DID YOU KNOW - There are two public holidays’ coming your way in May?? That can only mean one thing - Another long weekend!!!
But before you book your next Gondwana adventure to Chobe River Camp, Damara Mopane Lodge or the Namib Desert Lodge, we want to take the time to remember the significant reason for this long weekend.
On the 1st of May, we commemorate International Workers Day. Also known as May Day or Labor Day, this international public holiday serves to pay homage to the working class of our nation.
And on the 4th of May, we remember the lives lost on Cassinga Day. In 1978, approximately 400 paratroopers with the South African Air Force were dropped near the town of Cassinga in Angola, where it was believed a Namibian refugee camp existed. Bombs were dropped on the South West Africa People’s Organization’s refugee camp as well as the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia’s military base. The paratroopers and other ground forces attacked after the bombings, killing more than 600 people, mostly women and children.
The United Nations condemned the attack, saying it was both “criminal in legal terms and savage in moral terms.” The government claimed it was a retaliatory raid against small strikes made by the South West African People’s Organization. The battle weakened the reputation of the South African government and paved the way for Namibia to gain independence on 21 March 1990.
We believe that it is important to commemorate this day in order to pay homage to those who sacrificed their lives. So that we and future generations can live in peace.

Best armed refugees ever seen

Not really accurate, is it Gondwana? Mostly woman and children by ground forces? Airstrikes caused almost all casualties, and that paints a different picture than troops running around, killing innocent unarmed people. It is a definitive sad peace of Namibian history, but with only SANDF and TRC giving some official accounts of the raid, with SWAPO, ANGOLA and CUBA not disclosing all or any official documents, there is still much to unravel in future. Still, God bless the innocent on that day.
