Hi, thanks for the info. For the 1st and 2nd century, I do not see clearly that the confession needs to be to a priest. It just says to confess the sins, but not to a priest. What are your thoughts?

Great vid as always, Van. Do you have the whole "Did the Early Church..." series planned out, or are you figuring them out as you go? I'm really enjoying them.

Thank you, John! I appreciate your constant support to the channel! I am happy you are enjoying the series so far. The series is planned out to an extent. I have many episodes already written and created, as well as working on topics all the time. But I plan to space them out a bit so my viewers have a taste for other series on the channel. I am always up for suggestions for new topics for this series! So be sure to leave some recommendations haha!

In what way is confession the same as repentance? One can go to confession without repentance and one can have perfect contrition without confession.

Good video, but as far as Ignatius goes, "repentence" is too broad to declare as the sacrament of confession.

Very well researched video, Vanessa! I don't personally follow the catholic tradition, but I do highly value the practice of the early church. I would like to share some of these quotes in a teaching for my church. Do you have any links I could use to copy and paste some of these quotes? Thanks! -Lucas

I found this website: www.catholic.com/tract/confession I think it covers all the quotes you covered. I assume this may even be where you came across these quotes.

I don't know it seems a little bit read into the texts. There is obviously a good case for confessions to priests. You don't need to make texts say something it doesn't. Confession isn't the same as repentance. Confessing to the congregation isn't the same as confessing to a priest. These things may be connected but they're not equal.
@garrybraithwaite58074 жыл бұрын
The quote from Basil the Great is not the truth. In Acts 19 people did not "confess their sins to the apostles by whom they were also baptized." The story in Acts 19 is about Paul and whoever was with him. Paul was reluctant to baptize people in case it was said he baptized in his own name 1Cor 1. Paul said he was not sent to baptize but to preach the gospel. So can we assume it was the others that did the baptisms??? That's a big assumption to say the letters of Ignatius of Antioch support confession. Repentance is not confession. The earliest Christians confessed their sin publicly notice in the Didache it said "in the congregation thou shalt confess thy transgressions" no mention of private confession to a priest. So in the 1st century believers DID NOT "go" to confession.

Your comments are missing an important point, the confession was not made in private, as the Catholic church practice today: it was a most public affair, a very humbling experience; opening yourself up to the censure of others. At some point it was considered expedient to bring private confession to the priest: there is no example of this practice in the Bible
@jennernolast68584 жыл бұрын
No doubt confession is biblical. But I confess my sin only to God and to the person I have sinned against, not to a priest. Psalms 32:5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Hi Jenner Nolast, thank you for constantly watching and supporting these videos. I know we don’t always agree on topics, but I’m happy you’re here to have discussion on them! Catholicism is not Christianity. Mary is not to be worshiped. Sins are confessed to God. Jesus is the only way to God. Your religion condemns people to hell with works based salvation. We are saved by grace, for Jesus said whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Believe He is the son of God and that he rose again, call his name. Faith. Not works.

Its weird because im a Catholic yet i agree with every point you said. Well except the first one. ("Catholicism is not Christianity") Maybe YOU are a Catholic! 💕
@kevinsmith63993 жыл бұрын
@@greenergrass4060 it’s weird bc you are catholic. Your own denomination is an ancient pagan cult responsible for the deaths of 100s of 1000s of believers in Jesus Christ and millions of other. I do not follow denominations, I follow Jesus Christ. The Bible is my authority not man or a man. John 1:1. Even a Secular atheists can look into your religion and see it’s fruit. I was against your religion before I was even saved, let that think in. You are deceived.
@greenergrass40603 жыл бұрын
@@kevinsmith6399 let it be known that Jesus left us with no Bible, But a Church. the fact that we agree on so many things, and yet called me deceived, really made me question about your own salvation too... Irregardless, Jesus is indeed the only way to heaven. Nothing i cam ever do can earn my place in his kingdom. You and I are sinners , in a fallen world doing our best to follow him
