Tuvan Throat Singing Basics with Jerry Walsh

This video is an introduction to the three fundamental styles of Tuvan throat singing: Kargyraa, Khoomei, and Sygyt. Examples and demonstration of techniques are provided.

Xorekteer (Throat singing from the chest)
Generate a small bubbling sensation in your larynx by gently toning the phrase "Ahhh" and feel where the bubbling is strongest. This bubbling is created by your vocal cords/folds moving in your larynx. This is the region the throat that needs to be constricted.
Now, sing the phrase "Ahhh" and squeeze the region of the throat (the larynx) that was creating the bubbling sound in the previous exercise. When you squeeze the larynx while simultaneously singing, it creates the xorekteer voice.
Khoomei
Generate the Xorekteer voice. Now, bring the lips and mouth into the shape of a small circular opening to create a chamber for the sound to resonate in. This proper reshaping of the mouth creates the Khoomei style.
Sygyt
While still practicing Khoomei, you can now bring the tongue to the top of the jaw, filtering the sound out through a small opening wherever you feel comfortable, creating the high whistle of Sygyt.

Begin with the mouth closed for back pressure. Begin by clearing the throat with a squeeze of the larynx. Almost like making the tone "Hmmm". When you feel the vibration of the throat coming on, open the mouth and experiment with different vowel sounds.

Actually, the point is that his technique is quite off. What he is doing is not using larunx but compressing his vocal cords and stopping the air from coming out. That forces the cords to open periodically to let the air out. Using this technique may cause serious problems with voice, and apparently some people can injure their vocal cords (depends on the width of the cords, that is genetically difined). So, if you really want to learn throat singing I'll suggest that you go to a vocal coach that can teach you things like screaming. That is basically the same technique, but used in a slightly different way. When you really know how to use your rima vestibuli it won't be a problem anymore to figure out throat singing.

@Zaher Beaini I think he's straining the right muscles but also straining extra muscles in his neck and face which is constricting the bloodflow. Source: I'm a medical massage therapist and I study muscles and my vocal teacher gets onto me about doing this all the time. If what you said was true then just holding your breath would turn your face red, which it typically doesn't. He's still trying too hard, it's not effortless for him yet - he's still getting close enough to teach it and knows a lot more than most teachers about this. He's effectively one step ahead of the class on this one - still struggling at times to perform. It's hard! He's 100% straining too many muscles - even though his sound is right - his technique is concerning and my vocal teacher would stop him and have him relax his neck and turn his head back and forth slowly while doing this. Furthermore, you can actually hear his tension in the voice sometimes. His technique is far from perfect. He would benefit from some time with a vocal teacher who focuses on posture/positioning/tension. He's also forcing the air with too much tension instead of letting it flow out, so it's also his chest cavity with too much tension going on. Unless you've studied muscles professionally or are a vocal teacher I doubt you'd notice. It's clear to me he's stressing out his intercostals a bit much because they move so much on the onset of his sound... His shoulders and posture are also too far forward. I could literally write a paper on how his posture is off because it's my weakness. Postural foundation is key to voice. Just shifting a couple things is the difference between resonance and effortlessness and straining for me, so I assume the same applies for everyone else.

I’ve been doing Death Metal vocals since quite sometime now and many people often think that metal and throat singing are the same techniques but it’s not quite so. Death metal growls and screams focus on the diaphragm instead of the chest and their no stress on the throat. I used to make these similar sounds when I was a really little kid. I totally forgot about it until I started coming across people doing it on KZbin. Then I was introduced to the real throat singing. Well done. Great description and demonstration. I have been an overtone singer for 30 years and and a throat singer for only 20. That was because it needed some adaption from the standard approach due to me being a bass baritone. There are two things I can add. The last technique is singing two different pitches with the voice box. We usually lead with membrane and muscle follows in sympathetic vibration, but with throat singing, we lead with muscle and membrane follows. This disconnection between the two is the hardest to master. The other feature is that tightening the singing muscle turns the vocal system from a pipe into a cylinder. In other words, a soft system within the tube becomes a hard surface from which sound emerges. This activates the resonant systems of mouth, throat, and the combination of mouth and throat. I was a didgeridoo player before I became an overtone singer and choir/performance conductor. I was able to double my vocal range. Eventually, I realised that as a didgeridoo player, I had the skills to advance to brass and bought a euphonium. I then invented the bass bugle which is a compact didgeridoo in the key of C where I can play any tune and often in three different keys. This is me playing the USA Stars and Stripes on bugle with every note in place. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYi1n3xpZ56rb9k. As a vocalist we can use overtones and vowels to set the pitch of the voice box rather than guessing. That means perfect pitch if you grow up doing it, or great relative pitch and confidence otherwise.

I have been practicing extreme vocals now for probably 3 maybe 4 years, and I just found out that I have been doing bits and pieces of Tuvan Throat Singing without even knowing what it was. thank you very much. with this tutorial i got pretty fast the feeling I need to have to create those over tones with a natural feeling air flow. Now I know and am able to imagine how it should feel to produce those over tones to train to reproduce those without stressing my voice. I am trying to increase my ability to sing without a teacher at the moment so I try to learn different techniques to get better controll to increase the feeling and natural use of my voice. I've been doing those low tones like that for years, didn't know it was related to this, so that's interesting. I was a while ago trying to learn subhamonic singing, and I got to a point where I could make sounds several octaves lower than my lowest chest note under normal singing conditions, I assumed my tone was just not practiced enough to sound smoother like subharmonic singing sounds, but it ends up I had instead accidentally fell into bass throat singing.

I'm having trouble with the Kargyraa technique. When I try, I either get a rumbling in my throat with out any actual note, and I cannot figure out how to get it TO a note, or it sounds, for lack of a better analogy, like Cookie Monster, and it makes my throat hurt horridly. I cannot figure it out with the video.

Thank you so much for this video. I have only found one other real throat singer willing to teach in detail on KZbin, but he wants you to pay for the tutorials. I do think people need to be careful watching these types of videos and trying it just because it is such an advanced skill that needs to be done right, but at the same time it can be fairly easy as long as you have the correct teachings. I'm sort of upset that somebody would want to profit off of something so beautiful and not just show the world like you do. I hope to watch more of your videos in the future and follow you on your adventures!
