28 Grammy Awards. 40 major motion picture scores. Quincy Jones's 1962 tune "Soul Bossa Nova", which originated on the Big Band Bossa Nova album, was used as the theme for the 1997 spy comedy Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Also, Jones produced the The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Quincy Jones produced the Michael Jackson album, Thriller, which sold 65 million copies and became the highest-selling album of all time. Quincy Jones is a legend, one of the most famous record producers....like Michael Jackson's albums (Thriller, Bad, Off the Wall), co-wrote "We Are the World" with him & produced it. Started out as a composer writing the scores for "Cactus Flower" "In Cold Blood" "In the Heat of the Night" to name a few as well as writing tv themes (Ironside, Sanford & Son, Banecek, etc). Arranged for Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald among others. Won 28 Grammy Awards as well as the Grammy Legend Award. I left out a ton of stuff. That's who Quincy is.

Thanks, Ashleigh! 🪙 Yes, that was really a young Michael Caine. That clip isn't from it, but he looked like that when he was in HURRY SUNDOWN (1967), in which my mother had a cameo... in the courtroom scene.

My favorite thing about that opening bit is the most-obscure thing about it. George Clinton perfectly aped the style of John Barry's scores for the Connery Bond films everywhere else in this trilogy, _except_ in the opening bit with Tom Cruise here. There, he switched to a pitch-perfect imitation of David Arnold's scores for the Pierce Brosnan Bond films (IE, the “current” Bond films when “Goldmember” came out). It's subtle-as-hell, and absolutely perfect, and I adore it.

Great to see this so soon. But I hope that Ashleigh has not given up on the James Bond movies. There is a rumor that she has...but that would be terrible because the next one she would watch is The Spy Who Loved Me...which is considered by many people to be the best of all the Bond movies...but is absolutely the best one that Roger Moore starred in. 👍

I was on a plane flying to Australia when this came out and was showing in flight. I was at the scene where FB was taking a d@mp and I was laughing out loud, though trying to hold it in and when he looked into the bowl and said "I didn't have any corn." Literally within a matter of seconds, the stewardess served me my meal and there was a corn in it. I LOST IT! I was laughing so loud everyone turned to look. Caine was actually the second inspiration behind Connery for Austin Powers with his character Harry Palmer in the film The Ipcress File and it's four sequels which is why he was brought on to portray Nigel. Connery was offered the role as well but declined and Honor Blackman who played Pussy Galore was offered to play Austin’s mother Mrs. Powers. The flashback scene with the young Caine was from the movie Hurry Sundown which is not a Harry Palmer film but still cool as a meta flashback.

Here are the films featuring Harry Palmer: The Ipcress File (1965) - Palmer investigates the disappearances of several British scientists, dealing with brainwashing and complex conspiracies. Funeral in Berlin (1966) - Palmer is sent to Berlin to arrange the defection of a Soviet officer. Billion Dollar Brain (1967) - Palmer tackles a plot involving a renegade intelligence agent and a computer that is controlling an anti-Communist uprising. Bullet to Beijing (1995) - After the Cold War, Palmer is reactivated for a mission involving stolen bio-chemical weapons. Midnight in Saint Petersburg (1996) - Palmer, now a private investigator, tries to stop a nuclear device from being smuggled into the wrong hands. I've seen all of them. Bullet to Beijing is probably my fav.
