Just to spread somore awareness, Sonic's design mentioned in the video was the modified western design by Greg Martin. Sonic's original design was from Japan, and was changed during the localization process. It was the base for Toei Sonic in the Sonic CD intro. That said, Sonic CD would likely have been many Americans' introduction to the more standard Sonic design during that time period, so the confusion is completely understandable. All in all tho, sick vid! I actually never truly understood all the discussions, but this was informative!

Fiction was always inspired by other fiction, since the dawn of storywriting. Inspiration =/= ripoff If it was the case, then Goku would've ripped off Sun Wukong at the beginning of the Dragon Ball, and by the start of Z, he became a copy of Superman.

Thanks for clarifying this that yes. Inspiration is different from ripping off. Inspiration is looking at something and taking ideas from it while not making it a 1 by 1 copy, more than likely will be different to it's original counterpart in some way. Ripping off is straight up copying someones homework on paper. In this case say if the chaos emeralds granted wishes instead of the form itself and you could argue the super form is a rip off however it also works differently from super saiyan and as of frontiers and a few other games has an entirely different moveset.

The answer is no. While there are similarities, like Silver, the Chaos Emeralds and Super Sonic. They aren’t direct copies. Even Shadow and Vegeta aren’t direct copies. If you look at Shadows backstory he has amnesia and is trying to get revenge by destroying the world. Shadow wants to destroy the world because he thinks that’s what Maria wants, Vegeta wanted to destroy earth because he wanted the Dragonballs. There’s no deep reason why Vegeta wanted to do this other then to defeat Frieza. We see at the end of SA2 Amy begs with Shadow to see the good in humanity and give them a chance, Shadow remembers what Maria ACTUALLY wanted and it was to protect humanity. Shadow goes super to help Sonic stop Space Colony Ark and dies in the process asking if Maria if he fulfilled her wishes. Vegeta is nothing like this, even when they are fighting Frieza, he wants revenge because Frieza killed the Saiyans. After when Frieza is dead we see Vegeta is still cold hearted and doesn’t really care for anyone, when we get to the Buu arc Vegeta grows and cares for his family and the earth but this is in an entirely different way then Shadow. Shadow went from a complete nihilist to a hero in the span of one game. This isn’t even mentioning Shadow the Hedgehog where we get the most insight on his character.

I said it before, and I'll say it again. The Sonic franchise does have a few inspirations from Dragon Ball, and denying that is just being in denial. BUT, there's exist a huge amount of differences to the point the similarities are pretty far and in-between. Silver was inspired by Trunks. I'm pretty sure there's even an official source for that. However, the two characters are drastically different. Trunks is basically just a regular saiyan. He's from the future, but he's no different than say Goku and Vegeta...just weaker. He's experienced and confident when we first see him. He knows what he needs to do, and he does it...when others don't get in his way. Silver is a hedgehog, but he's completely different from Sonic and Shadow. He doesn't even share their moves, instead having his own unique fighting style and set of abilities. Silver is a naive boy who got nervous when Blaze wasn't around the first time they got separated. He's lost, unlike Trunks, he didn't go back to save the hero. He got manipulated and went back to kill him. The two only share the "destroyed future from a threat and goes back in time to stop it". But their deeper purpose, personalities, comparison with their peers, and so forth are just too different to call Silver a clone.

Another big difference between silver and trunks is how they're usually presented. in vs shows like death battle, you guys know the xeno vs archie one? Well, it's basically a fight between strongest offense vs strongest defense. Trunks has the upper hand when he's up close. Same with Silver when at a distance. Ofcourse, silver can slip pass trunks while trunks can power through. Trunks has fighting edge, while Silver has the environment. And that's kind of what dragon ball and sonic the hedgehog is all about. One franchise is good for the superpowered fights and beat 'em ups, while the other is good for using environment and traversal. It's probably why don't see much strength feats coming from knuckles when compared to sonic's speed feats. B'cuz it ain't about the beat' em ups like dragon ball. (Another reason is that these characters are not handled pretty well in the series.) Though, I can't say the same about frontiers and idw.

For me, Silver is similar to Trunks but isn't much of an exact copy or inspiration. 1. Silver came back to the past timeline because the antagonist of 06 (Mephiles) told him to do so. Trunks however just decided to do that. Another massive difference is that Silver's purpose during 06 was to kill Sonic, the protagonist, but Trunks went to the past to help Goku, who is also a protagonist. 2. Trunks isn't seen mostly in the present timeline as he is supposed to belong in the future otherwise he could potentially ruin the whole db timeline. Except for Silver, he is always present in the present timeline ever since 06 and it doesn't seem to be messing up Sonic's timeline at all. 3. Number 3 is a pretty obvious one. Silver can use telekinesis and can glide in the air at times. Trunks uses his sword and flies around most of the time. This is a big difference that many leave out when talking about this. Nobody sees Silver with a sword and neither does anyone see Trunks move objects with the power of his hand.

The Chaos Emeralds were always meant to be a collectable power up. Sure Super Sonic is similar to Super Saiyan, but there's also the fact sonic NEEDS the chaos emeralds to do that transformation. Really the only similarity is that sonic turns yellow and his hair sicks up, but that being said, there are lots of characters that have their hair start to float when they power up due to their "aura". For some reason, in dragon ball I never feel like his hair is actually flying up, more like it just points up for some reason, because his hair never really has to much physics, but Sonic's quills do.

A transformation that boosts Megamans powers by insane levels, covering him in pure light(like how mui was when it 1st appeared against jiren) at the cost of his stamina. He even does the hakai 1st. There's also a navi in the game called "Bass.exe", who shakes the cyber world with his presence like jiren and ui goku does. When I think about it, Sonic/marvel kinda did infinite zamasu 1st, as Solaris was going to consume all of time and space, the eggmen in sonic rush were going to erase sonic and blaze's dimensions and remake them as they wanted with the jeweled scepter, and thanos became the universe after absorbing the astral regulator. He even becomes an amalgamation of higher level beings in an earlier comic. A fusion of eternity, galactus, death, tribunal, etc.

Sonic takes inspiration from just about everything. Shadow is an inspiration of Bass. Silver is Future Trunks. The Death Egg is inspired by the Death Star from Star Wars. Tails' flying ability is taken from Goku's ability to fly by using his tail during the 21st budokai tenkaichi. Sonic's super form is an inspiration of SSJ. The 7 chaos emeralds are just the 7 dragon balls with a different concept. Silver Sonic is a gag of mecha godzilla. I feel like many other characters like knuckles, rouge, amy, and tails are inspired by dragon ball characters and various other anime characters out there.

Sonic did NOT copy Dragon Ball! The only thing similar about the two series are the characters. Dragon Ball is heavily inspired by Sun Wukong and Superman. Sonic was created because Sega wanted to rival Nintendo’s mascot (Mario), but Sonic actually has way more connections to the Flash (more so Wally West) in my opinion. Shadow is very similar to Mewtwo, but was recently confirmed to be inspired by Spawn (which makes sense). Goku and Sonic are friendly and prideful, but Goku is naive and idiotic, while Sonic is adventurous or egotistical depending on which version of Sonic it is. Vegeta is prideful and egotistical but never wins, while Shadow is edgy and stubborn but he sometimes wins. Some characters from DBS are similar to other Sonic characters. For example, the Goku Black Arc is similar to Sonic 06 because of the story, the characters (Goku Black and Zamasu are similar to Mephiles and Iblis), and how bad the writing was.

The Super Emeralds are a better version of the Chaos Emeralds as the Namekian Dragonballs are superior to the Earth’s Dragonballs. Super Sonic was definitely inspired by Super Saiyan. Sonic is often compared to Goku, but Goku has more connections to Superman than Sonic. And I personally believe that Sally Acorn is more like Bulma than Tails is. Goku and Sonic have two best friends (Krillin and Tails) who they have grown up with and fought. Both also have rivals who were enemies at first, but then became frenemies (Vegeta and Shadow). Both also have time-traveler friends who come from the future (Future Trunks and Silver) and they are enemies who try conquer Earth no matter how many times they lose to the main protagonist (Frieza and Dr. Eggman).

Since the Sonic O6 game Shadow was a completely different person. I have proof : In Sonic Adventure (2001) final boss, Shadow had started respecting Sonic and even called him the ultimate lifeform. After 2006 Shadow appeared less in the games and mainly as a boss fight sometimes. And in his short appearances he used to call Sonic weak and boosted himself about being the ultimate life form. Like what happened to him saying to Sonic that he is the must be the ultimate life form. (6:04).

The "Chaos Emeralds are knock-offs of the Dragon Balls" argument irks me more than any other. Just because there are multiple versions of them in groups of 7 doesn't mean the chaos emeralds are knockoffs. They are entirely different. The Chaos Emeralds are a power source, and The Dragon Balls are used to summon Shenron. The chaos emeralds down have any (known) consequences to spamming them, and the Dragon Balls can be corrupted if overused. Also, way too many 90's games have objects in groups of 7, so singling out the emeralds is stupid.

tbh, I don't see how the Chaos Emeralds are anything similar to the Dragon Balls besides there are seven of them. the Chaos Emeralds are more like the Infinite Stones than the Dragon Balls. the Dragon Balls can only summon Shenron and he grants wishes. but the similarities between the Infinity Stones and the Chaos Emeralds are that they grant you nigh-omnipotent levels of power and hax like reality warping and space-time manipulation.

The chaos emeralds, and super sonic while inspired and are a direct homage to super sayain and the seven dragon balls are the only similarities these two franchises really have outside of fighting literal gods. They have no real similarities out side of that, with maybe the adception of Siliver and Trunks, but even than dragon ball didn’t create the trop of a hero going back in time to save their future.

no😭crying rn Trunks is basically just a regular saiyan. He's from the future, but he's no different than say Goku and Vegeta...just weaker. He's experienced and confident when we first see him. He knows what he needs to do, and he does it...when others don't get in his way. Silver is a hedgehog, but he's completely different from Sonic and Shadow. He doesn't even share their moves, instead having his own unique fighting style and set of abilities. Silver is a naive boy who got nervous when Blaze wasn't around the first time they got separated. He's lost, unlike Trunks, he didn't go back to save the hero. He got manipulated and went back to kill him. The two only share the "destroyed future from a threat and goes back in time to stop it". But their deeper purpose, personalities, comparison with their peers, and so forth are just too different to call Silver a clone.

I think with Silver and Trunks I think they both inspire each other. In silver’s case in 06 it was stated before the game came out that Silver was inspired by trunks in DBZ and his back story in a way. But in the Goku Black Arc there are a lot of similarities to 06 and silvers story being one of them like how it takes place in a dystopian future, Goku Black being like the Iblis in that story, Mai being Blaze and etc.

You basically turn into a Golden spiky form that jumps over ramps, collects coins and rings in a destroyed world in order to hit a giant water (and fire based) monster to a pulp. Sound familiar? Their reasons for going to the past are different, there personalities are different(Trunks is a lot more serious or emotional while Silver is more naive and funny type), Trunks has mainly the same abilities as Goku and Vegeta while Silver has many different abilities from Sonic and Shadow.
