I totally understand your cat being your hero. I live alone and before quarantine all my social interaction came from my classes and work. Well classes were cancelled and I lost my job so now it is just me and my cat alone and having her to play, cuddle, and talk with has been a major help keeping myself somewhat mentally and emotionally healthy these last few months.

Timmy Try using a Chamois for blending. Blending with my fingers bugs me like you with the q-tips so an artists chamois is a good alternative. Wrapped over your finger for a large area or wrapped over the eraser end of a pencil for finer details. 👍🏻

I was soooo happy to see a charcoal-themed box this month. I haven't touched charcoal in I think 10 years now, and I remember really loving it. So when the box came I was super into it. I love the willow charcoal. It's so delicate and smooth to work with. Your picture of Sally came out really great. I love how you utilized the mid-toned paper and white chalk pencil. It pops so well and you captured the emotion of the face wonderfully. Also really happy to see your gouache piece in the zine! I really loved that one.

Loki is the art approver like Sally comes and checks up on me ..and if I'm ever crying he will come up and gently paw my face❤ hella a recent rescue comes and sits with me at night so I'm not alone.. and gabe will sleep on my head keeping the monsters away with the most epic purr! But also comes and flops on me to say good morning while I'm drinking my coffee hahha .

You can use that eraser pencil with ink fineliners at least on transparent paper. That white end really rubs off ink like the blue end on those red and blue erasers but it roughs up the paper which you can smooth back down with the reddish end :3

I totally agree with you about our pets being our heroes when we spend all day with them. I’m sort of in a similar situation as you are but not exactly I’m at home because I’m a Chronic Pain patient and an Artist. I can’t work outside of my home cause it’s just not something I’m able to do anymore (and it SUCKS, I miss the human contact with people! ) we had a German Shepherd she lived 17years she passed this March I spent every single day with her except when we were on vacation (she went on her own vacation to a puppy spa it was really nice she was spoiled!!!). So when we lost her I lost a part of me . It was like I lost a part of my artistic muse she was always in my studio under my table. So I know exactly what your saying about Sally. I loved both of your pictures. The one of Sally came out beautifully because of the midtone papers do the charcoal they just work so wonderfully together. The peony you drew also came out very nice . You’re to hard on yourself cause it’s your artwork but it is beautiful and very nicely done. It’s funny I never drew my dog because by the time I was good enough to draw her I worried it would be the last picture I’d draw of her so I never drew her & now, I’m not emotionally ready to draw the memorial picture of her to put in a frame near her ashes with her collar in my studio or family room (we haven’t decided where we’re putting her) we got a puppy who likes to inspect everything!

In my little part of the world we say pee-ah-nee, which can sound distressingly like "pee on me." 🤭 Sally & her portrait are exquisite❣ 🐈 Take good care of her, yourself, the boyfriend, & everyone else; be safe, happy, & well. It could be due to the type of pencil its being used with. You know like how some pencil crayons are waxy and some are not? It could just be a mismatch due to the base make up of it.
