Why Porsche Macan SUVs have the big oil leak problem?

This is 100% accurate and thanks for the video. These oil leaks are very common on the Macan. Just read the forums. I had the issue on my 2016 Macan S and I'm still not convinced the issue was completely resolved by my local dealer. When the issue was diagnosed, I asked the SA how common it is and his response was "far more than it should be." I was also told that the factory has made no adjustments to the torque specs or bolts in later model Macans. My sense, too, is that there's no factory specified fix for the issue (as no recall or bulletin has been issued for the problem). In other words, the techs are left to their own devices to determine how to repair the issue which will lead to further problems and potential fails. Luckily, I'm still under warranty. If you're not, expect at least a $5K bill for this repair. Absolutely inexcusable for Porsche to not address this issue for an ever increasing number of Macan owners.

I think you are spot on with the same issue on the VW Tiguan. Lady friend of ours bought a one year old Tiguan around 6 yrs ago and it had engine oil leak. Not sure specifically from where. Luckily the vehicle was still under Warranty but she got stuffed around being a lady. She had to take her car to the dealer several time before it was fixed after she said she will complain to consumer protection authority. Watching from Australia.

The main BMW N20 engine issue is failure of the plastic timing chain guide. Those are known to randomly fragment into pieces. The fragmentation typically causes one of two issues. One, the fragments get lodged in the chain and cause it to skip a tooth. The other is the fragments land in the oil system and block oil flow throughout the engine. Either situation is potentially fatal to the N20 engine. These N20 failures were so common that BMW lost a class action lawsuit over them.

Well this is definitely unfortunate as they drive really well. I thought BMW using soft magnesium bolts on the water pump (I changed one on an X5 we had) was bad but this is a lot worse because loss of oil can be fatal for an engine. As for modern DFI motors I change the oil every 5000 miles because of the potential for oil dilution. Thanks for the video.

Had a Macan GTS that was diagnosed with a cracked bolt on the timing chain cover causing loss of oil. They had to drop the engine out of the vehicle in order to perform the service. Luckily it was still under warranty. The vehicle was never the same. I traded it on a 2019 base Macan. I'll be watching out for this problem on my new Macan . If you have your car serviced at the dealer, they will not tell you that you have a leak as they have been instructed not to until you’re out of warranty. This helps them, avoid a mass recall. The oil leak is rather slow so they can get away with not saying anything. Plus, until you take the bottom cover off, you won’t see any oil leaking on the ground as the felt on the cover absorbs the oil.

This is the challenge of combining two topics in your video: 1. Talking about the oil leaks and design defect and 2. The natural conclusion of whether to buy a Macan or not. Your factual points are valid. Let’s also keep it real; these are not cheap vehicles. Unless you’re talking a preowned or really stripped down new vehicle, these are 70k + when optioned. Valve cover leak isn’t the end of the world. Macan was made to be sporty, not only to cater towards the lower market. These are expensive new. Replacing the HPFP at 40k miles is an absolutely ridiculous recommendation. Finally, early BMW N20 had timing chain GUIDE issues due to poor guides and 10-12k oil intervals. Not fuel pump. The Porsche fix was to release stronger aluminum bolts (not steel) for the timing chain cover. Earlier you had to drop the engine and replace the timing chain cover and gasket, plus install new (defective-weak) bolts. The bolts actually crack, which is strange. That means that during assembly at the factory, the bolts are over-torqued and crack or the bolts were defective. Then over time the driver will experience oil leaks at low mileage. Seems to happen on both the earlier 3.6L V-6 Porsche engine and even the new Audi 3.0L/2.9L V-6 engines. Every time you visit the Porsche dealership have them check these bolts for cracks and look for oil leaves. If they haven't already, have the dealership replace these bolts with the stronger bolts. It might be that other engine covers have loose or cracked bolts (valve covers, etc.).

Macan had very low head room in the drivers seat for me and my wife and I am under 6FT forget about rear leg room in the back. I can say that a Macan is not a better built car compared to a Cayenne, it can't because its price tag is 50k+. (Certified porsche tech. 2011+ Gen 2 cayenne is a much better built car by a mile, way better built quality, better brakes, better suspension, bigger and better brakes, entertainment system, interior with no fake leather seats like the macan, cayenne has a way better built engine including forged pistons on turbo cayennes and piston oil cooling and Asin reliable Japanese transmission ect. Non return valves/PCV right under the cover. Check them often and replace them regularly. Just as important as the fuel pumps and failure is more common. My car had one of two valves torn for more than a year, without a single CEL and 3 fruitless visits to the dealer. Long term stress from it could easily be the root cause of these leaks.

Thats covered in my other videos PCV/AOS is an easy detection with a monometet in/WC reading. Problem is dealers do not have this tool or maybe they just dont know how to one. Pcv or AOS across the board goes bad on pretty much all german cars and should be check regularly. Glad they fixed your.

Looking a title and watching video, poor analogy... Many manufacturers use aluminum bolts. They’re lighter and they’re one-time use typically. So for performance vehicles, such as BMW, Porsche etc...etc, this is the norm and a good excuse for manufacturers to sell more expensive parts. Yes aluminum bolts are more expensive than steel. As soon as this guy said Porsche should use metal bolts (Aluminum is a metal alloy) he lost credibility. For those of you that said they are not interested in the Macan after watching this video; you need to do more research and get off KZbin... Yes, I’m a former mechanic, yes I own Porsche products, 2020 Macan and 2017 Carrera. My two cents...and still worth my time to know that some Macan have oil leak issues...
@TopAutomotiveInc
@TopAutomotiveInc 4 жыл бұрын
The title is pretty accurate, we work on 70% of Porsche's and see the same parts failing. There is way too many cheap parts, plastic hose fitings can leak, and we should not be replacing them on vehicles that are only 3 years old on 50,000 miles. This is one of the first Porsche designed engines to borrow the junk VW/Audi HPFP that leak fuel into the crankcase when they fail, there is just no exuse for this. I have replaced way too many timing chains due to engine oil fuel dilution going back to VW/ Audis. Fuel mixing = major engine wear to all lubricating components. Aluminum bolts that are used as a fastener are a poor excuse for weight savings, manufactures use this excuse. This nothing but cost savings due to (bean counters). Most metal bolts are coated with zink and alum flake, stainless bolts are also safe to use with aluminum. Manfucatures like Porsche and others have used steel bolts for cylinder heads, case halves, valve covers, timing covers, Brake calipers and many more engine parts and they have had zero issues. Why don't they have they not switched to all aluminum and why stop here? Simple answer, because engines would fail and explode! When Porsche did use aluminum fasteners for the vario cams on Panamera and Cayennes, the vario cams were exploding engine would fail. Most early engines were failing left and right and needed to be re-called and replaced. What did Porsche replacement bolts alum bolts with now? Yep, Steel bolts! Bmw did the same exact thing on the Vanos bolts and had the exact same results and what are they using now? Yep, steel bolts. This is why there is an open ATI on all Macan's for this BS. There are zero benefits to save .000001 oz. However, this is good job security for Porsche and repair shops, so I don't mind, let them make junk, we will fix it. Cheers!

I’m with you completely on an informed consumer base, and I understand posters want to use provocative titles for their videos... I’ve owned several German cars over the years. Prior to buying the Macan S, only brands I had not owned were Audi and Porsche (bought Carrera S after Macan). All manufacturers dip in the parts bin of sister brands. Just look at ultra high-end British brands using German engines. In the case of the Macan, research showed 20% Audi content. This topic is very situational. If those parts are proven over time in another model, then that’s a good thing... I also own two Toyotas 2009 Land Cruiser and 1974 Land Cruiser (FJ40). You’d be hard pressed to find more reliable vehicles. So I’ve accepted that when you pursue “performance” vehicles there are trade-offs. Had a 2008 BMW 535i Sport. At the time and arguably now, the 5-series is the standard for sport sedans. That said, when things go wrong, they go really wrong. In my case high pressure pumps (3 times) and it bled oil from multiple places, which ultimately led to me trading it in once I was able to get it to only a few leaks...! So this is a long way of saying that it depends what a buyer wants. If you want bullet proof, buy Toyota or Honda. If you want performance you roll the dice and understand you will pay for it with expensive schedules maintenance and some design issues (like what you’ve pointed out) that better be covered by warranty...! My Porsches were third and fourth vehicles in driveway so not most people’s norm. For me, the process to make choices in major purchases is as follows: Look at major reviews and find trends....ie Macan shows up in multiple top small SUV reviews; Look at forums; drive vehicles; look at recalls/Tech Service Bulletins on vehicles you’ve down-selected; buy preowned (my 2020 Macan had 1509 miles on it); make financing decisions based on how long you anticipate owning it, and therefore covered by warranty; pull the trigger and enjoy! Only request I’d have for you is provide factual info (years affected and known successes in addressing issue) and less opinion. You were all over the place in your video, using terms like “great” and “would only buy it at a low enough price” in the same video... Regardless, here we are talking about your video, which should be helpful to a wide audience, so keep up the good work!

@@richl8988 this is a customers vehicle with all service records from Porsche. Design flaws have nothing to do with service records unfortunately. Manufacturers are making cars disposable these. This is not like my Porsche 911 Turbo with a Mezger engi bullet proof reliability. I compare to what a Porsche is supposed to stand for and so far the Macan is giving them a bad name. Those days are long gone now when cars were quality. I will just list a few, I have been fortunate to own over 17 Porsche's, 12 being 911s, currently have 3 left, including 8 BMWs "all sold" , 2 Audi's, 3 Mercedes AMG cars and a Ferrari 599GTB. My experience with quality and craftsmanship is pretty high. As a European shop, I am tired of the overpriced junk, that also goes for BMW, Audi and Benz. PORSCHE is still way better than the rest.
