks. People are crying over nothing. What babies do.

This is how I defend Kwesi. Go back and look at that 21’ draft , Spielman’s last draft 🤮. What did Rick have? 12-15 picks and how many are left 2 or 3 guys. I think it’s possible Rick got fired for that draft.

Drafting better than Spielman doesn’t make Kwesi a good GM. Compare him to his contemporaries. I’d argue that just in the NFC North, the other 3 GM’s have significantly outperformed Kwesi. We can’t count this most recent draft. No one knows how it will play out. Maybe 2024 will save him. TBD.

@@panthony1969 I never said it did but the very last draft of Spielman was awful exceptions were Darrisaw and Bynum. Spielman had 10-15 years on the job and Kwesi 3 years. In my humble opinion I think this draft was a good one and also he’s learning and doing what’s necessary to get us the guys we needed. I’m really convinced that the Hunter debacle was not altogether Kwesi’s fault. I’ve seen The Wilf’s in action and when they like someone like Cousins they’ll keep them here in my view to the detriment of the team. Kwesi because of his background probably listened to consensus on Hunter and it was bad judgement on the team as a whole not to pack it in after they lost Cousins. So they went out got Dobbs and tried to bring back to life this deadcat bounce situation. DFFS aka du** f***in fans were crying pleaseeee don’t pack it in. Idjits because that’s what in my view led to keeping and losing Hunter. Unfortunately we got fans that only react out of emotion and narrative. We can’t hold him completely responsible because in a way the DFFS, The Wilf’s and The Organization got caught up in emotion. He gets a pass! Kwesi’s probably never dealt with such fanaticism before so he’ll make the necessary adjustments. Allowing Kirk Cousins to walk was not only in my view the right thing to do but Kwesi was fair and upfront with him saying they were going to draft his replacement. Kirk got pissed got the guaranteed money from Atlanta. What did Atlanta do they drafted his replacement before Kirk played a down. No matter what we think of Kwesi he treated Kirk like a man and told him the truth.

2022 Draft: 8/10 players selected are still on the team. Two starters (Evans, Ingram). Three regular contributors (Chandler, Booth, Muse). One traded for a 6-rounder (Lowe). Only one cut (Otomewo). And the defensive players were drafted for a differnt scheme. 2022 was NOT a disaster.

How do you say your franchise is not rushing JJ to the field, yet you need Griffin for 1 year over a future 3rd? We could have signed Griffin next Thursday or what other random date and kept that pick after the draft. Just a stupid move for a guy that needs to rebuild a team.

Guys the biggest gaffe I can think of in player acquisition is cutting Gilbert Brown a 3rd round pick nothing since then has been bad bad. Hershey Walker Bad bad. Not even remotely bad bad. Questionable maybe but look at who's on the roster and who's not! No kirk, kendricks, Thielan etc we got Addison Turner JJ JJ Harry, Bynum and 2 stud OT. I think we're doing fine

What do YOU think, Phil ? If we lost a 3rd round comp pick in next year's draft due to an admin/calendaring error that high dollar folk (paid millions) should catch, how is that NOT a problem ? It may be in the weeds, but it's what they do; some of us lose our jobs for this kind of oversight; maybe I'm not thinking in the right context. Though KAM seems to be getting better with each draft, these little personnel faux paus smack of "Vikings," and what is typical in preventing a good team from becoming great. It does appear we are heading in a net positive direction; but only 2/32 get to the dance, and will this regime be good enough to ascend to 1/16 in the NFC. I agree that "Before I Die," in the present day, even though I've experienced the Twins in '87 & '91, kind of extends to all of MN sports - especially since the Vikes, Wolves, and Wild (and even now the Twins) haven't been close for a very, very long time.

George Allen's tactic was to trade draft picks and enjoy the benefits of having a veteran roster. This approach meant that he didn't need the ability to discern which college players were worth giving an opportunity to and his time could be spent learning about players on the teams his Redskins faced or might face in the postseason. Your miss-rate should be lower with men who are already professionals.

I like the selections this year. However, KAM has consistently given away value. His first trade was egregious as he left at least a 2nd round pick on the table in the terrible trade down 20 spots in the first. He lost a 4th or so in the Dallas Turner trade. He lost a 3rd round comp pick rather than simply waiting to sign a depth CB to compete for a spot. Neither of the last two are horrible in isolation. But, when combined with each other, and the terrible trade in his first draft, it creates a concerning pattern. I like Kwesi's demeanor and approach, but he needs to either invest time and energy into figuring this out or hire someone to help with conserving draft capital.

16:14 If we traded Danielle Hunter for a 2nd, we’d lose on the comp 3rd, where Griffin’s contract would’ve replaced Kirk’s 3rd round comp pick. Yes it’s more value but would you pick swap to lose a player mid season? The compensation essentially would’ve been a 2025 3rd (Kirk’s) comp + Danielle Hunter for a 2024 2nd. Or are you fine with it being Danielle Hunter for a 2025 3rd round (Kirk’s) comp?

While it may not be 100% true Kwesi has said in the past that they do not think about future comp picks when building a team now. That being said the year they signed Kirk they lost Bridgewater, Bradford and Keenum. We were projected to get a couple of 3rd rounders with other losses but wound up with zero in the third since all three crapped the bed with their new team. So play performance under new contract plays a roll in this formula as well. So we really need the free agents we lost to play lights out with new team to give us the best shot at comp picks in any round.

We need to stop with the easy fall back on Kwesi isn't a football guy. He's worked in football for over a decade. He met and was recruited by the 49ers VP of football operations and cap/contact manager Paraag Marathe back when Harbaugh was their coach and started in 2013. He was the VP of football operations in Cleveland for 2 years. Dex almost nailed it, part of his strength is team and organization building is listening to and balancing interests and wants of folks in the organization. I wanted picks for Cousins and Hunter too. But he has to balance that against the wants of his coach and supporting his coaches ability to coach the team. If he trades those guys and a handful of others on the team are upset and decide they are leaving in free agency, or not signing extensions or holding out for larger ones with more guarantees, or simply lose faith in the org and coach after the coach said he would do his best to enable them to compete to win games, how many draft picks are all those things worth? You blame Kwesi too often for being just a numbers guy but it's actually his actions that show an avoidance of being strictly numbers and giving real weight to these very much football and human elements that you're taking issue with.

Are you upset with how the team is now??? I'm sure they said let's get our blue chip players we have a ton of cap room next year and next draft class (as of to date) is not good we have 100% improved all positions (maybe not DT) and OLine but they were not dire needs such as QB and CB and Edge so I'm on board... I'm glad he doesn't follow the crowd and that he takes chances at time and other times he tries to build draft capital. He is learning and every year I think he gets better

To me, this was probably a mistake, but by itself not lethal. That said, it is part of a worrisome trend. Kwesi just doesn't seem very good at the wheeling and dealing aspect of the draft. And given how many holes remain on the roster, it seems like he was far too willing to give up multiple picks, including future picks. I understand Dallas Turner was one of the premier prospects this year, but I am far less convinced than Judd that it will be easy to pick up multiple picks in next year's draft. I say this as someone who doesn't really like the Vikings, but since I live here, it would be more interesting if they had a chance in the playoffs.
