Initial investigation into the loss of control on Qantas Flight 72 reveals a disturbing theory: the plane's fly-by-wire system may have sent rogue commands to the flight control surface.

This is what happens when a fly by wire Aircraft flighs near a 1 megawhatt ERP 19.2khz VLF transmitter, same as Quantas 71. Faults are related to wiring lenghs, resonance at 19.2khz in any long wire..hard to predict what will happen, and very difficult to test on the ground. The real questions are, 1) why was the fly by wire system not more tollerent of corrupt data? 2) Why the phony "we tried looking at interference but could not reproduce fault" Like, did they really have a 1MW VLF generator to play with? 3)Did they try flying a plane over the transmitter to check BER (bit error rate) on the Fly by wire busses?

Thank you all for your supportive comments towards the crew of QF72. It was a science fiction scenario that became a reality; confused computers using automation to harm rather than protect our aircraft, crew and passengers. I see there are many technical questions here and I recommend you read the book I have written on this flight entitled, "No Man's Land". I talk in depth about the flight, what went wrong, what went right, the heroic actions of the passengers and crew, and the investigation into the causes of the accident. I was hoping that our event would be the last accident involving bad automation, but the recent 737 MAX accidents have indicated that we have a long way to go. Sadly, there are many similarities in these tragic aviation events. Thank you for your continued support. Captain Sullivan

When the pilot dies in an air accident, passengers applaud the Captain as Hero telling that he gave his life to save his passengers, no one cares the serious injury then. For a few (or may be many) passengers with injury, it's difficult for them to digest seeing the Captain coming out of the cockpit without physical injury even after such a disaster happened in the cabin. They were unable to fathom out the mental injury hiding inside the Captain's unhurt body. I would rather prefer to live with an injured body than plunging into the deep Indian Ocean. Bravo & salute to the Captain. Always a Fighter.

In most cases, the computer is better due to its faster reaction time and all of the safety systems integrated. In Airbus' case, the FBW system has saved many lives over the years. A crash due to FBW makes it seem like it is dangerous until you consider that Boeing aircraft without automated systems have crashed more. In some cases, a Boeing crashes in a situation that an Airbus could have remedied. BTW, Airbus has a better safety record. The A350 and A380 have had a total of 0 fatal accidents, whereas both the A330 and A340 have had only a couple of fatal accidents combined. Compare that to Boeing's safety record. Fully automated planes have much better safety records when implemented correctly, like on the Airbus. In this case, it perplexes me as to why the computer didn't detect the erroneous data as it should.

It really bothers me that, ultimately, they weren't able to determine what caused the flight computer to go berserk. It's kinda spooky.

Fly by wire problems can be traced on its INU-Inertial Navigation Unit. Its the culprit of lots of crashes on first versions of a combat aircraft that pioneered the Fly By Wire technology.... The F-16. This technology also found its way in a company called Magnetti Marelli. Suceeded in perfecting it where an American Submarine maker General Dynamics who also build the F-16 fails. It took the lives of 20 of its pilots before General Dynamics finally perfected it. Its problems was discovered on its wiring design, and solved it by using fiber optics, using lights instead of electrical impulses to transmit data faster from its sensors to the computer. But in the case of the airliners, the sensor is also the cause of the crash

Otherwise the 737 Max button must be always off

Quantas 71 and 72 experienced data errors in their fly-by-wire systems when flying close to the SAME 1Mw VLF transmitter, these errors have never been reported on any other Airbus anywhere,so the chances of these incidents NOT being related to high VLF RF levels is statistically unlikly. NOTE these errors were far more widespread than just AOA data being mis-labled, but all other systems contunued to work anyway, the only system caught out was the anti-stall because just like MAX 8,the data was un-verified.Luckily, they didn't have MCAS overiding their inputs and were able to correct the flight path, albeit a bit late as the auto-systems react faster than the poor PF.

Airbus is, almost from day 1, giving the on-board computers far to much authority! That's insane. By doing this, pilots will in the longer term, 'loose' their ability to actually fly the plane, and/or the ability to deal with problems, concerning the behaviour of the aircraft. They are often even blocked by the computer to take over control!!

You don’t know anything about Airbus aircraft do you? You can disable the protections if you know how to and turning off the faulty ADIRU would have immediately rectified the problem

So now that they have no idea about why a plane could suddenly pull its nose up while its nose is really low, they go ask the manufacturers? Smart.

@@ryanvess6162 The ATSB concluded that while it cannot be proven since it can't be replicated in a controlled environment, the likely explanation is that the ADIRU unit was manufactured in a way that left it susceptible to data corruption due to cosmic rays.

The plane thought it was flying nose up so it "corrected itself", and went in a nose dive. The computer rejected pilot inputs, they probably had to reboot the system

Remember folks - the FIRST EVER public flight of a "fly by wire" plane, an Airbus in France at an airshow... Crashed. The video is on KZbin and the cover up was absolutely criminal.

If I remember correctly, that was due to the fact that the pilots were trying to show off the stall protection... But they left the landing gear down... And as a result the aircraft thought the pilots were trying to land, so the stall protection didn't activate and the aircraft stalled while basically being "on the deck" to borrow a navy term.

It's why automation is so dangerous. I'd rather give pilots the control then a computer. A computer is great and will prevent minor incidents and tail strikes. But i would rather a captain make a choice and choose a tail strike for instance and save the passengers rather then "save the aircraft". Humans have all the facts, computers just have what they are programmed to see and act on. But they can't feel. Considering the rate of pilots killing passengers I would take that risk over any better computers. Even if that means twice as many more psyc evals, i think captains would take that with the increased control of their birds.
