sanjana's father clearly 1) loves her and 2) knows that loving her is the most important thing. he definitely was processing a lot (he's tipsy, on camera, finding out surprising things about his daughter who he didn't think was dating at all) but he controlled his reaction and showed that he prioritized her happiness. these moments are rarely going to be picture perfect and it's unfair to judge him on assumptions instead of on his actions and how his daughter speaks of him.

The first video gave me the courage to come out to my mom and I’m soooo grateful for it!! I watched the original video and just cried, feeling I cannot be in the closet anymore. I was feeling so many emotions watching their parents reactions and thinking how mine would react. So a week later I decided to come out to my mom (we were going on a trip to Barcelona and I wanted to go to pride there, so this was another huge motivator haha). It went good in a sense she was neutral about it, not angry but not stoked either. Now, over a half a year later she has had time to get used to the idea of me being a lesbian and she feels more comfortable to talk about lgbt+ topics when I bring it up. There’s a long path to go but I’m feeling hopeful and free

Especially Sanjana’s very real interaction with her dad helped me the most I think. The fear was very tangible and I could relate a lot to that. Sanjana's dad reminds me a lot of my own dad. I never "came out", but when I entered my first relationship and the person was a girl (presenting as one at the time, he has since then come out as trans) my dad had two reactions: first, he asked me kind of aggressively if it was real, I said yeah, he nodded and walked off. then, later on he came into my room, sat on my bed and said he still loved me and that I would always be his kid no matter what. Like he sort of needed confirmation, then time to process, then accept. I know when my sister came out as bi years before that, he struggled to accept it as well, and he has always made fun of my brother's feminine sides (not with malicious intent, but still). Point is, I think my dad had a certain mindset before having kids, and then has worked to shed himself of those thoughts and beliefs, because ultimately he loves us unconditionally. A few years after my first (and last lol) "girlfriend", I told him I was going to transition and change my name. His first reaction was "not surname, right?". Dude wasn't concerned about my gender at all, just wanted to know I'd still share his family name. I think Sanjana's dad is on that path of shedding a certain mindset and putting his daughter first. It really hit home, and it was great seeing all the different dynamics between the kids and their parent/parental figure.
