Sadly, I was informed by someone at KZbin that, thanks to their new content policy, this video would almost certainly get age restricted if I showed the weapons firing. I absolutely despise doing this, but I blurred the weapons to ensure the video stays up. It's very lame and dumb and you should definitely make fun of me for it but I'd rather the video remain public with the restrictions than taken down without them. Hopefully KZbin overturns this decision and I can remove the censoring but until then, I just want to keep the video up, sorry everyone.

Yeah, it can even feed/use both repro or original ammo. It's one hell of a "Gas-Blowback" airgun. It uses a weird system where a solid fuel, stored in a little brass ampule, is burned to generate the gas pressue, instead of using a more traditional gas reservoir (like for green gas/propane/CO2). It's very similar to the newer "Fuel" combustion nail guns or even a Ramset, same technology, except that on this airgun the little brass ampules have to be popped out of the system with each shot. But it's absolutely worth it, because it can fire a 150 grain pellet, at 2640fps, which is practically garunteed to result in ALL enemy players actually calling out their hits. It's almost too realistic. I mean, you could probably fight a literal war with that airgun. It really is a g'rand system.

The really disgusting part is they kept sabotaging the project well into my dad's service in Vietnam in 1969-1970. My dad was trained on the M14 in late 1968 and early 1969, then when shipped overseas, they handed him what seemed to him like a toy rifle that he knew nothing about. He was told it's self-cleaning, which is why they wouldn't be giving him a cleaning kit - to save weight, you see! Or so he was told. Then, one night on guard duty in a fox hole with 2 other guys, they get attacked by the VC - which was to be expected, because that happened every night until Nixon gave the green light to bomb the stockpiles a few hundred feet over the Cambodian boarder out in the middle of bumfucknowhere. However, this time, the VC came hard enough, and in great enough numbers that they were ordered to evacuate the base. Unfortunately for my dad and the guys with him, the VC was already overrunning their position, and due to the pitch darkness of night, most of the enemy was moving past them, but it meant they were cut off from retreat. So they held their ground, but my dad's rifle jammed - and from how he described it, I believe it was the jam where a spent case doesn't eject, but gets flipped around, and the gas key lodges into the neck of the case, and up in the charging handle's concave underside. This is a really difficult jam to clear even on a nice day at the range, with your tool bag, in daylight, and knowing exactly what's happening (happened to me one time, and it's a top tier jam). So to my dad, the rifle is now just a damn club. He had previously scored a 1911 and a couple mags off a dead officer - at the permission of another officer to keep it, as my dad was never issued a sidearm (normally worked in a command center to do artillery calculations, and they weren't allowed to have guns in there... for some reason, unless they were security). So anyway, at least he has SOMETHING, but it's just a shitty 1911 with 21 bullets between the 3 mags he had. Yeah, he was out of ammo fast. From there, he tried to use a dropped AK, but it was so different from anything he'd used, he only managed to fire the rounds still in it, and then had no idea how to change the mag, so again, another firearm useless to him. Thankfully, the other 2 guys' rifles kept running, but my dad was down to just the hunting knife he bought before deployment (was never issued a knife, either, told to buy one if he wanted one, so he did). The fighting continued until dawn, at which point the VC retreated as US infantry pushed to retake the lost ground. According to my dad, the fox hole was knee deep in blood. All 3 of them survived the night, likely by the grace of God, and the unwillingness to make their moms receive a coffin flag. It wasn't until my dad got back home in 1970 that he was mailed the Bronze Star for his courage on the battlefield. He tells me that's the only event that he knows he was in that could warrant such a medal. Figured one of the officers with the grunts who pushed the VC back saw the aftermath, and nominated him and the other two for the medal. As one could guess, my dad's opinion of the AR-15 platform was, "It's pure garbage that almost got me killed." Or, at least it was until last year, at age 78, I finally convinced him to shoot my modern AR-15 I built myself (without kits, btw, which I'm proud of, as it's also my first rifle, not just my first build). His arthritis is too much to work the action, but he managed the 4-5 lb trigger, and for a second, I saw a smile on his face as he dinged the plate at 400 yards first shot. He let loose a few more at the 350, 300, 250, and 200 yard plates, hitting each one. He then handed it to me, and said, "A lot nicer than the one I had." He then went on to tell me about that night, telling me if I'm able to build a rifle like that, I'm old enough to understand why he did what he did over there. He had never told us about any of it, not because it was too graphic, or whatever, but because he wanted to wait until my brothers and I were old and wise enough to understand the government isn't your friend, they aren't here to help, they are here to control you, to subjugate you, and to send you to die for their political and financial gain. He told us Vietnam wasn't about communism or the Russians, or democracy, it was because at the time, that's where France farmed the rubber tree sap used to make tires. The ruins upon which his base was built in Vietnam used to be a Michelin plantation. Rows upon rows of rubber trees, thousands of them. France is an American ally, and supplier of tires - which the military needs tires, and lots of them. He said there's no doubt in his mind we were there for one main reason, to fix France's fuckup, and make sure we kept access to rubber tree sap for tire production. I'm sure we were there for other reasons, too, but it made a ton of sense. Might be an interesting rabbit hole to look into.

More importantly, making sure everyone in the army had a muzzleloading rifle was more important than focusing on fancy new technology. Remember, at the start of the Civil War, neither side was really properly equipped for an all out war, so there were serious weapons shortages on both sides. The Union took the approach of standardizing as much as possible, while the South never really had many options and just took the least bad one; build factories and hope the war lasts long enough you can actually do something with them. They did actually produce some pretty nice rifles and carbines, but nowhere near enough of them

Honestly not surprised to hear that the Army Ordinance screwed things up so badly for their wounded pride. The Navy Ordinance, in the years between WW1 and WW2, created the Mark 14 torpedo, but refused to test it because they said it was so perfect, it never needed testing. And even after getting mountains of reports from Navy personnel about how garbage the torpedo was, the Navy Ordinance refused to change it until they were basically forced to at gunpoint by the top Navy Brass. They'd rather lose the war in the Pacific and get entire ships filled with sailors killed than admit that they screwed up their masterpiece. It's a huge scandal and Drachinifel did a really great video on it. Would love to see more videos like this, no matter what KZbin thinks.

Except it didn't actually happen the way Wendigoon describes it. I recommend watching IvanPrintsGuns' Wendigoon video where he explains the facts of the situation and how the army DID NOT sabotage anything, and if they wanted to, they easily could have, but they didn't. Ivan is an actual gunmaker, and one that is becoming fairly renowned because of his contributions to 3D printed firearms. He walks through the main points of the Wendigoon video piece by piece and shows the actual facts we have about the situation and shows how Wendigoon did not properly interpret the *data* and instead based his opinion off on a congressional hearing, where politicians are allowed to say basically whatever they want regardless of the facts.

One part of that story that is often overlooked is the price of a torpedo was similar to the price of a carrier launched airplane so testing a live torpedo is a costly venture. This is not a defense of not testing the Mk14. Just a note that is worth talking about

They used a contact fuse that was made for an earlier, slower torpedo, so when the mag-fuses didn't work (and didn't go off right after firing, which is theorized to have happened to some crews), the torp would basically crush the fuse before it could even fully function. This was confirmed when a navy crew performing testing (against the wishes of Ordinance Board) dropped a torpedo on it's nose (explosives removed obviously) out of water to see what the fuse was doing. Drachinifel has a great video on it; "The Mk14: Failure is like Onions."

As a gunsmith, I have grown to absolutely despite US Ordinance Corp precisely because every single decision they ever made got people killed. The Spanish-American war? Ordnance Corp snubbed the idea of clips to rapidly reload a rifle, even as soldiers ditched their issued Krag Joergensons in exchange for enemy rifles en masse. As in, 95% of the soldier's would ditch their issued kit. Fast forward to WW1, and the Thompson was presented to the military right as everyone realized that the war would revolve around trenches. Ordinance Corp would drag their heels, stalling every single meeting and test just because they thought the idea of an SMG was a waste of ammo, when one bullet can theoretically do the same job. The M1 Garand? That was originally supposed to use BAR magazines so that general infantry could support their machine gunners. Also, the BAR was not originally meant to take magazines. Early in development, the engineers wanted to use belts, but Ordinance Corp said no! It would "waste ammo!" This is a common mantra with Ordinance Corp. They were, and the military still is to an extent, obsessed with the idea of an army made up entirely of snipers. Now fast forward to pre-Vietnam. Armalite Rifle #10. It is, to this day, the only 30 caliber rifle that handles like an SMG. It is literally the "do it all" gun the military had been asking for, and it was snubbed because "a real rifle has wood and steel!"

The Navy bureau of ordinance was also single handedly responsible for the single worst scandal in US Naval history- the Mk. 14 torpedo which was never actually tested and when was actually deployed preformed so badly submarine captains would complain only to be basically told they don’t know how to actually use these torpedoes. It took an unreasonable amount of time for both air dropped and submarine launched torpedoes to be fixed where it actually do its job as a weapon of war and not just a angry metal fish who’s eyes been gouged out. Ah yes, a wonderful chance to pull out my favorite story of all time. My dad went to Vietnam in '69-70. He was a US Marine. In his training he was issued an M14, and he fell in love with it. When he got in country, they gave him an M16. He fucking hated it! My dad was not infantry, he was an engineer who drove trucks all over the country of Vietnam. He simply threw his issued M16 behind his driver seat and forgot about it. Due to the fact that he drove truck, he was pretty much always gone before morning muster. Until one day when he got held up waiting for his truck to get loaded. And, on this day the General in charge of his regiment was there conducting inspections. This is (basically) their actual conversation. General (walks up to my dad, takes one look at the rifle, takes it from my dad, tries the bolt. It's rusted shut): "MARINE! This is the sorriest excuse for a weapon I have ever seen, what do you have to say for yourself?" Dad: Sir, I don't believe in it sir, I think it's a piece of shit, sir" General: What do you mean you don't believe in it? This is the chosen rifle of the United States Marine Corps! What the hell are you going to do when Charlie sneaks up on you? Dad: Well sir, underneath my driver's seat I have a duffel, in that bag I have a grease gun, eleven mags of ammunition and ten grenades. I figure after that, Charlie can have me, sir. General (takes another look at the rifle, hands it back to my dad and simply responds): "Carry on, Marine."

When Gramps found out that his son was captured in 'Nam, he called the other Fathers in his neighborhood who also has sons captured, they called in favors and got their old gear, and left to VIETNAM TO RESCUE THEIR SONS. It took 2 years for them to get all their sons back, some were alive, some were dead, and a single pair of F&S had to be brought back to their Wife/Mother. Of coarse the rescued POW got sent home, but at least the Father came home with his Vietnamese wife. My Dad was in the Navy during Vietnam, and after he was met with spit and horrible words upon his homecoming he clung to what would become the VFW. While at the VFW with my Dad one day (I was 17, and under a contract with the Marine corps as an 0311) my Dad's best friend Gene who was an infantryman in Vietnam told me a chilling story of this negligence. This is the story: They were in the middle of a patrol when they came under fire. While under fire and returning fire, Gene said his good buddy (I forgot the Marines name, forgive me) came to him and asked where his barrel rod was as his rifle was jammed. Gene told him "I leaned it against that tree." Pointing to a tree a few feet away from him. The Marine got behind the tree and began attempting to unjam a swollen casing that was stuck in the chamber. Gene then recalls hearing a sharp crack followed by the smell of burning flesh. His friend had been shot directly through his nasal cavity and instantly killed. Gene said he ran over to assess the Marine and he was lifeless and brain matter fell out of his helmet. Gene has since passed away, but his story will forever be engrained into my mind. I'll never forget his facial expressions as he relived the story, and I'll always be thankful for entrusting me with such a painful moment from his combat deployment. Rest easy Gene, I have the gauntlet now.

I know I'm a little late, but I figured I might as well share. My grandfather served in Vietnam as a forward air controller and intelligence specialist. I remember him telling me of the time him and his buddies heard about bad weapon jams and GIs getting killed cause of bad ammo. That very same day he grabbed a few hundred round cases and went and blew a bunch of ammo to test. I assume this was the good stuff cause it ran fine. After they tested it, they went and stached what they had left, and each time they refilled their mags, they would go and swap whatever ammo they were given for the stuff they trusted. Pretty wild the stuff they got away with back then

My father was a soldier of the "peoples" army of Bulgaria back in 1973-75. He had often told me how, during his service, he had taken part in a Warsaw pact exercise. In it, his unit met a group of russian special forces, and they ended up drinking all night together. While at it one of the russians had started to brag how he had lost count of how many american soldiers heads he had blown up in Vietnam, while they were busy, "jacking off" their guns. Our soldiers had expressed disbelief in his story, and he angrily stormed back in his tent, only to come back out with a full scale armor made of american dog tags. Needless to say, dad and his comrades stayed away from the russians for the rest of the exercise.

Im 36 minutes in and have an opinion on the forward assist. I've heard this same thing many times where people say the forward assist is dumb, useless and call it a "jam enhancer" for reference I was in the Marine Corps as an aircraft mechanic. I never used the forward assist in bootcamp we kept our rifles spotless and we were in relatively clean conditions. During combat training they never gave us cleaning kits (ironic how this was 2018 and mirrors the issues in vietnam) we were mostly in dirty and dusty Conditions (camp pendelton) keep in mind we also did a good amount of training with blanks and blank firing adaptors which gum up the rifle a lot faster than normal live rounds. Anyways during that 30 day period of MCT I had to use the forward assist multiple times to keep my rifle running. A lot of them were during blank firing drills, but there were atleast a couple during live fire. Every time I had to use it the bolt went into battery and the rifle fired as usual. The forward assist never once caused a jam for me. My 2 cents.

Minor point on the ball powder: chamber pressure wasn’t excessive, gas port pressure was. If the problem was excessive chamber pressure it would have gone undetected essentially for years before the bolts started shearing lugs from excessive wear. The AR system is actually really good at containing pressure, which is why 5.56 runs at 62kpsi when the 223 was developed around 55kpsi. The guns can take extra pressure all day. The slow burning ball powder actually struggles to reach full pressure which is why they had to overload it so much to meet specifications. This slower powder holds pressure longer which is why when it reaches the gas port it had over 10kpsi more than the faster burning extruded powder. The real negligence wasn’t using the ball powder, which would have been a sound decision if looked at in isolation (they just successfully used this powder in two other gas operated rifle platforms and had no problems with it there, plus they already had vast stores of it). The negligence was the response to it. When they saw that it was FAR too slow burning for their use, it would have been a trivial process to add/blend the powder into a faster burning alternative and use it then. Many modern propellants use this technique, and you can get some really good performance out of it, and consume less powder per cartridge in the process. That would have required additional contracting, procurement, and testing which is all a hassle so it was just easier to run trials with existing fast powders and issue the slow stuff. The final blow, in my mind at least, is that you could have absolutely used those large quantities of ball powders in 5.56 if you relegated it to lots of ammo designated as training munitions. Just burn up all that powder on ammo you were going to shoot in controlled environments anyways, as well as in 7.62 platforms that you would keep like the m60. It’s just really insulting that there were SO MANY ways that this could have been handled intelligently but they almost pathologically picked the worst option every single time.

5.56Nato and .223Rem run at basically the same max pressure. The myth that 5.56 is significantly higher pressure is a result of Nato and SAAMI using different testing procedures and providing their results in different units of measurement. The only actual difference between the two is the throat and lead angle specs in the chamber
@jacobackley5024 ай бұрын
@@Man_Emperor_of_Mankind That’s only half true. In terms of the barrels, the leade is the only difference. In terms of ammunition, only the length of max ogive to case head is different. By specification, 223 is produced at a SAAMI max of 55kpsi. Numerous loads for the military including m855A1 and MK262 clock in at 62kpsi. These loads are somewhat notorious for their excessive pressure, and lots of folks on forums like arfcom spend time duplicating the loads and noting how far above max loads they are. People using Oehler m43s have verified these numbers as well.

In defense of the forward assist, it's not TOOOOTALLY useless. There is one very niche scenario where it's useful. While nothing should ever be pushed into a chamber which won't freely slide in, when you are in a non-permissive environment and need to chamber a round as quietly as humanly possible before shots start being fired (for example, when switching from subsonic rounds to supersonic rounds), the FA allows you to ride the charging handle forward slowly and THEN tap the forward assist to guarantee the bolt is fully seated forward. This scenario applies to only about 0.01% of us, and I'm probably mincing words here, but it's not a totally terrible part of the receiver when it does not induce any malfunctions all on its own.
@JustJakenStuff4 ай бұрын
its only bad because it gave people a false sense of security over clearing a jam. initially people thought it was gonna clear their jam no matter what. as wendigoon states. and when its being used in any other situation, other than the one u just described, forcing the bolt closed and firing, in this case, would more than likely result in a catestrophic malfunction. so unless the soilders were directly advised of what u just said, as the only real situation you'd use it. it more than likely just got people killed via pure misunderstanding of the mechanism of the reciever.
@flinchfu4 ай бұрын
Some ARs won't engage the extractor with the forward assist if you drop a round in and gently ride the bolt behind it, but mine will. So I engage the extractor with the forward assist with a simple thumb push, brass check and good to go.

As an active duty soldier, I will actually defend the Forward Assist. There are times (ESPECIALLY in the Middle East) that dirt and dust is so fine that it will get into the weapon system and prevent the bolt from closing all the way, and you don't have time to strip and clean the weapon (on guard, convoy, nonpermissable environment, etc) but you need to be able to close the bolt. I was on guard overseas during a sandstorm and had a group of suspicious individuals come up and so had to rack my weapon and low and behold the dust prevented the bolt from closing all the way (was mostly chambered but not locked) so instead of recycling which would dump a round and probably have the bolt not engage all the way, I pressed the Forward Assist and got it to lock and go I to battery. It's 4 extra pieces that literally do not effect the cycle of the weapon unless directly used as it fully just sits out of the way and I fully am still on the side of Ordinance Dept. to have a manual way of putting the weapon into battery should it fail
@chestersnapdragonmcphistic5794 ай бұрын
That's really the best use for the forward assist. For when a round is chambered, but the bolt isn't in battery. You really only need the last 2 or 3 forward assist serrations in the bolt carrier.

Unfortunately for my experience in the Marines I just watched people jam stove pipes into oblivion that required leatherman's screwdrivers to knock the casings out. If you need to push the bolt forward there is a thumb cut out on the side of the bolt for that reason. Unfortunately for your situation it's why did they have you not in condition one while on a guard post. So that's probably just retarded ROE
