By a strange coincidence I've just binge-watched the original Bourne trilogy (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum) back-to-back a couple of days ago. The story is remarkably solid across all three films and when Paul Greengrass takes over directorial duties with Supremacy the action gets ramped up even higher. Watch the rest of the trilogy, you're in for a thrilling ride.

My two favorite parts: 1) the conversation in the diner when Bourne talks about all the things he knows, and says, "How can I know all that, and not know who I am?" That's when I was like, oh yeah, I'm in this, I love it. 2) the complex plan Jason comes up with, only for Marie to get the info they needed in a much simpler way, lol! Brilliant and funny.

Here's another vote for The Bourne Legacy. My only dis against it is that it tries very hard to be a "Bourne" movie, even though the Bourne character only appears in pictures in the background. I prefer watching it to the third movie; and it's miles better than the cobbled together Jason Bourne movie.

The first 3 Bourne movies are all great. The 4th one with Jeremy Renner and no Matt Damon wasn't actually bad, but it wasn't anywhere near as good. One unfortunate side effect of the success of the Bourne franchise was the sudden proliferation of movies with fight sequences that are nothing but tons of quick cuts and shaky cam where you don't have any real idea of what's going on. The Bourne movies use quick cuts and shaky cams for fight sequences that feel fast and dynamic, and they make it work because they don't overuse it to the point that you can't tell what's happening in the fight. They carefully focus shots on the elements that they want you to focus on to tell the story of the fight: like the pen in the Paris apartment fight. Most other movies that jumped on the quick cuts and shaky cam bandwagon didn't do that, and instead of using it to help tell the story, they used it so that they didn't have to spend so much money making stunts and/or VFX shots look good/believable.

The whole premise for the "fourth" one is kind of silly in my opinion. While it's plausable CIA would set out to terminate a single asset that's belived to have gone "rogue", the actions taken in 'The Bourne Legacy' isn't even remotely belivable, as the proverbial cat's already out of the bag. There's simply no reason is there's no longer anything left to protect, or to hide at that point. It would just be wasting valuable resources for no reason at all.

This will likely always remain my favourite spy thriller, period. The thing I like about it is the sense of mystery, the character development, and the fact that it's a road movie in disguise. The sequels kept those basics, but are also a wee bit more actiony. This first film feels so grounded, and not overacted by the two leads, I can rather easily imagine most ordinary people in either Bourne's or Marie's shoes. As part of the more grounded tone, a man like Bourne being a spy and a hitman actually makes sense, since he looks like an average Joe. Even though it's very much an early 2000s story (I still have a hard time believing it's 20 years old, remember watching it when it was new), I feel that the execution is, IMHO, rather timeless. It's like the perfect marriage of an old-school spy film with more 21st century sensibilities. Also, the Mini Cooper chase has to be my favourite car chase in any movie. Taught everyone not to underestimate a zippy little 1960s car. :-)

🏃 If chase movies like this and "The Fugitive," where an innocent man is on the run to avoid either being captured or killed are what you're into, then "The Running Man" (1987) with Arnold Schwarzenegger and "The Minority Report" (2002) with Tom Cruise, should both definitely be on your future bucket list. 😎👍

About 20 summers ago, the Bourne Saga on film began. Unquestionably one of the best spy franchises. Anybody would want to be James Bond. But for me, Jason Bourne was more my speed. I have the special edition of The Bourne identity with an alternate beginning and ending. The novel series by Robert Ludlum (beginning in 1980, my birth year) showed Bourne as an reluctant hero. With all he learned and knew as an operative, nobody was going to stop the bad guys better than he could. After uncovering each and every conspiracy he faced, peace was the closest thing to victory.

6:25 I love this about you Jen, I would have never expected it! When I was a young teen in 2000 the original PC demo came out, I think on a PC Gamer magazine pack-in CD. I remember distinctly the mission is to interrupt a crime boss meeting in a Chinese restaurant. I still distinctly remember finding out you could sneak through the bathroom window, hide your guns inside, go get the disguise of one of the targets and attend the meeting and then excuse yourself to the bathroom and kick the door open and lay waste to the rest of the targets. No other game had anything even remotely like it at the time and I was hooked since. 22 years later and the basic formula still works, the modern trilogy absolutely does the original series justice.

In 2010, a reporter asked Matt Damon what the next Bourne movie would be titled. He replied, "Uhhh, the Bourne Redundancy." He said later that year that he would not return for another. The franchise produced the next film with an alternative "asset", played by Jeremy Renner, which was a largely unpopular move, though fans would say it was more misunderstood. Damon did return to the franchise, however, and the reason he did was that a genuinely new and interesting story came about because of real life events: the Snowden NSA leaks.

This movie gets a lot of stick for inaugurating the era of choppily-edited, handheld, closely shot action sequences, but it's not actually that bad itself. The action scenes are chaotic, much like actual combat, but the movements and developments still read pretty well. Other movies that want the same feel seem to opt more for slow motion or outright having the action happen out of sight. The Equalizer does both, and I imagine Nobody (which I haven't seen yet) probably does as well.

“…it’s a bit ambiguous about who are the bad guys and good guys…” exactly, there are none! Yes, watch the other two in the original trilogy at least. I always felt the Bond franchise (and other post-Bourne spy movies) had to change because of Bourne, at least in part. Bourne changed mass audience expectations. Incidentally, the bespectacled assassin in the field, The Professor, was played by Clive Owen, who was in the conversation for Bond at one time. I love his line. "Look at what they make you give."

One of my favorite action movies. I think Bourne got a hint where Marie might hide when she wore that t-shirt with "Corfu" after that night in Paris.

Hi Jen,some really great recent choices on your channel lately. I suggested this one the last time I made comment. Speed Racer, visually stunning movie. Anime style film with more colors than I can count. A really fun movie about car racing. With a great ending. I'm sure you and your viewers will enjoy it. Keep the great picks coming, I'm here for them.

So these films are based on books by acclaimed thriller writer Robert Ludlum. If you love really good spy assassin thrillers they make for excellent reading, or if you don’t have the time to read the audiobooks on Audible read by Scott Brick are excellent too. They don’t share much in common though, minus the titles and the basic plot of an assassin losing his memory and wanting his identity back, the locations, some character names and several moments of action. Other than that, totally different plots. The books are more Cold War espionage than the movies, about Bourne realising he’s an assassin meant to draw out a notorious assassin, which was changed in the movies to make him the target of his own organisation in order to prevent him whistleblowing through his actions.

I read some of the comments,I think ppl are a little confused. He made 4 movies. One he is not in at all. There was another movie that came out later that continues and is dope with "Julia Styles and very popular. "Bourne Identity "Supremacy "Ultimatum "JASON BOURNE (2016)👍

In the books, his master skills are in complete identity change, even down to walking with a different gait. Also a photographic memory, with the exception of the memories he lost. Fluency in multiple languages, close combat [hand2hand and weapons proficiency. Plus a very high I.Q.! The books start his origins in Vietnam, but the movie series was changed/updated to make him more modern. Edit: Which, masters of identities, is also the Hitman Agent’s (all of them, not just 47) superior ability. That’s why they were all bald. Easier to make wigs look more natural.

Couple facts: 1 - the movie in no way resembles the book by Robert Ludlum; the book was about, like, hunting Carlos the Jackal. Just... so different. 2 - I think the next 2 movies (plus there's a Jeremy Renner 4th one) aren't nearly as good. They make a few decisions that I just disagree with; can't get into that without spoilers 3 - Doug Liman, who also directed the fantastic - and fantastically fun - "Edge of Tomorrow"
