The walkman!!! Lol good memories... I work at a museum & the machine used to digitize old cassettes looks exactly like a walkman. Our teen volunteer was over the moon to get to live out a "if I was born in olden times" fantasy! I was mortally offended, I'm only 53 lol but he was living his best life transferring old homesteader interviews to the computer 😂

Brilliant! 😂 I have a 16 year old and, the other day, we were visiting relatives. There were a variety of adults in the room with him, but he was the only person under 35. We were talking about Christmas and my son was being asked what gifts he'd like. He replied that he would very much like a new music album by an artist he enjoys, so his uncle asked him what format he'd like it in (thinking of the different types of digital music). He responded by asking for a CD, because it was "retro". Every adult in the room erupted into profanity... 😂 He knew what he was doing, judging by the little sly grin as he said the offending word, and thought the reaction was hilarious! 😂 Good job we love him! 😉💕

@fromspace77 ай бұрын
in Swedish: springa runt means running around (I think that's what rumspringa means)

Amish are not of swedish origin though. I guess the original word was "rumspringer" and the last 2 letters got lost in translation @@fromspace7

In Swabian German, which is relatively close to the original language of the Amish, springen (schbringa) means both to jump and to run. (He)rumspringen is to jump or run around, but jumping is the predominant meaning.
@laraista7 ай бұрын
@@daria9000Swedish is, such as German and English, a Germanic language. The example from fromspace7, illustrates this common Germanic language root. I like how Lizzie prononces the word as "herumspringe", obviously stemming from "herumspringen" in German, meaning "running around". In Swiss German the word would be "umespringe".

Hi Lizzie! I was wondering about something... What was leaving the Amish like from a spiritual aspect? I know that the Swartzentruber church often secludes certain Biblical truths. But they do teach about Jesus's death on the cross, saving blood, and resurrection right? Anyway, I suppose what I am wondering is if you actually believed what you were saying when you got baptized. I know family, and social, pressures are why you joined the church. Would you still say you are a Christian? Or did you become one? One hears a lot of stories about people only become Christians after leaving the Amish. Your channel is such a fascinating insight into Swartzentruber culture.

I don't know what kind of order they are, but the Amish who run the PA Dutch Farmer's Market in Kingston NJ, let their kids wear regular clothes during the week, while working at the store. I think they're around 14 or so, at the youngest. I think they're the more liberal ones from Lancaster PA.

Your description of Rumspringa is really interesting. I had once heard an honestly really hilarious story about a few Amish kids on their Rumspringa who supposedly attended Burning Man (a 9 day art festival held in the middle of the desert for those not familiar. It's basically a nine day party with wild art installations and really interesting people!). As if Amish kids attending Burning Man wasn't humorous enough, as the story goes, things got even more interesting, as my friend told it, when Temple of Atonement, the BDSM art instalment/dungeon that used to be a regular at Burning Man, actually summoned the completely unsuspecting Amish to the Temple to, shall we say, partake in the Temple's gifts...🤣 Freaking hilarious story to be sure, but now with the way you're describing Rumspringa, I'm thinking it never actually happened. Which, honestly, is a bit of a bummer to me, because it would be absolutely hilarious if it did! 🤣
@lizzieenswellness7 ай бұрын
It is possible it happened for them as some sects allow that.

If I'm not mistaken, what happens in rumspringe stays in rumspringe because you're not technically part of the church yet. There's a process after rumspringe, similar to Confirmation in Catholicism, where you join the church as a consenting adult. At that point, no Burning Man :-)
@ferretyluv7 ай бұрын
That’s actually really interesting. I always thought the whole point of Rumspringa was to hold true to the whole anabaptist thing, where you have to choose to join the Amish faith with a baptism after a Rumspringa and seeing the English world. There was a documentary on it that I watched in high school.
@S.Isaac345 ай бұрын
In the area I once lived in Ohio, our new leader groups did not allow Rumspringa. The Swartzentrubers were known as the party Amish and would drive by our homes in their buggies with their boomboxes and Twisted Teas. The old orders would usually just get a huge diesel tinted truck for a few years then sell it when they decide to get married and have to join the church to do so.
@Talkbookishwithme7 ай бұрын
They don't give you all the option to do rumspringa because they don't want you all to get a taste of the outside world so you all can't decide to leave amish if you don't experience the outside world is what they're thinking but they're also not thinking if you all grow up and decide you wanna leave you all are gonna do it anyway even if you don't get to do rumspringa.

This is obviously a very different thing from being raised Amish, but I have an ex-husband who would get mad at me for listening to one of my favorite bands after he found out I thought the guitarist was attractive. So I used to have to sneak around and listen to that band in private, lol. I also ran away in a sense, and when I finally got to go see that band live as a single woman, it felt just as freeing as it felt for you listening to music without having to sneak around.

Here’s a question- you guys weren’t allowed weren’t allowed to dance, but were you allowed to sing? In Orthodox Judaism theres a law called Kol Isha where women are prohibited from singing in public. For a man to hear a woman’s voice is on the same level as seeing her naked. I know the Amish are into next-level modesty, so I’m curious if they have anything like that.

It’s horrible to realize you would’ve been kidnapped to stay there. Forcing someone to stay somewhere is kidnapping. I’m so glad you got out and are able to have all the freedoms as a woman. I feel for all the women in these cults. I don’t know whether or not you consider it a cult but here is a simple Definition: a small religious group that is not part of a larger and more accepted religion and that has beliefs regarded by many people as extreme or dangerous. The lack of education especially for women and their relegation to cooking and bearing so many children gives me shudders. In the 1800s women were considered unable to have a certain level of intelligence that would make them suitable to education or to be doctors. The fact that so many women live that way today makes me so angry.

I have two questions for you: Q1: What was the root of the initial spit (..division that occurred among the Amish of Holmes County, Ohio, in the years 1913-1917)? Q2: Is the diagram in the article below reflect the restrictions correctly? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swartzentruber_Amish Thank you for very educational and interesting insights into the live of Amish!
@lizzieenswellness7 ай бұрын
Yes that article is pretty accurate. the only thing not accurate is that the Swartzentruber yards are unkept. We had one oof the cleanest farms you could find in the community because my parents cared about cleanliness. :) The root of the initial split I am not sure. My guess is some wanted to go more modern and others didn't. Several splits happened when I was still there.
