The Bible may not teach it, but a number of Church Fathers in the early Catholic church taught it and held to it, insisting on it even. Check out Michael C Patton's Six Myths about Sola Scriptura. One of the myths is that it is a Protestant idea which was never part of Catholic teaching.

Your faith and salvation is between you and God, but I would strongly urge you to read the teachings of Martin Luther with the understanding that he didn't want to break free from the Catholic Church, he wanted to reform it and do away with false teachings.

Mt 5:26 is part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. Mat. ch 5-7 deals with living in THIS life. There is nothing in the Sermon that deals with the afterlife. If you do not make friends with your opponent at law, you will very likely suffer the consequences of temporal judgment. Judgment in this life; not in the hereafter. The end result: purgatory is a man-made, and thus, false, doctrine.
