Kinda? Maybe?
In which John discusses the consumptive circumstances that led to the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the start of World War I.
Much more recently, I wrote a piece for the Washington Post about the ongoing horror of tuberculosis: wapo.st/458l2m2

Hi. In a shocking turn of events, I made a video about tuberculosis. Also, I have written an op-ed for the Washington Post about tuberculosis, which came out today. It's about a young man I met at the Lakka TB hospital in Sierra Leone in 2019, what happened to him, and why. Thanks for reading it: wapo.st/458l2m2 -John

Actually, multiple studies have looked at Betteridge's law (what you're describing) and in all three cases, there's not much of a trend, but "yes" was actually slightly more likely than "no"! See the Studies section of the "Betteridge's law of headlines" Wikipedia article for a summary, but here are the three in question: 1. James M. Cook & Dawn Plourde (2016 Scientometrics article) - "Do scholars follow Betteridge's Law? The use of questions in journal article titles" 2. Mats Linander (2015 blog post) - "is betteridge's law of headlines correct?" 3. John Mola (2017 The Aggie Brickyard article) - "Betteridge's Law in Ecology"

My mere existence is because of the tuberculosis. My grandad had it and my grandma kept visiting him in the hospital. He came to the conlusion that she must really love him and started the romantic pursuit once - to everyone's surprise - he regained his health. He was from a poor family and wouldn't have flirted with her without the Yolo experience you get from almost losing your life in an early age. My grandma is now 96 but he has already gone to the other side.

I partly exist because of TB. My Nan in Ireland was due to marry a local boy, but his family decided against it because of the contamination stigma and belief it made women infertile. She was given the treatments available at the time which meant being sent alone to another city away from her family for over a year. She recovered (with horrible treatment scars she had to hide), but moved to London so the stigma wouldn’t follow her and she could have a shot at marriage. Then she met my grandfather who wouldn’t have been able to marry in Ireland either as he was raised in the Christian brothers orphanage.

Fun fact: the bomb that was thrown didn’t miss, the Archdukes’ body guard batted it away from the car but sadly he hit it directly into the car behind them. Also the Archduke and his wife were the ones who wanted to go back out, they demanded to go to the hospital to see the victims of the bombing… Extra credits has a really good video on this

And the black hand wasn't trying to free Serbia from Austria Hungary, as they weren't part of A-H. Serbia was it's own sovereign kingdom. They wanted a greater Serbia with all Slavs being under Serbian rule, and wanted to start the journey towards it by starting a conflict in and about Bosnia. (As Bosnia was occupied by A-H due to the treaties of the Berlin conference.) And the following annexation of Bosnia is another messed up thing... When the russian foreign minister told his A-H counterpart in a casual talk that "nobody would care if A-H annexed occupied Bosnia" he didn't expect his counterpart to act, and act quickly. A-H mistook this as legitimation by Russia and annexed occupied Bosnia. This russian minister lost his job, and became a life long Austrophob (and i think ambassador to france for the next years. A position in the leadup to WW1 that could never impact french sentiment and actions in any way at all ;-) )

My grandfather died in 1938 of TB in a sanitarium when my father was 6 years old. It just occurred to me that the word Sanitarium must have something to do with sanitation by isolation to prevent the spread of the disease, given this one was in Houston, not exactly a warm dry climate. My father and his 2 siblings all would test positive for TB for the rest of their lives, but were asymptomatic. None of us children cousins ever tested positive.

I mean, the same applies to basically any disease of extreme poverty. The Black Death is still a thing and was a pretty big problem on madagascar a few years ago, but for most of us it's a thing from the 13th century. The reason it's an 'old' disease here is because it basically no longer exists if you can afford extremely cheap treatments...it's just that a significant fraction of the world cannot because of systematic inequity.

You know, listening to the narrative, something occurs to me. First, Archduke Ferdinand gets sent to Sarajevo, a city full of assassins. Three assassins are sent to kill him, two of whom fail and none of them have cyanide pills strong enough to kill them, (but they all have TB.) Their companions convince the archduke that it's safe to continue the tour, even though it clearly isn't. Then the driver of their car manages to stall right in front of a deli where the third assassin is having lunch, making Ferdinand and his wife sitting ducks. Add to this, I heard somewhere that nobody in the Royal House of Austria liked old Franz and it sounds like they were all trying to get rid of him!

i love the John vids. i look forward to the thoughtful way he investigates the human condition. The kind analysis that he brings to complex issues. The fact that he calmly suggests that ,you know, things might be complex and so getting a simple read on said things isn't always the easiest so we should really all try and give each other some grace. was i looking for more about tuberculosis? no. was i surprised to see it? also no. When I watched i the short immediately afterwards, i realized that it was an endorsement of Crown Hill Cemetery. Another long time talking point. Again, not at all surprised.

Tuberculosis and to some extent malaria also put Asheville, NC, on the map. It also killed my great-grandmother and both her sisters, at ages 35, 42, and about 50.

How much would it cost to end tuberculosis? You often talk about it as something that only exists because of wealth inequality - lets say a billionaire decided to be generous, what would removing this disease cost? Could it be done?

Whats up Doc, Thank you for continuing to display forward the call to arm needed for global strife. The inspiration of your actions continues to be a near daily occurrence to me, DFTBA the whole bit, you two and the work you do are just a grand representation of how a physician should stand, sturdy able and respondent. This video a classic, needs to be added to the quintessential internet synopsis - ope there it is on youtube for all for free forever - Thanks again. And say Hi to John for me. love your books. peace out! hommies!

Omg "Farce" is one of the best ways to describe the bizarre sequence of events that led to Franz Ferdinand's death (although I tend to prefer the mostly synonymous term "comedy of errors")

TB, in a roundabout way, killed my dad's dad. (In actuality, it was cancer, but let me get there.) See, my dad's dad worked in mines while my dad and uncle were growing up. He was in several cave-ins. And one of those cave-ins left scarring on his lungs that apparently resembled scarring similar to what TB leaves. So when a doctor saw that scarring later, he assumed TB and had my dad's dad, my Nana, my dad, and my uncle all quarantined. But of course, my Nana, dad, and uncle showed no signs of TB. Eventually, it was discovered that it was scarring from a cave-in he was in, and after that, my dad's dad didn't trust doctors. Which meant that when he started feeling really bad and losing weight when my dad was approaching his late teens, he still refused to go to the doctor. He refused all the way up until he was literally yellow because the cancer had gotten to his liver. By the time he did go to a doctor, the cancer had spread too far, was everywhere, and it was a matter of *when* he would die, not *if.* As for why I call him my dad's dad instead of grandpa? I never got to know him. He died when my dad was 18, and whenever I've heard stories about him, my dad always says, "My dad . . ."
