Some areas in Canada had a “bounty” on fish ducks (Mergansers) to protect salmon and trout fry from their restless predation as a flock of these ducks could clean out 90% of the fish in a stream in one or two days.

I've been hearing that story line for decades. Fact of the matter is. These Mergansers have been here, with the abundance of Salmon, Trout, and Steelhead, for thousands of years. The decline of the fish has only occurred with one common denominator. ( Progress). The fish duck lie is one perpetrated by the fly fishing and commercial fishing industries. It's a ( If we can't have it. Neither can the ducks attitude).

I have this species in a small river near my home. Sometimes I find them as road kill on a bridge they fly over. I have taken them home to see what fish are in their crop. Different species of fish but never larger than your hand...They seem to focus on what's the most common fish in a system

Those would be a North American Mergansers. They will eat everything. Just like hogs.

We can hunt mergansers but most people don’t as they taste like fish and liver combined, but everyone wants a hooded merganser ! Too get stuffed for their man cave !
