I apologize for those folks in my age bracket who haven't represented us well! Age and wisdom have only a slightly positive correlation, unfortunately. One of my favorite movies of all time is "Harvey", with Jimmy Stewart. His character is a super-friendly guy named Elwood P. Dowd, whose drinking buddy is an invisible 6-ft tall rabbit. The way he treats people is exemplary....you can't watch the movie and not want to be more like Elwood.....the world would be a better place!! One of Elwood's soliloquies, available on YT: "Years ago, my mother used to say to me, 'Elwood, in this world you need to be oh so smart, or oh so pleasant.' Well, for years, I was smart. I recommend pleasant." (great OLD movie!)

I just have to giggle about what people think that kick starter is actually for and what it is really capable of with fuel injection. If your battery goes dead with fuel injection you can kick that kick starter till eternity and that bike will never start! The kick start only works with carburetors when the battery goes dead and you would also need a magneto stator to generate electricity for the ignition which way back on the original cub or trail they had points and condensor for the spark. Everything was mechanical then. There is a mountain of videos that I have watched that all said the same thing about the kick start being for when the battery goes dead but the reality is with electronic ignition and fuel injection the kick start is just a novelty and it really only works on this bike when the battery has a charge in it. That all being said, this is still a great bike and I would still love to own one of them if I had a need for one. 😁

Kick starts and heel shifter's are great in the main countries in Asia where the Trail 125 will be sold, where you need a robust bike that can handle poor/no maintenance, lack of spares; and you'll be riding in bare feet, flip flops or light shoes. The heel shifter doesn't damage your footwear (or feet) :-).

I was told that the many business men/women who ride these bikes back and forth to work in Japan and Asia had requested this ‘heel/toe shift’ feature, and the heel shifter is preferred so they don’t scuff up the toes of their dress shoes while up shifting. This feature was integrated for this very reason on the early “ Super Cub “ models and carried over throughout the years and is still a very functional standard feature as seen here . This was long before there were the modern day scooters that have automatic / clutch less transmission and a deck board / plate in lieu of foot pegs for resting your feet . I love these bikes ! Trying to justify the need for one in my own mind , and wanting the new CRF300L too !
@seankearney69153 жыл бұрын
I believe that to me the case. The originals had the toe end the same as the heel end too. Not sure about scuffing shoes lol! Have you seen how many of these are ridden in flip flops. A few of us weren't allowed motorbikes as teenagers and got the original C50/70/90s as hand me downs and just swapped out the gearlever for a motorbike one. We found if you ride them in boots you wanted to rotate the gear lever clockwise a spline or two then it was impossible to press down with your heel anyway. My dad used to use his toe on the back half for upshifts anyway and was miffed when I swapped the lever out.
@John5XR3 жыл бұрын
Great comments guys! That's an interesting thought about the heel shifter, and makes sense. I actually love it and use it on almost every upshift despite thinking I'd never use it. It's one of those things you never knew you'd need or use until you actually have it.

My first bike was a CT 90 with the old two speed gear box. I beat the snot out of that bike for many years and just could not break it. After a while it develop an oil leak, and as a dumb a** kid I forgot to put oil in it one day. It locked up, I just added a Qt. of oil and it started right back up. When I went to a bigger bike I sold it to a guy that fixed the oil leak and drove it everyday to go to work for over 5 years and only changed the tires, oil, air filter. I had no money for gas so I would go around to the gas stations after they closed and drain the gas out of the hoses and I'd be good for another week. :)

I just ordered mine up here in Québec. Our farmer father had bougt a CT90 back in 1970 for one of my brothers. It looked almost identical to this 125 model. I really like the style of the Honda Cub but the disappointment for the Super Cub 125 is that it does not have the kick start like the Honda Trail 125 and Honda Wave 125 and the other thing I do not like about the Super Cub 125 is the electric immobiliser on the Honda Cub 125; I would prefer a normal key.

I love this bike! it's just... The coolest kind of cool. Would it make sense for someone who plans to only ever drive is on pavement though? I'm considering it as my first motorcycle.
@John5XR3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I wouldn’t say it’s something the bike needs in stock form, especially if you’re staying on pavement. If adding power, climbing steep hills at slower speeds, or practicing wheelies, stiffer clutch springs will help make the bike “pop” a little better. The stock clutch will feel soft when trying to do these things.

Depends on where your pavement riding is and how long the journeys are. My first bike was an early C90 46 years ago. To me the gears are better than having a twist and go. In the UK they were classed as a full motorbike in those days and I did my test on one. I don't like running things flat out so if you only need 45mph I would say they are a great introduction. I dare say given their popularity they make financial sense too as I bet they are easy to resell. Though I am sure you would be tempted to keep a first bike and just get a bigger one later if you wanted to do serious highway mileage. I wrote to Honda to see if they would come to the UK but just got a bland reply from their customer services. "We are pleased to learn of you interest in our products. Currently, there is no official information stating whether the Honda CT125 will become part of the UK range. As soon as we have any details about upcoming models, we publish them on the "Coming Soon" section of our website." Shame and I cant see why as we get the other 3, Super Cub, Monkey and Grom and I think the CT125 is cooler and more useable. Grom and Monkey too small, bigger wheels more comfortable on bumps, Cub only a drum rear brake. CT125 is a no brainer and you can stick some stuff on the back easier than you can with a CB125. I even bet later on you could pop a Grom engine in and have the clutch.

Too bad that they did not put the High / Low transmission on it like the CT90 and CT110.
@John5XR3 жыл бұрын
That is probably the biggest gripe amongst those who had or have the old bikes. While it would have been clever, I’m not surprised Honda just used their already available Grom/Monkey/Super Cub engine and drivetrain package to quickly produce another cool retro throwback bike.

The shifter allows rider to wear nice suede, leather or any other material or color shoes which we need to avoid having a stain or mark on the toes area. However i dont usually use my heel but instead use balls of my foot to engage higher gear for the back pedal. You dont get tired, plus heel shifter are not for everyone cos it will be akward. Only those cubs model from the 3 major manufacturer from yamaha, honda and suzuki got these toe/heel shifter design. 😘😘😘😘😘

Great bike, too bad they didn’t do the auxiliary gas can like on my CT110. It saved me twice.
@John5XR Жыл бұрын
Man this thing will go for over 100 miles on a tank though, you’d have to be going pretty far to need an aux tank!
@kd8opi Жыл бұрын
@@John5XR The Ct110 did close to that, it’s not unusual for small motorcycles to get 80+ mpg. The auxiliary tank was a cool feature, especially as the ct90’s and 110’s did not have fuel gauges, but a petcock that you flipped from “normal “ to reserve. Basically, with the petcock in the normal position, the gravity fed carb would sip gas from the end of a little metal straw in the tank that stuck up high enough from the bottom to drain 80% of the tank. If you started to sputter and run out of fuel, you flipped the petcock to open a hole in the side of the straw near the bottom of the tank to give yourself those that last precious quart of gas to get you back. The auxiliary tank was super cool, and let you keep an extra 30 miles of gas incase the reserve wasn’t enough, or (like what happened to me) when you forgot to switch the petcock from reserve back to normal, and when you started sputtering when your gas got low, you were out brother. The new trail 125 is a cool bike, don’t get me wrong, and it has a fuel gauge. But even today there are videos on KZbin of people riding them taking an MSR fuel bottle with them on long rides out west. One other thing, the original 110’s and 90’s also had dual transmissions. You mostly kept it in “high”, but the torque on the low gears was nuts and could take you off-road and up steep hills amazingly well, probably better than the trail 125 today (but I haven’t compared them…yet). I just wish Honda would have kept either of those two truly unique features on the new 125 trail. The old ct-110’s weren’t imported to the US after 1986, but they were sold to Australia/NZ for their postal service and to private citizens until 2013 - almost another 30 years! So, it wasn’t like these features were ancient history when the trail 125’s came back. Oh well, I guess I’m glad I’ve got my 110.

Great video brother. I'll bet there are plenty of actual owners of that bike that didn't know most or all of that stuff. I'd love to have one myself. Currently riding a 1996 Kaw Vulcan 1500 Classic with a one of a kind paint job. I'll probably never part with it. These Honda's are kinda expensive. I'm trying to convince myself it's worth to me would be worth the price. God Bless PS I use the back part of my shifter all the time. Sometimes hard to get a thick boot under the shifter. Plus it scuffs up the toe of your boot. After using my back shifter it would be uncomfortable to be with out one. A great feature.

The tool kit does NOT include a Phillips screwdruver bit. That cross hatched driver is a Japan Industrial Standard (JIS) bit. Similar, not the same. Do not use Phillips bits on the bike, but JIS drivers work well on PHillips screws without much damage to the screw heads.

The helmet tether.. I have an old yamaha scooter with a similar tether, are you sure you are not supposed to loop the tether through the helpmet metal loop, then attache the tether under the seat by the 2 metal tether loops? That way a theif would not be able to take the helmet off. This is how it works on my yamaha scoot.
