His Top Gun training saved the lives of everyone on that plane. Instead of fighting the stick, his military training told him to release it (while civilian pilot training does not.) Thankfully, it worked and the plane leveled off. As they tried to make an emergency landing, the plane suddenly dived again, but Capt. Sullivan was again able to regain control of the plane and managed to safely land, although there were severe trauma injuries to several passengers and crew who hadn't been strapped in.

In Conclusion: This Plane was A330 using first time “Fly-by-wire” technology, similar technology used in Boeing 737 MAX. In this, Sensors were giving wrong input to Computer about Nose Pitch & speed, so Computer thinks its Stall and make Plane Nose Down. In the end, Pilot saved the Airplane, made an emergency landing, and luckily No one died.

"No Man's Land" is the true story of the QF72 accident. It was released in June 2019 and this documentary shows the people side of this accident. Confused computer systems and automation on an Airbus A330 injured 119 passengers and crew. Over millions of views here and elsewhere...incredible! The survivors of the QF72 appreciate your interest and support, and I hope the warnings I voice in the book and in the documentary are heeded by those in commercial aviation, and designers of automated systems. Exotic systems create exotic failures. This is one of them. Thank you for all the great comments, from all of us on the QF72.

I was on a trip to Malaysia once and my plane had a bad stall and dropped down pretty quickly to the point I felt like my insides were shaking. everyone started freaking out, But it lasted for just a few seconds before the pilot announced it was safe again. So...here's my explanasion, QF72 has an "auto-safety" feature but something went wrong, the auto-safety feature thought the airplane was going straight vertically up, so it auto "corrected" the plane, keep in mind the plane was going straight not vertically up. It sended the airplane vertically down, now the plane is going vertically down while the auto correct thinks its going straight. However the pilot was an F-14 pilot during The Cold War, one of his trainings for "loss of control" he has been told to neuturalize all controls...It worked! QF72 regained controls and landed safely with only a couple of injuries. By the way, sorry for any bad english, im from Croatia and don't know english extremely well.

Interestingly enough, QF72 experienced this issue when flying near H.Holt Naval Comms station. the ATSB said that it was unlikely the issue was caused by transmissions from the station. Then QF71 had a similar issue with AP disconnect and ADIRU issues in the same area a few months later. Computer faults involving data word corruption were blamed for both instances, but nothing conclusive was confirmed as to what actually caused the corruption to occur.

He took part in a pilot exchange with the Royal Australian Air Force, fell in love with an Aussie gal while in Australia, left the service to marry her and took up a job flying for Qantas. Now he's famous for cajoling this possessed plane to the ground with no lives lost, though plenty of people were badly injured by the violence of those dives. The full story's worth finding!
