Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

We fished the Bay this past Sat, June 10, and the pickings were slim. 6 rods and we only caught two halibut and two striped bass as keepers. One leopard shark and two rays. Those went back in the Bay. Hopefully we have better luck next time.

I agree on using the heat shrink with the seal compound inside. Also, your Expando jacket material is "wicking" the water right into the butt splice. Do add come sealant to that upper side as well. Stay safe!

Great videos. Next time you have an issue with the power cables, use individual black heat shrink over the heat shrink connectors. Then use the large diameter to heat shrink them together. Just need to feed them down the wires first, once the connectors are shrunk, slide the individual ones, shrink and then the big one to tie it together. 😊

Love your content. Appeared to be very bumpy out there on the waters. I wonder how long this SFO halibut fishery can be sustained with this much pressure. Charter boats posting limits every day. I know of one commercial fisherman, rod/reel, that catches on average 15-20+ halibut every day fishing out of Oyster Point Marina. Having been around too long I guess, watched several fisheries go by the wayside over the years; WA salmon, particularly Elliot Bay fishing boat house culture, Puget Sound rockfish, tru cod populations, comm'l net draggers virtually eliminated the black rockies & boccacio in central Puget Sound, AK Kenai salmon fishery, BC steelhead and many WA steelhead native runs endangered (Nisqually river all but gone). Fish stocks can only take so much. Fish just don't grow to harvestable size in a year or two.

I’ve been saying the same thing. No wonder why they lowered the limit to 2 halibut. Same can be said for the massive hauls of Stripers as well on those Charter Boats. I do understand they gotta make a living with Salmon season being closed. Its tough

I prefer to use silicone insulated stranded wire.(It is much more flexible and forgiving when repeatedly manipulating that power cable.) It's a lot less prone to have those kind of failures than pvc. It is also a much better practice to solder them, coat in silicone insulating grease and heatshrink, rather than using a butt splice like that. Those are more appropriate for solid wire. I am sure that happened when it was kinked inadvertently close to that stiffer section, which probably partially unseated the wiring and broke the seal. Good thing that was caught quickly. It could have easily given a nasty jolt.

I think I know what happened to the cables which ran straight to your cicuit breaker then to the battery connection terminals. I've had this happen to me when I went to Half Moon Bay just cruisin around the Marina with my ROBOYAK/eKayak I design and built. I soldered my wires connections from the motor to the battery but unfortunately the wires I used that I purchased from Amazon were not 100 percent copper wires, therefore, it was not able to withstand the 40/60 amp power running through the wires and it melted the wires insulation and caused the wires to short out and eventually melted just like what happened to yours. That was part of my test run on my cabling system while running my motor at full throttle which produced a lot of heat which caused a short circuit. Lessons learned and I resoldered the wires, with a stronger copper heavier gage, separated the negative and positive wires, applied heat shrink tubbing on each wire then shrink tube both and wrapped the wires with electrical tape. So, far, so good. I took it to Santa Cruz for another test ride and all is well. I watched some of your recent videos and they’re very entertaining. I’m not a fisherman but I grew up eating fish when my Dad had a buy and sell fish for profit, business. I tried fishing in Santa Cruz but didn’t catch one. I had some bites but my main goal was to test my eKayak for performance and stability. By the way, I’m a subscriber to your channel. God bless.

Just got the new Fish & Wildlife email and the limit has been reduced to 2 fish in the areas near and north of SF Bay. Too bad, but as much as people get twisted about these changes, the fishery needs protection. Everytime I see someone taking over limit or undersized I feel like they are stealing from all the other sport fishermen in the state. Arrogant and irresponsible. Really like how Die Hard always emphasizes complying with the game laws.

You can use those crimps but it isnt the correct tool with the heat shrimk butt splice connectors. when you use those, chances are you broke the insulation of the butt slice on both and water being a conductor, they were shorting out to each other.. water or salt water wont make it smoke like that, it smokes when they shorting out to each other. I would butt splice both and individually heat shrink both leads then you can put another heat shrink over both... just figured I could drop advice to anyone reading
