And what that lady wants is elegance, style, and power. And good brakes. She’s not throwing it into corners. She’s probably not even driving perceptibly different than if she’s driving a Corolla. But she’s driving one that costs as much as 20 Corollas in 2008, and that’s enough for her to feel special. And him. Cars like that are all for show anyway.

I don't know why you have to feel bad for Skyler. She "thinks" she's doing something nice, but what she is actually doing is something SHE wants, for someone else. Skyler seldom takes other people's wishes or desires into consideration. In the case of the car, yes, Walter Jr is a snotty, entitled & self-centered little shit who should be grateful that his parents gave him ANY car, but she & Walt raised him, so that's on them. There are two factors at play with his disappointment, either of which could have been mitigated by Skyler's minimal effort to find out what Walt Jr wants. It is not at all difficult to figure out what kind of car would make a teenage boy happy. Most of them will tell you at the slightest pretext. If she wanted a pleased reaction from him, and his dream car was well outside of her comfort zone, she could sit him down for a frank discussion of pros and cons, and what is a deal-breaker for her, his MOTHER, in whose house he lives, and who provides absolutely everything he has, and try to find some middle ground that will please him in a way she can live with. The other factor in Jr's disappointment is the absence of his father, not just at the car presentation, but in their home and daily life. And that's on Skyler. He's good enough to take his dirty money, but not to live in their home? Jr knows the money is coming from Walt's gambling, for which SHE kicked him out of the house. Because that's the lie his mother told him. If she doesn't want him to be so attached to a criminal, she should TELL him, to prevent things like his undermining her complaint to the police, or getting a ride to Walt's place and trying to stay with him. In both cases, you can't expect the kid you have been allowing to make up his own name, and indulging him in that regard, to comply with your wishes over his own, when you have been sending the message that his wishes matter more. You can't give him carte blanch to denounce his father's choices at an intervention, telling him that his opinion has weight against an adult, and then think he will meekly accept your definition of a fun car or a good father. But that is an ongoing thing with Skyler. She tends to assume that her assessment of what is best for another person is what they can and should accept. We see that with the birthday handjob & surprise party, with her accosting and threatening a strange drug dealer on his own property, with the veggie bacon and the frozen yogurt and her offer for the car wash. She can't imagine that Bogdan or Jesse would say no to her. She can't imagine that the nebulous health benefits matter more to her son or brother-in-law than the taste of their favorite foods. She KNOWS this stuff is for the best, or is very desirable and OF COURSE everyone will do what she wants. It's all of a piece with her colossal blunder in having Saul give Ted a small fortune, in the expectation that Ted will act in the way that Skyler wishes, that most benefits her, instead of in pursuit of his own agenda and desires.
