Dionysus was worshipped with sex rituals. Christianity promotes wholesome family values. The Last Supper was Christ giving the apostles bread and wine and declaring it to be his body and blood and anybody who participated in the meal was becoming a part of the body of Christ. The scene in the Olympics made Christ into an overweight woman and the feast into the body of the Greek god of drunkenness and sex, and one of the people at the table was a small child. It was not only a direct insult to Christianity, but it SHOULD be seen as a direct insult to everyone else as well. Whether you're a Christian or not, if you aren't a complete degenerate it should offend you anyway. The symbolism of overturning fellowship in love in favor of an orgy with a child should anger any decent human being. This was the Balenciaga stuff all over again.

I just think it's the least important thing in the world. Even if it is supposed to be the last supper, it's not like Da Vinci was at the supper. His painting is simply just a depiction of what he thought it was, making it just a painting of a dudes imagination of a dinner with Jesus. Nothing more nothing less. Now, why the hell was this performance going on for the OLYMPICS is the real issue. Why even have singers/bands when it should be displaying the athletic talent. What has been missed from Dr Grande's analysis is that the 'crown' resembled not a halo but a monstrance. A monstrance is used to house the consecrated Eucharist in Catholic churches. It is a very close resemblance and France is a Catholic country. It seems unlikely that this was unintentional. Also, it wasn't Joan of Arc on the horse; it was apparently a pagan goddess associated with the Seine river.
@Nerdy-By-Nature2 ай бұрын
Indeed, the claim is that it was Sequana the goddess of the Seine and daughter of Dionysus. But it is very interesting to me that Sequana is NEVER depicted as riding on a horse, only a duck boat. But they chose to have her ride in on a horse. Again, seems like an intentional choice.

It's a Biblical trope, lol, not just a painting.
@wolfumz2 ай бұрын
well, yeah, it's no secret it was a play on The Last Supper. The Last Supper is a painting. It's not the bible. In the same way that everyone recognizes The Mona Lisa, but no one knows who the woman Mona Lisa was, paintings can take on a life of their own, totally separate from their subject. Christians do not own this painting. I understand, the painting depicting a well known scene from the gospels, but it also has cultural meaning beyond that. To be frank I have a hard time understanding why this is so distressing to Christians. Throughout the western world, we all culturally Christian to some degree. Christians are not being harmed here, and I don't quite see how this is _so_ offensive, that it's like an intolerable assault on their human dignity. Compare this to the very real and harmful ways Christians discriminated against gays up until very recently. When I got out of college, I worked at a firm where they had fired sales reps and managers for being gay. Being gay was so stigmatized, that you had to keep it secret, in polite society. The AIDS crisis killed tens of millions of gay men in the EU and US, as governments bungled the response. There are places today where men and women are thrown into prison for being gay, some countries implement the death penalty. Even when my kids were growing up in the 90s and 00s, being gay was still quite contentious and highly stigmatized, the boys all used it as a slur. Prior to same sex marriage, LGBTQ couldn't access the same civil/legal rights as straight couples. In pop culture, gay people were mocked all the time, and painted as predators. I knew someone who got kicked out of their house at age 17 (and this was in 2010's, not long ago), because they were gay, and their Christian parents couldn't tolerate that. A five second tableau vivant seems like small potatoes, IMO, by comparison.

Why didn't you bring up the 17th century painting that they claimed this performance is based on? It's called Le Festin des Dieux and you look it up. It looks exactly like the performance down to the halo around the central character's head, the chaotic nature of the poses and Dionysus sitting in the foreground. They even claimed it in the apology but you left that out.

There was food when Dionysus came out, he came out on a silver dinner platter. And from what I have seen from the producers and the assumed title ("La Cène sur une scène sur la Seine"), it was supposed to imitate the last supper. So I disagree, it seems this was intentional. Their non-apology also doesn't seem to state it was unintentional, which I would think would be the first thing to be highlighted if it was a mistake.
@nowakevelyne2232 ай бұрын
@Roofhack2 ай бұрын
@@nowakevelyne223 First, no one cares about a play on words for a performance. Second, there is no other 'play on words' the director could have used that didn't include the last supper? I am now thankful I did not watch the opening ceremony. Not only that, but I will now not be watching any of the Olympics. If this debauchery is deliberately presented to children as part of the opening, what else are they going to display as the days unfold. Now I don't care what they want to call themselves, but I do care when semi naked individuals are presented to minors, especially, as in this case, where they are saying this is acceptable behaviour. It is not. This was a deliberate attempt to offend, and they achieved their aim, people are rightly offended. They pushed their own bigoted views into the faces of children and adults across the globe regardless of whom they offended or affected. Disgraceful.
