Did you know that in 1844 the Philippines and the islands of Micronesia (Guam, Palau, Northern Marianas, and the Federated States of Micronesia) "time traveled” straight into the future!? How did it happen without the world noticing!? It sounds like a conspiracy theory but it’s not, so let’s learn more!
In this video we will look at how the more than 8,000 islands of the Spanish East Indies (the Philippines and Micronesia) magically traveled in time straight into the future back in 1844. First we will learn what the International Date Line is and how this imaginary line from the North Pole to the South Pole affected the Philippines during the Spanish Colonial period. Next I will share what kinds of problems it created for the people of the islands and its surrounding countries. We will answer the question why was the Philippines on the wrong side of the world’s calendar for over 300 years. And finally, we will see how the governor general of the Philippines took the necessary steps to fix it but sadly the world did not pay attention until 50 years later! Let’s dig deeper into this untold chapter in our history!

About Kirby:
Kirby Pábalan-Táyag Aráullo is a renowned Filipino Culture Bearer and currently the National Coordinator for Culture and Heritage for NAFCON (National Alliance for Filipino Concerns). He is a Dátû and Lakan by blood, a direct descendant of the last indigenous Paramount Kings of Luzon (of both Lakandúlâ of Tondo and Rája Matandá of Maynílâ), and of the anti-colonial revolutionary Katipuneros who fought for the liberation of the Philippines from colonialism. Kirby's upbringing exposed him to the contradicting worlds of traditional politics and grassroots activism.
With a keen interest in varying fields (such as history, culture, government, and human rights) and a strong commitment to serve the community, Kirby studied in some of the world’s most prestigious universities, such as Harvard, UC Davis, and Université catholique de Louvain. Kirby is also the Co-Founder of the Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies and author of the book “Black Lives & Brown Freedom: Untold Histories of War, Solidarity, & Genocide.” He is a visiting professor at various colleges in the Philippines and a research fellow with Sínúpan Singsing, an institute for indigenous advocacy and the study of Kapampángan language, history, and culture.
Dátû Kirby is an educator who is well-rooted in his culture and passionate about his heritage; he strives to decolonize Philippine history and democratize Ethnic Studies through knowledge and play.

A new knowledge for me. Thank you, Sir. If I would go back or travel back in time I would like to go back from the time where the Philippines hasn't colonized yet. I like to see how they live in the past with our own culture, tradition and language. Philippines has different culture, vast and diverse but I want to know the unique and our very OWN culture and tradition.

I want to go back to the time when precolonial kingdoms were at a dispute. I want to share to them the power of working together to keep our culture unspoiled by Spaniards. We could've been muslims or whatever history drifted us.

Ferdinand Magellan served King Charles I of Spain in search of a westward route to the "Spice Islands" (modern Maluku Islands in Indonesia). On his voyage he arrived in Cebu, but he was killed in the battle of Mactan in April 27, 1521. His second in command, the Spaniard Juan Sebastián Elcano, continued the expedition and, on September 6, 1522, arrived at Seville, completing the circumnavigation. The full extent of the Earth was realized, since their voyage was 14,460 Spanish leagues (60,440 km or 37,560 mi). Upon returning they found their date was a day behind, even though they had faithfully maintained the ship's log. They lost one day because they traveled west during their circumnavigation of the globe, which is opposite to Earth's daily rotation. This caused great excitement at the time and a special delegation was sent to the Pope to explain the oddity to him. Please note that Magellan expedition travelled westward all the way around the world. Upon returning to Spain they found out that their date was a day behind. Thus the need for an International Date Line was realized.

I do not. First, there are other suyats that needs attention too, second, I've observed that the script today are used mainly for aesthetic and not for instructions and would likely be a handicap in our development and progression, if there is development tbh. I say the people's and the government's concern should be the problems that slows/hinders us to progress, and let the historians to continuously study and promote all of the suyats to their respective regions.

@@covertfeelings8330 I agree, Baybayin was not the ancient writing system of the entire archipelago. So, this will be seen by other ethnic groups as another "Tagalog aggression." Although, I would like those in power to standardize these writing systems even if it will not be the national writing system. I just don't like to see Baybayin, as a Tagalog, having so many conflicting rules about vowel cancellation, the distinction between /da/ and /ra/ atbp.

From March 16, 1521 until December 30, 1844 the Philippines was one day behind with the rest of Asia. Spanish and Portuguese explorers treated the Philippines as a part of their so called far west, so they conducted the Calendar date with the rest of Americas. And that error caused by the explorers put us at the wrong side of the International date line for 323 years, 9 months and 2 weeks.
