Industrial diesel engines of this type are usually rated at 3000 or 3600 rpm. They don't go above that. So if you are not modifying your BMW box or final drive ratios, just check your road speed at those revs.

I don't think so, that's probably a 16hp @1500rpm tractor engine, they only go up to 2000rpm.

I aimed to build a similar bike like this. I love Yamaha xs750 triples. I want re place an 3zyl. Diesel in an XS frame with Dnepr/Ural gearbox. The problem is the max speed: The Dnepr gearbox is adjusted for 5500 rpm to 120 km/h. This gearbox driven with an Diesel engine and max. 3500 rpm is just a fast tractor. So I gave up. Sad.

I am amazed that diesel bikes are not more common, and neither am I persuaded by the arguments against them. Bikes are generally expensive, and the manufacturers are always pushing the latest engine update,.or frame update, or gadget. But what about those who just want a cheap, a dirt cheap to run no frills bike to even do a daily 20 mile commute, where the only requirement is it is safe, and flows fine with the traffic. This seems to do the trick.

+Kohala Iron Works (Chief) Most custom bikes run a belt driven gear box. Google search motorcycle drivetrain or transmission. Lots of options around the $1k mark
