Rickman’s reaction to falling was genuine. They dropped him in “2” instead of “3” so he wasn’t ready.

Yes, the director knew that dropping Rickman on queue would make for a non reaction from 20 feet, after all, he's a trained actor, so he tricked him by dropping him on the count of 2.😅

Yeah this movie was a huge gamble. Bruce Willis had just done Blind Date which bombed hard and was considering quitting acting. Alan Rickman didn't want to be the bad guy. And look at the magic these two men put on screen.

"He could be a bartender for all we know" Funny thing is.. Bruce Willis.. He left school in 1977 and moved to New York City, where he supported himself in the early 1980s as a bartender at the Manhattan art bar Kamikaze while living in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. So he was in fact a Bartender at one point! That line makes me laugh because of that fact!! lol

"Welcome to the party, pal!" It isn't Christmas in my house until Hans Gruber is THROWN out of the Nakatomi Building. 😎 🎄 Fun Fact: Alan Rickman nearly passed up the role of Hans Gruber, which ended up being his first film role. He had only arrived in Hollywood two days earlier and was appalled by the idea of his first role being the villain in an action film. To a degree, Rickman was right to be concerned considering his performance as Hans Gruber was so hailed that the actor had to struggle being typecast as a player of villains for much of his career. First Face-Off Fact: The scene in which Gruber and McClane meet fir the first time was inserted into the script after Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber) was found to be proficient at mimicking American accents. The filmmakers had been looking for a way to have the two characters meet prior to the climax and capitalized on Rickman's talent. Making Lemonade Fact: The scene where McClane falls down a shaft was a mistake by the stuntman, who was supposed to grab the first vent, as it originally was planned. He slipped and continued to fall, but the shot was used anyway; it was edited together with one where McClane grabs the next vent down as he falls.

@@JayBondReacts Yea, I didn't think you had so tried not to say anything that was too much of a spoiler. Also, in case you didn't notice...I edited my comment just as you were hearting it to add the Asian candy lover terrorist. Even if everyone else also watches the Lethal Weapon series, you should still watch it as well as it is great...all 4 of them with a 5th one in production, this time directed by Mel Gibson as the director of the other 4 as well as Superman '79 and Lost Boys, Richard Donner, recently passed away and was originally attached to the production. He made Mel promise to finish the film before he passed away. And yes, the first one takes place at Christmas like Die Hard 1 (and 2)...Shane Black, the writer, is notorious for setting his films at Christmas time.

Jay, assuming no one else has mentioned this, the building used as the setting for Nakatomi Plaza is a high-rise office building in Century City, Los Angeles, California that, while in the film, houses the headquarters of the California branch of the Nakatomi Corporation, is actually portrayed by the Fox Plaza building, the main headquarters of 20th Century Fox. The building was actually partially under construction at the time so most if not all of the film takes place at the building with some sets constructed there but others at 2 large soundstages at the studio plus the practical effects like a lot of the pyrotechnics also shot in a controlled environment. The shot of the building exploding with the helicopter is a I believe something like a 1/5 scale model (25 feet tall) shot at high speed.

30:40 They don't do u.s. bearer bonds in movies these days because they don't really exist anymore. Even when this movie (and Beverly Hills Cop) were made they were kind of antiquated since issuing them was effectively outlawed in 1982. They were a fantastic way to move illicit money around. It's definitely a Christmas movie, but I understand why some people have a visceral reaction to labeling it as such. It has all the emotional hallmarks and themes of a Christmas movie along with the surface level references.

16:53 - you mentioned the Tales from the Crypt episode "And All Through the House". In that episode, the husband's name is Joseph Kamen - that's a nod to the comic book artist Jack Kamen who was one of the main artists for EC Comics, the publishers of the original "Tales from the Crypt" comic books in the 1950's. Fun fact, Jack Kamen's son is Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway scooter and many, many other inventions. (Also in that episode the radio announcer warns the "Gains County area" of the escaped maniac. The publisher of EC Comics was a guy named William Gaines. And the police officer's name is "Feldstein". Al Feldstein was an artist and writer at EC.) The original comic story "And All Through the House" appeared in 'The Vault of Horror" issue number 35 in 1954. It was also adapted for the 1972 'Tales from the Crypt' film. I found a video read-through of the original comic story: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZvRn2yPotF3fsU

I am glad that you finally got to this one. It has been a long time coming... However, at least you picked the right time of year. It wouldn't have had the same effect, if you had watched this in May. Every time I see this, I am impressed with how well put together it is. There aren't too many scenes that are awkwardly shoved in, to provide obvious exposition, neither are there overly long throwaway conversations or monologues about philosophy. Each piece feels like it belongs & is necessary to the movie. It's amazing what they are able to pull off, without all the modern, close-up, shaky-cam stuff. I think this TRULY sets the standard for claustrophobic action films, that are primarily based on a single location. I suppose, it's similar to that other Christmas film: Home Alone. To me, there's no doubt that this is a Christmas movie. Not only does it have Christmas themes throughout, it even ends with Christmas music. Instead of having a distinctive theme song, they use Let it Snow. Also, there's a little classic Run DMC. If Plane-Trains can be considered a Thanksgiving movie, surely this is a Christmas movie, by all similar criteria.

So happy you reacted to this movie, it's one of my favorites. My favorite is Die Hard with a Vengeance, so I'm excited for you to react to that one. There is a show on Netflix called Movies that Made Us, and they talk about things you don't know about popular movies. What was really interesting was that they didn't originally want Bruce Willis for the role of John McClane because up until this point he had mostly been starring in comedies and they didn't feel people would buy him as an "action hero." Anyway when they released the movie, in order to get people to go see it, they didn't feature Bruce Willis on the poster just Nakatomi tower. After the movie started doing well, they re-released the poster with Bruce Willis on it. Also I learned that Karl was a former Russian (I think) ballet dancer. I saw someone mention Clarence Gilyard who played Theo, loved him on Walker, Texas Ranger and great actor overall. As always great reaction!!

I got to watch them both in the theater for their anniversaries, the Fifth Element in 2017 and Die Hard in 2018. Even though I love horror, I'm more of an action fangirl. I just love seeing these badass good guys kill the shit out of the villains. My all time favorite franchise is Leathal Weapon. All 4 movies are great and it has some good humor too. I don't really like the comedy genre. I think most of these action movies have funnier jokes and moments. If you can, both Die Hard 2 and the first Lethal Weapon take place on Christmas too. "It's interesting that it used to always be BONDS back then, while now it is always bags of cash!" That's because all (negotiable) Bearer Bonds have essentially "expired" (gone into escrow) by the year 2000. I worked in a Bank's Bear Bond processing department in the 90s. And it was explained that, some time ago the Government realized that there was all this money changing hands with no "official record" of it (Bearer Bonds) & thus the Government wasn't getting "their cut" of that money, so they basically OUTLAWED the issuing of NEW Bearer Bonds. ALL bonds issued now are "Registered Bonds". Which have a "registered owner" no matter WHO is in possession of it. And is thus traceable & (more importantly) TAXABLE! And all previously issued Bearer Bonds have now expired & any unclaimed money has gone into Escrow. (held in waiting) Basically, the Government is nothing more than the BIGGEST Mafia on the block! (Always taking "their cut",) THAT is why it is always "CASH" now. (because bearer bonds no longer exist) And now ONLY cash is (mostly) untraceable. (i.e. "Who holds it, OWNS it.") And with electronic transactions & Governments trying to issue DIGITAL CURRENCY, even CASH is being phased out! So? Soon, the Government will be able to trace EVERY penny you spend & earn. And that is NOT a "conspiracy theory".
@JayBondReacts
@JayBondReacts 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, thanks for the heads up on all that. I had no idea. And yeah, everything is basically traceable so I bet we'll be seeing movies now phase out cash in favor of crypto currency like Bitcoin which, while can be traced back to an account, isn't tied to a person.

Ah, Die Hard. The only movie to feature THE 2 go-to actors when needed an asshole in your movie in the '80s. William Atherton(from Ghostbusters & Real Genius) and Paul Gleason(from The Breakfast Club & Trading Places).

Oh Jay. First off, great reaction. Second, don't wait a year to watch Die Hard 2 because it also happens around Christmas time. Third, I don't consider this a Christmas movie (anymore). The reason is because it became a topic of argument. When I first saw it in '88, I never considered it to be a Christmas movie. It was just an Action movie that kicked ass. Then the internet happened. When I first heard people regarded this as a Christmas movie, I though, sure, it's on Christmas Eve and there are songs and decorations etc. so I was ok with the thought of it being a Christmas movie. Then the argument came. I quickly became saddened by people just doing it to keep the argument going. I then jumped off the bandwagon of this being a Christmas movie and going back to it being an awesome Action movie on Christmas. The internet has now made me a Scrooge. Anyways, lol, keep up the gems and see you in the next ones.

Well I know that it's the eternal question, is it a Christmas film? I have to say that for me it is but I also understand why people say that it's not. A good film and it makes me laugh that even though Alan Rickman plays a German, it's another Brit playing the bad guy! Another enjoyable reaction and I hope that you have a good time over Christmas, enjoy the holidays!

best christmas movie ever. I think this is the only movie that the bad guys are mentioned in the credits by name. I mean it has the name of the actor and his terrorist name. I always wanted to know the name of the bad guy that John throw out the window and land in the cop car. I think the name was Marko.

Flying from NYC to California, "John McClane" found this song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYqrnZh8e82ffM0 Bruce Willis was known as "That TV guy" for the Rom-Com "Moonlighting." John McClane is a working class guy, isn't a muscle-bound "Rambo-type," takes damage, has moments of fear/doubt/introspection, and is "dead man walking" by the last quarter of the movie. Is it any wonder that the audience sees themselves in him.

One of the better of the series. Die Hard 2: Die Harder is also a Christmas movie, while 3 (Die Hard With a Vengeance) and 4 (Live Free or Die Hard) are summer movies. Don't watch 5. Ever. Just pretend it doesn't exist and the series ends with 4n😅

It was obviously not John. The fire is coming from WAY lower than that boardroom John is in, and from the same area they shoot the rocket from later. You can also hear the gunfire when John yells "welcome to the party pal!" out the window.
