Today’s feature is a record label that is one of the most influential in urban entertainment history. There’s no questioning No Limit’s greatness throughout the 90s and their peak and dominance specifically toward the end of the decade. In 1998 alone No Limit released a total of 23 albums, 6 went platinum and 5 gold, selling a total of 15 million copies, making an astounding 160 million by years end. Label founder Master P’s strategy of flooding the market was in peak form to say the least that year, and the demand for the pen & pixel artwork, cleaned up street gangster lyrics and beats by the pound created it’s own chapter as many say in hip hop for No Limit Records. It’s impressive the feats Master P has been able to reach and the accomplishments of his artist, especially when they didn’t have a blueprint for the strategy the label chose. With the business mind of Mater P, I’m surprised No Limit didn’t find a way to dominate in the 2000s the same, or no longer have a presence in hip hop. What happened? How’d this great strategy/label fall? Did No Limit Records Peak Too Soon? What Happened? Stunted Growth Music

They literally only had a 2 year run 97 and 98 them reaching they full potential I disagree because all P had to do was leave the label in control of beats by the pound if he wanted to focus on playing basketball, P thinking all for himself and being stubborn and not being open to renegotiate a better deal with beats by the pound and instead severing ties all because he ain’t like the offer they had most definitely stunted they growth. No Limit should have had a run just as long as Cash Money records did.

I think Beats By The Pound leaving the label was the biggest blow and the most stunted of the growth. The other stuff was inevitable, but when they left, it not only completely changed the sound, but it cut a few years of their dominance. It was at a time when rap labels like them all had a producer or a production team crafting their sound. Cash Money had Mannie Fresh. Ruff Ryders had Swizz Beatz. Bad Boy had The Hitmen. So So Def had Jermaine Dupri. Master P was so “quantity over quality”, that he didn’t understand that Beats By The Pound was the biggest part of the quality. They knew how to make Silkk sound good. When you find producers like that, they aren’t not so replaceable.

When Beats By The Pound left in mid 1999, Mr Serv-On, Fiend, Mia-X, Prime Suspects, Gambino Family, Steady Mobb'n, Ghetto Commission, Full Blooded, Mean Green, Lil Italy, Mr Marcelo, all left. Kane & Abel, Mac, C-Murder, gets locked up, Mystikal had success after No limit but he gets locked up as well, Silkk The Shocker left after his 5th album, Choppa, D.I.G, Ms Peaches and Krazy (who sounded way too much like 2Pac) tried to fill in that void but it didn't work, Snoop Dogg left and became a hip hop Icon one of the greatest west coast rappers of all time, Lil Romeo was never a good rapper. I always give full credit to P and No Limit for revitalizing the streets after Pac and Biggie left. Although I wasn't a big fan or follower (yes, I do have some NL joints in my collection), I really respected how they built their success from the ground up and by the solid support of the hood. That is HIP-HOP. On another note, what slowed them down was the breakout/through of CMR. After Juvie blew up with 'HA' and later 'BACK THAT...' People were ready to move on from The Tank. However, NL's crazy run should never be understated. They earned their place for real. Respect from St. Louis!!

@@carltonbanks5470 I'm willing to be stood corrected behind the point you made about BBTP and NL's big hitters shaking the label. But regardless of the fact that CM was rumbling under NL's glory period, what we all could possibly agree on is that when 1999 rolled around, NL's run stopped almost immediately and CM was popping since then. I'm sorry if I keep missing your point or whatever, but this is just my observation.

Master P is the best businessman ever in his era. P was a genius, but he didn’t wanna work for anybody. His grandfather once said It’s No Limit to your success. That’s how he named his record label, No Limit Records, for a reason. He gonna be putting out as much albums as he wanted to. This has made a lot of record executives mad, so he didn’t care he did it his way. He formed his group, TRU, with his brothers Silkk and C-Murder. He may not be the best rapper to do it, so he wasn’t trying to be a great rapper. He was a pure hustler at heart just like Birdman. The early sound was with the Bay Area based producers who made his earlier records. Nobody in the Bay Area even liked his music. When he came to New Orleans, he brought in Beatz By Tha Pound to produce their sound. I felt Beatz By The Pound became his main production team who did mostly all of the production work for all of the No Limit artists. He signed a lot of local artists like Mia X, Ghetto Commission, Mercedes, Silkk The Shocker, C-Murder, Mystikal, KLC, Carlos Stephens, Choppa, Mr. Serv-On, 504 Boyz, Snoop Dogg, Mac, Magic, Romeo Miller, Fiend, Kane & Abel, Soulja Slim, The Gambino Family, Sons of Funk, Prime Suspects, Anthony Boswell, head of Bout It Bout It Management, served as the vice president of operations as well as head of management for the label. As No Limit's popularity and mainstream coverage increased, so did its roster. The label signed producers DJ Daryl, Randy Jefferson, K-Lou & Dez as well as Master P's main production team, Beats by the Pound (KLC, Mo B. Dick, Craig B, Odell, and Carlos Stephens), in addition to solo artists Soulja Slim, Full Blooded, Magic, Skull Duggery, Short Circuit, Ghetto Commission. Together they put out 23 albums in 1998, 10 of which went platinum and 11 gold, in some instances their only releases on the label. The biggest growth stunt was when many of the local acts were leaving. Beats By The Pound members Odell, Craig B, Mo B. Dick, and KLC left No Limit due to a dispute with Master P. Mr. Serv-On and Fiend left No Limit to go independent, and Mia X left No Limit and went on a musical hiatus to take care of her family. Kane & Abel were dropped from No Limit in 1999 due to their investigation involving drug activity. Sons of Funk, Steady Mobb'n, Prime Suspects, and The Gambino Family all parted ways with the label. By 2000, Ghetto Commission, Mystikal and Big Ed had left the label. The following year, the label lost Mac to prison after he was convicted of manslaughter in connection to a nightclub shooting; he was ultimately sentenced to thirty years in prison. Snoop Dogg had left No Limit after his three-year contract with No Limit expired, and C-Murder distanced himself from No Limit to focus on his own label, TRU Records. Many of the acts from the old No Limit roster weren’t happy with working with New York based producers on their albums, so that was the main reason they decided to leave the label. In 2001, No Limit's deal with Priority expired, and No Limit subsequently signed with Universal Records for a $10 million distribution deal. After the signing, Master P renamed No Limit to The New No Limit. The New No Limit's roster included Master P, Lil Romeo, Silkk The Shocker, 504 Boyz, Magic, and Choppa. The New No Limit under Universal failed to achieve the same success as the previous incarnation of No Limit. I don’t think we will find another powerhouse label like No Limit ever again. They were like the Motown of the South. Everybody was bumping No Limit music until they was tired of it until Cash Money came along and took over

Oh my God!!! No Limit Records! I was (and still am) a huuuuuge fan. I'm sure folks remember "No Limit Tuesdays." Our lil' $20 used to burn a hole through our pockets because we wanted to buy that new No Limit release so badly. My favorite releases ended up being Mystikal's _Unpredictable,_ Mac's _Shell Shocked,_ Mia X's _Unlady Like,_ Mr. Serv-On's _Life Insurance_ and just so much more. I've been around since they were operating independently and finding a No Limit release in a major record store was few & far between. I'd get the Yellow Pages and call Sam Goody, Tower and The Wherehouse just to find that debut Skull Duggery or Kane & Abel LP. The packaging was all to' up and tattered. Oh, I just love No Limit Records so much. Anyhow, what happened to No Limit Records? Time... Time happened to No Limit Records. Mr. Miller (Master P) has gone on record several times over the years stating that it doesn't last forever. The mainstream only gives artists a couple of years before they phase them out and move on to the next wave. I don't think it helped that Mr. Miller wasn't a dickrider. He kinda did what he wanted to do w/o the interference of anybody else. He wasn't all cliqued up w/ Puffy & Co. or anybody else. See, they don't want a black man who's self-assured. They want artists who are needy and thirsty. You've never heard about Mr. Miller in no same sex encounters. You've never heard about Mr. Miller compromising his integrity. But yeah man... What happened? Time happened. It was time for No Limit Records to sit it the fuck down, yo. Cash Money Records came in and just took all they shine. After 1999, I was done. The powers that be must've transferred all they magic over to Cash Money Records. I wasn't enthusiastic about No Limit Records anymore. I actually started listening to music that was kinda outside of my comfort zone. I was listening to different subgenres of rock, reggae and bubblegum pop. I was kinda all over the place.

Inside people from No Limit, said once Master P got cut from the NBA , he gave up on No Limit and said Fk everything. They said NBA Executives said they didn't want gangstas & thugs affiliated with their brand. An Master P gave up on everyone around him because he really wanted to make it to the NBA, because that was his ultimate dream. If you notice after that NBA preseason in 1999 when he got cut from the team, No Limit Records was done, he was done with everything

No Limit the label I was a fan of mainly because of Master P and his business savvy and Mystikal's energy! Mac, Mia X Kane and Abel, and Big Ed The assassin imo were the flagship lyricsits on the label! Imo after Master P's albums in around 2004 and 2005 was the point where the label fell off HARD!! I must admit most of the songs and videos they've put out I was a fan of! I would only buy Master P and Mystikal's albums! This was a good request!

You can't keep growing with the same sound. They would eventually hit the wall with BBTP. Cash Money wouldn't have still been around if Mannie would've still been the only sound. No Limit should gotten new artists and more producers to keep. P created a system that took him out.

As a no limit fan stunt number 3 was catastrophic like Gucci without Zaytoven , Dipset/Heatmakerz, etc. the music would still be ok but not memorable. Beats by the Pound was the fabric of the tank. Welcome home to MAC the coldest artist on the label bro was like the southern version of PAC imo.

My 3 reasons they fell off. 1 - P stop focusing on music tryna play basketball instead of continuing to grow the label.. 2 - he lost beats by the pound production that was the no limit sound 3 - shady business deals, most the artists wasn't making money & left & he lost the label for a tax issue

None of No Limit artist never had longevity like a good 5 or 10 year run. Mia-X left the game during her peak. Beats by the pound left during No limit peak. Mac & C-murder got locked up for a long bid. Soldier Slim got killed. Most of Mystical success came after he left No Limit. Silk faded out by his 3rd or 4th album. Snoop was on the downside of his career when he was on No Limit. Lil Romeo was a flash in the pan. Master P best days as a rapper was behind him once the 2000's hit.

1999 was the end of No Limit peak. 2000 was good but it was after Beats by the pound left due to money issues not during the peak. It was already on a decline. Mia X left the game due to her parents being killed in a car crash. Snoop was not on a downside in his career. His first album on No Limit sold 2M and NLTD sold 1M. Silk stopped making music for a min after his 4th album which still did well. Lil Romeo did his numbers. Last good album Master P was Good Side Bad Side in 2004

I needed to find a rap sound worthwhile and discovered No Limit at 14, around 1998. He had some standout acts: Fiend, Mystikal, C-Murder, Mac. Bout It, Bout II is a## whoopin music The New No Limit came early 2000's and it struggled to capture old glory.

Oversaturation killed No Limit's buzz. Putting out a lot of music is good because it keeps you visible but the customers get tired after a while. P had a chance to sign several next generation rappers but he declined because he didn't see the future. I'm surprised Master P hasn't sold the catalog yet.

Master P should've just stuck with music like Birdman did once Master P start doing other sh!t and went comercel and was on wrestling and playing basketball and being NFL manager for athletes that's when he lost the hood fans the music didn't sound the same no more and that's how Cash Money came through the door and ran with it Baby & Slim been sticking to what they been doing for the last 25 years and damn near still relevant with a Billion records sold it ain't a record label in history ever did that the industry can never take that away from Cash Money that's documented if Master P did that I don't think we would've never heard of cash money cause P had the game in a choke hold with a bunch of artists that was going platinum or gold every month
