So I've always thought there was something off (uneven) with this epic piece, and I could never put my finger on it. I've always confused the beginning theme and the march-like-theme, one or the other would come to mind whenever I thought of this piece, but why were they so similar? I guess because both are in the same key of C major! (and triumphant) So its strange to think that a master of counterpoint and chromaticism decided to keep both of the main themes in the same key. (Even a basic sonata form shifts from tonic to dominant, or another key). Anyways, I'm not criticizing, the polyphonic complexity of this work is of the highest order, but I find it so interesting that both of those themes are in the same key. I'm sure he had his reasons.

Well, Wagner made exceptions to many rules.
@pavelchenarev72155 жыл бұрын
Stephen Dedalus Yeah I suppose, but given the complexity of this work, breaking this rule comes off sort of amateurish.

P C There’s a reason why Wagner wrote “Vorspiel” on the score and not “Sonata”, because it’s not designed to follow the exact formatting of sonata allegro. This is not a symphony, and calling Wagner an amateur because he didn’t write the prelude to his music drama as if it were the first movement to a symphony in c is being downright unfair.
@jamjam92534 жыл бұрын
I think that Wagner maybe wanted - despite all contrapunctal structure - a very strong and "settled" sound in this prelude, that could explain why he keeps c Major for so long
@touficsarkis2832 жыл бұрын
@@jamjam9253 i would say this is the reason he kept botj in C. This the only opera he wrote where time and space are not only defined, but realistic, and also the only opera where no elements of fantasy are added. His use of the same key was him relling us, we are here and everything will happen here

I have mixed feelings about this piece. For one, it’s is a really cool Beethoven risqué overture that’s well composed and orchestrated. Yet when I first heard about it, I learned that it was used by the Nazis in triumph of the will. Yikes.
@captainhaddock64355 жыл бұрын
So what? Beethoven was used for Nazi Propaganda. Liszt was used for Nazi Propaganda. Mozart was used for Nazi Propaganda. Even Lehar. Should we write off every composer the Nazis used for propaganda?

@@GreenTeaViewer Historically speaking, Wagner was in fact supportive of the Nazis in his time and racist towards the Jewish. Beautiful music but bad person. (or at least that is what I learned in Music Appreciation)

@@mauithedemigod189 Wagner couldn’t be supportive of the Nazis since he died before Hitler was born :p

@@leocadieux6781 I feel I should add some extra information, the Nazi party was established in 1920. Wagner died in the late 1880s. Edit: Although, he supported antisemitism, and was Hitler's favorite composer (According to Google)
