the greates thing about this movie is the script. Everything happens for a reason. Every event, as meaningless as it seems to be at first has a payoff later on. To give an example, when John and Holly are arguing after they met again, a couple breaks into the room about to fuck. A couple of scenes later, when the terrorists arrive, they open the room next to where John is hiding and get distracted by this couple fucking which allow John to escape. And fucking EVERYTHING is like that. Another example, Holly has changed her last name (which at first seems to be like a way to show how appart she and John are), and she's pissed at John, so she flips the picture she has of him in her study. Those two seemingly meaningless things are the things that keep the fact that she's John's wife hidden for so long from Alan Rickman. Seriously, this movie is fucking genious.

Die Hard & Die Hard With A Vengeance...my childhood right there. Infact Bruce Willis in Die Hard With A Vengeance looked AND acted almost exactly like my father at the time that it made sense why I liked him even more. So a heroic figure in a action movie resembled my hero in real life. Die Hard 2: Die Harder was fun but just felt sort of there (looking at the original Trilogy), it was entertaining but really just to show how badass John McLane STILL is. Die Hard With A Vengeance took FULL advantage of New York City, so NYC felt like a character. His (forced by Simon) partner Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson) was the perfect John-like 'sidekick' which added plenty more to the movie and even had Simon Gruber as the perfect Die Hard villain next to Hans. Live Free or Die Hard comes along with a PG-13 rating but then surprised me at how enjoyable it was for a "modern Die Hard", with technology cleverly as it's theme. THEN A Good Day to Die Hard comes out of nowhere JUST to lure in fans that DIDN'T want Die Hard to be rated PG-13 with an R-RATING...a complete waste of effort all around on that movie. To the point I don't even want to include it in the series. Die Hard is definitely one of the most nostalgic action movies EVER MADE. Just like how one my most nostalgic video games would be Die Hard Trilogy on PS1...infact that game was so fun it made me buy the movies on VHS which then became my favorite action films (1 & 3). Around that time I KEPT seeing DHWaV previews before other movies in theaters and wanted to see it SO BAD...I saw a lot of R Rated movies when I was a kid in theaters, but that one I sadly didn't...but when I DID buy the VHS, I watched it religiously. I knew every line, every moment, that movie is basically in my blood now as THE action movie of my childhood. I would even say Terminator and Judgement Day but I would consider those Sci-Fi movies not just Action so DIE HARD (1 & 3 equally) was my action movie, while Terminator (1 & 2) was my sci-fi movie, as Dawn of the Dead (1978) was my horror movie. Those movies right there basically symbolize my childhood obssessions. Yet even today I can't kill an insect without feeling bad about it (unless its a mosquito, tick or flea). I looooved violent movies and games, because it's all fantasy, I look at the World around us today falling apart rapidly with violence on the streets, violence in schools, violence across the World with myself just asking "WHY!?". So when they blame violent movies and games, it's hard to agree when I watched and played it ALL THE TIME and killing my friends in Mortal Kombat, but yet I find every living species beautiful and important. Back onto Die Hard though...this movie fucking rocks. There IS NO COMPARISSON. It stands it's ground and nothing will ever be able to top this no matter HOW much cgi or effects you throw at is, this just IS what it IS, which is a masterpiece.

What made Die Hard even more special is that it was totally unexpected. Bruce Willis at the time was just that guy from a t.v.show called Moonlighting. Not exactly a show that teenage boys watched. Like Jeremy said Action movies were already defined by the likes of Arnold and Stallone at the time so to hear that this guy was in one your first reaction was one of "HUH?" To say that he pulled it off would be an understatement. Good story.Great Action. A little humor thrown in. It was a movie came along at the right time.

My absolute favorite part of Die Hard was near the end, when Gruber repeats that catchphrase back to McClane(You know which part). I can't choose of a favorite protagonist, but Gruber was definitely one of my favorite villains. Speaking of kinda old action flicks, I'd really like to see you do a review of Schwarzenegger's Last Action Hero. I watched it yesterday and was really surprised at how good it was.

You nailed it Jeremy. This is, without a doubt, one of the absolute best action pictures of all time. It holds up extremely well, and is still one of my go to movies when I really need a fix. My only point of contention is what you said about Sgt. Al Powell being his only support. What about Argyle? He helps save the day. "We got everything you need: CD, CB, TV, VHS..." What, not even an honorable mention? He was the man.

Die Hard wasn't just a fantastic action movie, it completely changed the genre; instead of an invincible hero with muscles upon muscles, we had an Average Joe with a badge. Casting Bruce Willis was a genius move; Stallone or Schwarzenegger would not have been able to pull the role off as written.

I don't consider any of the Die Hard sequels to be cannon to this awesome, holy action-packed movie. All of those sequels I just consider 'what-if' stories. Kinda like fanfiction that doesn't improve or continue the story. Die Hard ended with John McClain killing all of the bad guys, getting back with his wife, and living happily-ever-after. Nothing else happens after that. Nothing! Said and done with!

I'd probably have to say my favorite protagonist in any film would have to be the T-800 Arnold played in Terminator 2. He was a robot soldier with one initial measure to fulfill the survival of John Conner. However, through the course of the film he not only protected John Conner, he attained a level of humanity, and ultimately sacrificed himself for sake of humanity. On another level it was amazing seeing a character transform from a antagonist into a protagonist in the same film series.

and not forgetting the "goons", who were all unique and electric. The hungry Chinese guy, the German brother duo, the cowboy guy, the hacker and the rest. as well as the Japanese boss, the limo kid, and that one guy who always showed up in 80s and 90s movies as some seedy type, who played one of the FBI guys. there is no weakly portrayed part in this movie. Its a unified front of A-GAME. Same goes for McTiernans other classics from the golden age - Predator and The Hunt for Red October.

I was going to except i didn't think people would get it :) I have been saying ever since i read watchman that rorschach would serve a greater good if he became a villain in the batman universe. they are very much alike in that they both have a code but the one key difference that makes them so different is where they draw that line. batman won't kill to save gotham but rorchach would. yet batman would let something small go unpunished if he thought it would serve a greater good, rorchach won't

John McClane. Greatest action movie character of all time. He's become such an icon to me that I am perfectly fine with Die Hard 4 & 5 being so over the top. He was superman to me when I was a kid. Still is in a lot of ways. Also, Indiana Jones. Also, James Bond. The Trifecta. Probably why I love the Uncharted games so much. Nathan Drake is like John McClane and Indiana Jones had a baby.

The best action movie to date, in my opinion. The awesome thing about John McClane is while being a badass cop, he had this great "how the fuck did I get myself into this" attitude that pervades a lot of the dialog, like Jack Burton in Once Upon a Time in China.

Hey Jeremy, you need to do more classics reviews, still we are waiting for the one of Back to the Future, and I'm dying to see you make a review on Indiana Jones trilogy (yes the TRILOGY), and Matrix... at least Matrix 1, please take sometime for doing those reviews XD.

Fun fact: It's based off a book that's a sequel in its own series. They decided though to change it left and right, but save the best parts from the book

just finished watching it with the girlfriend and she liked it too (so the relationship is safe) kinda forgot how much fun it was, as for Bruce talking over the radio with the cop, i guess the best part is that the bad guys can listen in too, so that walkie talkie thingy really just becomes a way for John to remain in "touch" with his humanity, talking about children, his wife and all of that. just my 2 cents

Each great actor has one great movie. Each great actor is known forever by his or her protagonist or villain. Alan Rickman is Hans Gruber Alec Guinness is Obi-wan Kenobi Sylvester Stallone is Rocky and/or Rambo Gary Oldman is Dracula Nick Cage is the Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze or just Nick Cage Some actors get stuck with their association of a character. Poor Alec Guinness is Obi-wan yet has performed in many movies. But, Star Wars being what it is has type cast him as that old man on Tatooine.

Heat = Awesometacular hands down, the fact the actual bank robbery is one of THE explosive scenes ever.. so realistic, that the Hollywood bank robbery in real life seemed to mimic the movie.. the acting, hands down the best.. Waynegro was an evil son of a biscuit too.. or however you spell his name, the coffee stop scene with Robert & Al. Priceless!

For me back in the early 90s I've always compared John MacClean with Martin Riggs from Lethal Weapon and Schwarzenegger with Stallone.. First two are casual guys and the others were muscles war machines.. Still,Die Hard and Lethal Weapon are my most favorite action franchise from that time.

I watch the first Die Hard film more regularly now and it is an AWESOME movie. I hope Mr. Ebert has second thoughts if he watches your review, his review he gave back in '88 giving it a mere 2 stars which is a stab in the back really to this film!
