Nihilego looking like Lillie is because of Lusamine's obsession with Nihilego, since Lusamine forcing Lillie to dress the way she does is a major part of Lillie's backstory. It's never explicitly stated, so it's a pretty good example of subtle visual storytelling. This is one of the many things USM did worse, since in USM Lusamine wasn't obsessed with Nihilego, so she had no reason to force Lillie to dress like one. In SM it actually served a purpose and tied things together, in USM it's like a bunch of loose threads laying around that don't connect to anything else.

Lillie's arc is about becoming self-reliant. To escape Aether she needed to rely on Nebby. To save Nebby she needed to rely on you. To get to a ruin she needed to rely on Oliva. To ward off a Team Skull Grunt she needed you again. The Bridge Scene is her taking a step towards relying on herself more and other less. That's why the confrontation with her mother has HER confronting her. Sure, she still needs help; she isn't a trainer herself and doesn't set out to be one until the end, but she confronts her mother because that's HER arc. If only there was a real sequel.

Sun and Moon is honestly one of my all-time favorite Pokemon games. Yes, it has its problems. It was a little too hand-holdy, it went a little too hard on the cutscenes, and USUM was basically just glorified DLC. It was simple writing, granted, but it was still good.

I was actually thinking about your point on how Lillie is actually the main character of the story while we, the player, are tasked with doing the heavy lifting and thought "why can't the player be the fusion of Lillie and us?" We would take the place of Lillie in the story, and her being timid could explain why we are mute and our lack of expression in the cutscenes. We would escape from Lusamine and try to live a normal life that we always wanted completing island challenges and collecting Pokemon. Eventually, our past will catch up with us and that moment where Lillie shouts at her mom could be us, which would be the first time the player would actually speak in the story. It be a fun break and subversion of expectations with the usual trends in Pokemon storytelling, and could've possibly made the SM story better. Just a thought I guess.

I was confused how to use HMs or what TMs and HMs were and the fact that there's something called a TM Case, the fact that your pokemon is sent to the PC after your party is full. While I don't want it to be super hand-holdy, FRLG was difficult for me to understand basic concepts in Pokemon. If they wanted to focus more on story, they should've gone all in. [With a skip cutscene option, of course] Imagine that Lillie is basically the same character, but with a customizable appearance. She can be male or female, and the Lillie we know is just her canon appearance. It would've probably divided people even more to have a protagonist with a defined personality, but at least Game Freak would be trying new avenues for the series. But it would've been better to give us the option to turn it off or change it to a different program. Makes me wish they kept something like DevNav, it was one of the best features of ORAS.

I liked sun and Moon but I do agree that there quite a few flaws that the game has. I get what you mean by saying it feels incomplete but at the same time. Literally every other gen has this issue before the third version comes out (RS, DP) so with that logic everyone should hate every single first version. As for USUM it was a missed opportunity for GameFreak to do sequels again but I guess since BW2 sold so low they assumed the fans have spoken and have steered away from making more ambitious sequels. So, not sure if this has been brought up yet but I guess I'll say it anyways. About the laziness of the Island Trials, I remember hearing a while ago (around the time the games came out) that gym leaders were originally planned for Sun and Moon, but near the end of development, Masuda (or someone else) came up with the idea of Island Trials and rushed to implement them into the games. Can't confirm how legitimate this is but it does explain why most of the trials are lazy. Not trying to defend the game, just thought this was something interesting to mention. :)

Kahili appears out of no where, seems like the cut golf course attached to the hanu resort might have been a place for some type of trial involving her, but that's my personal speculation. It seems like there was a lot missing in these games. Pirate ship and golf course in akala bothers me so much.

How to fix these games: • Stop making one dimension characters and completely develop them giving them more than 3 appearance or text boxes • Lusamine and Guzma were the only rescuable thing for me but they felt incomplete. Just like almost any character in the main saga. Not telling everything and limiting to some text (last point) ruins your potential. • Imagine Lillie really taking example on your avatar and really growing strong, even helping you to fight in crucial situations like Lusamine or Nihilego. Imagine making a postgame where some years pass and she returns to the region after a journey to be an optional strong boss instead of fucking Red who did REALLY took you as THE example. Do you like real woman who became strong or... A crybaby who never grows up? Its funny because in the Spin off Mystery Dungeon Explorer of the Sky you also have a close character (your partner) who probably loves you and REALLY START BEING WEAK to be developed step by step INTO SOMEONE STRONG AND SMART taking example on the effort of YOUR AVATAR. The gap is noticeable. And it's a big loss because i would love to see a Lillie like that. • Imagine if Lillie and your avatar did REALLY start a relationship and for USUM the main character was other and she was Married after several years timeskip with your contrary gender avatar as... A fucking Elite 4 with her husband/wife being the champion. • Imagine if fucking USUM was a game where you as another NEW and not recycled avatar was a game where in pure Chrono Cross fashion (a PS1 game) you did explore 2 worlds: Homeworld where everything was right like your SM avatar did everything right and Alter World where everything went wrong and you have to fix the dark consequences (Example: Lusamine dead, your first avatar dead, ultra beast domination over people, Guzma not reforming etc etc) and avoid any chance of the Alter World fusing with Homeworld. But nope, better make half-done characters who could be good, make many fillers and you have another game. Given the fanbase's opinion on much spin offs and GEN5 back in the day it ends being understandable. I really would have liked a story like i did point above. Yikes... When fanon easily beats canon. And of course we didnt talk about the gameplay. Gen 1 and 2 are excused to have 1v1 like NES Dragon Quest 1 because of GB limitations. But we are not in the GB anymore. 2v2 or 3v3 should be the norm. Difficulty curve issues, and several other problems which are recurring in the series. Yikes.

However the most insulting thing and really shows you how burnt out and careless they are with Pokemon now is their reaction to that challenge they didn't go "oh wow kids have more distractions these days well we better make sure we make these games as engaging and fun as possible to keep their attention" they went wow we're going to have to work extra hard and be more creative to create a game to keep kids engaged? 24:12 I think tha gamefreak has forgotten what makes a videogame different from a film or movie... Its the interactivity, and the fact that YOU are the main character. I dont get why gamefreak is so adimate about having you be a side character to some other main character, its counter to what videogames, especially RPGs are about. What if the player's role here? Same as always, get all the pokemon and the badges, go through the game. But every other game there's more to it. Your role involves stopping an evil team, doing something bigger than just catching every pokemon.
@dovevanity42523 жыл бұрын
I'd personally argue that it is rather common for RPGs/adventure games to have the protagonist/POV character to be a generic chosen one and a silent protagonist who acts as players mirror to the soul, with the party members and/or other major characters being the heart of the story. Super Paper Mario, Undertale/Deltarune, a good number of Shin Megami Tensei games, Majoras Mask (and Twilight Princess as well), Fire Emblem Three Houses and Fantasy Life are a few examples that come to my mind when it comes to games where the supporting characters are the real main characters and the player character is just in for the ride, and those are just tip of the iceberg. Sure, there are more active protagonists in RPGs who are actual characters w character arcs and such (the Trails and Tales of games come to mind), but they are actual characters rather than avatars the player projects into. Pokemon is a series where I feel having a protagonist being an actual character rather than a blank slate won't work, largely because how a big appeal of pokemon is immersion and kinda, US becoming part of the world.
@Yipper643 жыл бұрын
@@dovevanity4252 The thing is in all of those other games, the player character actually *does* things that help the plot. Sure, the story comes largely from a lot of the other characters, and yeah that is part of what makes pokemon work, but my point is that gamefreak has gotten away from even that. Remember how the pokemon going crazy was just litterally a news headline that Leon took care of in SWSH? Its that sort of thing thats the problem with pokemon nowadays. It doesnt break the immersion to have the player actually have some agency in the story.

@@dovevanity4252 Not Shin Megami Tensei. Even though SMT has silent protagonists, it’s still ultimately the player’s story. And yeah, the ultra beasts are cool & weird as heck and actually feel threatening. Even the box legends were cool, and meaningfully worked into the game's narrative via Lillie & Nebby. And the sos mechanic was not only a compelling new shiny hunting method, it also implied life & ecology to wild pokemon apart from just existing to be caught by the player. Pokemon Sun was my first ever core series pokemon game on my first ever Nintendo device, Nintendo 2ds, that my father bought from Canada. Being an Indian, we only get to watch Pokemon on TV we can't play TCG or the core series games (Pokemon Go is popular here, though). Therefore i have feelings attached to Pokemon Sun. I deleted my file that i completed in 2018 and restarted the game and completed it with my team having ash greninja, incineroar, a decidueye that i got as a rowlet from wonder trade, a mega Charizard x from wonder trade and solgaleo and zygarde. My favourite Pokemon will always be litten and his family because they were my first ever Pokemon and i was closely attached to them. Generation 7 Pokemon games have such awesome relaxing music especially in the pokemon centre and the post game credits really brought tears into my eyes. I still remember the day 5 years back when I first completed the game as a hardcore Indian Pokemon fan. I really don't take kindly to anyone who disrespects generation 7 games. Advances in gameplay that generation 7 did: The return of different overworld music depending on the time of day, which was originally introduced in Generation IV. A new villainous team, Team Skull. Eighteen Generation I Pokémon have a form unique to Alola known as a regional form; this aspect of Generation VII is based on selective pressures which occur in the real world. The addition of the Rotom Pokédex, a special Pokédex inhabited by a Rotom that doubles as a real-time map on the bottom screen of the Nintendo 3DS. The 3D models used for characters on the overworld are refined, and Trainers can be seen behind their Pokémon during battle, similar to Pokémon Colosseum, XD: Gale of Darkness, and Battle Revolution. Several NPC Trainers are shown to keep their Pokémon in Poké Balls other than the standard Poké Ball. It is possible to see stat changes during a battle. The new QR Scanner allows players to register Pokémon in their Pokédex and receive event Pokémon. The addition of Poké Rides, which allow players to summon Pokémon that they can ride to access otherwise inaccessible areas and thus the removal of HMs. The addition of Hyper Training, a system that allows players to exchange special Bottle Caps to maximize the IVs of their Level 100 Pokémon. Source: Bulbapedia It's also the only Pokemon game up until that point where the villainous team (team skull) weren't seeking the titular legendary for its world ending power. And also the first one where a character's family problems are shown in depth rather than just being obscure like N or silver. Let's appreciate generation 7 for how unique it was, it was peak Pokemon gameplay.

I loathed Sun and Moon primarily because I had tasted X and Y, which offered a tease of what the games could be like in 3D and what an older protagonist could look like in the universe... it felt so fresh and promising (apart from the story), but then Sun and Moon came along with five-year-old protagonists and far less customization than X and Y had already showed were possible. Didn't like the aesthetic or camera control compared to X and Y, either... and really hated the fact that the D-pad as a optional control device was dropped entirely... the 3DS sticks were okay, but nowhere near as good for accurate small movements as the D-pad. Also, in terms of memorability, that's pretty subjective - even though I spent longer in Sun/Moon than X/Y, I don't remember a single character... apart from the friend/rival (don't recall his name). I vaguely remember Team Skull, but I found them incredibly thematically annoying. Sure, Team Yell was worse, but the moment I saw the daggy, heads-lolling-to-the-side Skull members I facepalmed, and I don't recall a single Skull encounter where I wasn't desperate to skip through or past them. Sure, Mega Evolution was a pretty average idea, but that's why I rarely (if ever) used it... unlike in Sword/Shield, where you ABSOLUTELY had to use the gimmick. Z-moves were interesting, but to use them I would have to be playing Sun or Moon...

Because of the fucking cutscene and the fact that i was also low on battery. Like, goddammit Game Freak, 33 whole ass minutes of cutscene. Honestly with regards to Rideable Pokemon and the removal of HMs, I was in the "likes HMs" ballpark, especially how HG/SS actually had special animations for your following Pokemon using an HM, but at the same time I was upset with how they were required to take up a move slot. I was hoping that one day a Pokemon game would make it possible to register an HM move to a Pokemon without it taking up a move slot, acting only as a summonable field move. When I heard about the Rideable Pokemon I thought "Oh man, are they finally going to make the HMs visibly useable?" I figured that you'd be able to register your Pokemon to be able to bike, dowse, fly, surf, etc. Imagine my sadness when I discovered that, no, you're just given the ability to summon Pokemon that aren't yours to bike/dowse/whatever. That made me sad. Sure, I get to Surf on the back of a Lapras (again) or ride a Tauros, but they're not *my* Lapras or *my* Tauros. And there's lots of other non-gen-1 Pokemon I'd love to both train and ride on, like Milotic or Scolipede. Obviously they don't need to use all of the Pokemon available, but it would've been lovely if you were able to register some of your own Pokemon for Rideable status... This region has way too much feel of "You're a tourist" for me anyways, with the handholding and all. You're supposed to be living here, but I expected the end of the game to just have your mom come up and say that it's time to go back to Kanto and it's you leaving on the ship instead of Lillie.

Pros: new Pokémon designs Very pretty art style Pulls away from the usual gym stuff Cons: way too much dialogue No opportunity for exploration Too much hand holding

Moon was such a bore, don’t know why people overhype it so much. As for Pokemon Moon, it didn’t really grab me as much as previous games did and it’s a shame to hear Ultra doesn’t improve much if anything.

I guess the reason why I don't mind the cutscenes is because I've played many other games that have them exactly like they were in Sun & Moon, especially with most past 3D Zelda games. Whole reason I didn't like USUM was because it just utterly fucked the entire Pokémon canon for me, more than what people said about Zinnia said in ORAS with the whole Mega Evolution timeline thing. It's a multiverse now, babyyyyyyy. Trainer Red can be a grown man AND a teenager at the same time

HM's where never the problem. It was just very annoying you had to sacrifice a move slot for them, especially with the shitty moves like cut and flash. If a pokemon learns these moves once and then could use these moves in field, even after they forget them for battle, this would habe been the best solution. You use YOUR pokemon for exploration and don't need to sacrifice a move slot or have an HM slave in the team. Why did gamefreak not came up with this simple solution? Bc they are lazy af.

The critique with the story nails it. If you as the player are not the main protagonist the story id flawed and pointless. I'm advocating to make pokemon in an open world sandbox that could slightly open open up in the first half of the game but in the second half you should be able to tackle the gyms in any order you like. Getting rid of a overarching story would fix many problems, the to long cut scenes, the hand holding etc and could be replaced through little story fragments or quests you stumble upon by exploring the world. By this the focus would go back to you, the player, and your journey to become the champion.

Well, I guess that was fixed in BDSP with the Pokétch.

Making Lillie the playable character would make the game feel much more restricted than it already is since it wouldn’t make sense for her to casually run around catching all types of pokemon since she relies on using repels during the first portion of her character arc, doing that may be better for the story but it would ruin the gameplay I agree that it would’ve been cool to have a trainer battle with her but that would’ve made her feel too much like Wally and her character arc leads her to the point of wanting to start her journey as a pokemon trainer, so her having an OP team to fight against wouldn’t make much sense, although that would’ve been cool to see if Gamefreak decided to make sequels instead of alternate timeline games

I think it was USUM that ultimately ruined gen 7. It exposed the problems with SM, USUM and the entire business practice of gamefreak, Pokémon company, creatures inc, Nintendo or whoever it was. I’m not gonna act like SM was perfect but it at least tried to be something (even tho it was purposely left unfinished).

Why are the Kalos Gym Leaders so forgettable when many older gym leaders are still stuck in their gyms? Is it just nostalgia? If it does it doesnt explain Hoenn and Sinnoh ones. Nothing is more useless than the Rotom Dex map, in the overworld they just laid out everything, ruining the surprise, while in the few caves that it could be useful in, the map is unusable. Since the protagonists have to be as silent and generic as possible "because muh player stand in" how would you make them more expressive in cutscenes?

My opinion has always been that the Pokemon games’ single player experiences got better and better with more fleshed out plots from 1-5, absolutely peaking in story telling, content, and post game in Black 2 & White 2. Then Gen 6 came and like….honestly i can *not* for the life of me figure out what happened there. I know people say a Z could’ve saved Gen 6 in the court of public opinion but i disagree! I think the reason we didn’t get a Z version was because it was already unsalvageable. At any rate though, i believe Sun and Moon took a step back in the right direction. I personally didn’t like it, i prefer gyms over those ridiculous island trials, i really didn’t like Z-moves, the map design and dungeons were *far* to simple. But compared to Gen 6 the plot was actually really interesting, the characters had a bit more agency, (a *bit*) I fucking *loved* Alolan forms, etc. There was some smaller stuff too that i think ultimately made it a much more enjoyable and familiar experience than Gen 6. X and Y were seriously devoid of most things that i consider staple of Pokemon and make it what it is for me, and Sun and Moon brought…. *some* of those things back. SOME. Of course USUM were basically the same fucking game, so that was lame. But then SWSH pretty much took all the steps back to Gen 6 and then went even further and further till now? Gen 8 is almost objectively the worst Gen. Its not even close tbh.
@justintran59632 жыл бұрын
Personally I give X and Y a bit of slack due to those games being their first 3D games. They had to make a new region (with all of the implications of that), 72 new pokemon, 721 3D pokemon models, all 3D trainer models, mega forms for a decent amount of Pokemon, etc. I can forgive them for putting story and characters on the backburner.

Personally I liked USUM way more than sun and moon they made the game more wacky added difficulty and a bunch of quality of life features that weren't in the previous games, I just spent more time in USUM another positive being that shiny hunting is super streamlined in USUM with wormholes, masuda method, and adrenaline orbs.

Why make so many changes and keep the same freaking starter types ... I mean you get rid of gyms but can't even do things like rock/flying/fighting starters and make ice and dragons available early?

The Sun and Moon games were good, they could've been better, however the cheapest cash grab was USUM which just shows how the devs really care about the series as opposed to worshipping that of greed, itself. Also why i can't, in good conscience, buy into the series past Scarlet and Violet. I'm not even buying into their cut content trick that they've had the audacity to try again after a buggy pile, buggier than a termite mound.
