13.1 miles with no training? Sounds like a BRILLIANT idea, right?
Anyway let's just say that the 2023 NYC Half will be a race I won't soon forget but NOT for the reasons I expected. Let me know if you've ever run into my "issue" on the race course.

I have a cold weather bathroom story for you. Picture this, it's January 2010 and I'm running the Disney Marathon. As I recall it something like 18 degrees at the gun. Anyway the race begins and at the 6 mile mark my bladder say, "yo, my man, either hit a bathroom or it's going to get really warm followed by really cold down here." So, I turn off and hit a restroom in tomorrowland. Thing is, sweat and below freezing weather doesn't go together. Let's say maybe I was frozen to my shorts. Hypothetically had to quickly and painfully unstick myself, go, and then chug along for another 20 miles. Yeah, that happened. I think it might have gotten up 36 by the time I finshed that race. Coldest race ever for me and it was in Orlando, FL

the lesson is to have your expectations aligned with what brings joy. For me, it's all about being present and doing things at my own pace. Cool video

I guess with any race distance it's the same, if your base fitness is good enough to finish then go and do it. I did my first marathon with only 2 long runs as dedicated training but since I was "casually "running daily anyways I managed to finish. My PB (with a proper training plan) is much faster with less pain, so I would still recommend to follow a training plan.

No question, having a training plan is the way to go!

Congrats! Yep, running has taught me that expectation can be the thief of joy. Sometimes not having any makes it better.

Hey Kori, great video! It's awesome to see you pushing through and completing the NYC Half Marathon, even without training. The challenges you faced during the race made it even more memorable and relatable. Your positive attitude and determination are inspiring. Keep up the fantastic work! Can't wait to see more of your running adventures. 👍

Great job as always. Looking forward to the Kofuzi follow up: long overdue. Oh, and as I was getting my playlist together for my race, all I could think about was BANGERZ, Hit the BANGERZ! I had to go back in the archives to fine where I heard that from 😂!

While you didn't train for this one, you have trained for it before so you knew your body could do it, even if a bit slower. I continued to be amazed at how we can decide to go 5 or 13 miles and the legs and lungs get us there!

I have been watching TV news broadcasters for decades. You are the first newsman I have ever seen who ever discussed his bathroom habits in public. LOL LOL LOL. I really like the point of your video. Running for fun can be just as fun as "suffering" for a Personal Best. I dropped out of this same race for the same problem you had -- not enough training. Let's BOTH do better for the NYC Marathon.

I never had to go during a race till Tokyo 😭 I was told it's AWFUL at the Tokyo Marathon and it is from first hand experience 😭 It took me 8-9 mins to use the toilet. That killed my goal 😭😭😭 Next time I'm just going in my shorts while running 🤣🤣🤣 BTW there were some toilets 800 meters off the course! That's 800m out and 800m back, a mile! 😐 CRAZY!!!! Glad the toilets I used was just half way down the block. It could have been much worse. Regarding training, YES train!!!! 😁

Kori - I sure wish YOU had done the "live" PIX11 report on the Brooklyn Half Marathon. I just watched Greg Mocker's finish line report on KZbin. Horrible! He called the wheelchair racers "The accessible people!" He had such a boring monotone when announcing the winner had run a new course record. He had no business covering a story that clearly bored him. At the end of his report he said he would be back later for another report, but no way was I going to watch that one. I wish YOU had done the TV report - you would have conveyed the race report properly.

Runners often underestimate the value of well-rested legs.😁But sure, you've run marathons and half marathons in the not too distant past, and IIRC you had been running, if not training. There's lots of fine print on a race disclaimer and I don't usually read them closely, but I don't remember ever agreeing that I would run one as fast as possible or attempt to PR at all costs. It was going to be OK, and low expectations help us to start out easier which usually makes races more enjoyable. Kudos on a fine race and a fun video!

anabolicgardo - Can't you express your feelings without using the "f" word? Even misspelling it, it is still "jarring" to read it on a decent, wholesome site like this.
