Jonas Kaufmann performs Siegmund in concert from Wagner's "Die Walküre" at the Bayerische Staastoper. This performance, of Act 1 of Wagner's opera, marked the reopening of the Bayerische Staatsoper after being closed for many months due to Covid-19. Lise Davidsen performs Sieglinde, and Georg Zeppenfeld performs Hunding, while Asher Fisch conducts the Bayerisches Staatsorchester. A video broadcast of the performance is available for a limited time after the performance.

Fantastic. I watched the entire stream. I attended Jonas’s Siegmund debut at the Met, with Eva Maria Westbroek, and all of his rare New York performances. Update: I saw Jonas again as Siegmund, April 2023, in Naples. A little more careful these days, but still thrilling.

Actually, his vibrato is slower and less reliable than it was some years ago. Age is catching up with him. And Lise Davidsen can't compare with the great Wagnerian sopranos - there's a lack of solidity in her lower register, which is rather worrying.

@@amydrill7129 The notes are Wagner’s and they are the same. The only difference is the conductor’s pacing, detailing, etc. This is why rehearsals happen. By the time of the performance, everything should be understood by all, more or less. During the performance it is up to the singers to follow the conductor as much as it is up to the conductor to be with his or her singers. But generally speaking, the conductor’s ideas and instructions are explained during rehearsals. Singers fixed to a score can never deliver anything close to spontaneous.
