The EPA not only removes the blends from fuel/diesel but they also regulate the engine oils too. The lubricity in motor oils has been leaned just the same which also increase engine parts wear.

That's interesting about the fuel lines being single-use. Same thing on gas DFI engines. Have to toss the lines when you open the system since they deform to make the seal. On my GM they really have you crank the fittings down pretty good. Something like 25 ft-lbs.

I almost threw up when I dumped 3 gallons into my fuel tank two weeks ago. I had to start it for just about 5 seconds so I could put it in neutral and start it down hill to roll in front of my work shop. Well I dropped the full tank of fuel ( ouch $120 worth) and drained it. Washed it out with garden hose real good. The pickup pump and lines and fuel filter on the tank. Installed it and added 3 gal of power service and a gallon of Power service 911. Mixed with 5 gal of fresh fuel. Drove it for a while then added 5 more gallons. Drove it 230 miles then added a full tank. Kept adding Power Service 1 gal per full fuel tank. Drove it another 300 miles then changed both fuel filters. Cut them open and let them dry for a few days. Not one spec of crystal any where on any of either filter. I guess I lucked out. On a side note I did it twice before on my 2011 6.7. That was at 45k miles..Only a qt or so. Just drained the first filter every few miles then changed the filters out while adding lot's of power service for a while. Traded it in at 165k and still running smooth. No issues there. On a side note. Why didn't I just call Ford to come and tow it while it was just in the tank and I hadn't started it at all? Had too many important things to be done the next day and 1 week after and another 1 week after and another 1 week after. I went for it. At that point I didn't care what happed to the truck. Either it was going to run and do that all or frig it. I now have a locking gas cap that should help.

Man alive all this just because the genius Ford engineers put the DEF fill right next to the fuel fill. This is just another reason why the new 7.3 Godzilla gasser is going to be so successful. That motor will do everything diesels were doing not too long ago…but without the HUGE upfront costs + the outrageous maintenance and repair bills. It's a shame that the EPA has killed the simplicity of diesels.

I did this once at 40,000 miles on my Ram. Long story short I’d put about 3/4 to 1 gallon in the diesel tank. The truck was at idle when I did it and it immediately started to run rough and died. At the time having it towed wasn’t an option and I had a load to deliver. I shook the truck to help get the def off the bottom of the tank and got the truck started again. It ran a little rough when I first took off but then it cleared up and I drove the dog out of it. I had to stop now and then to drain the water separators but that was it. The diesel tank was full when this happened, after running that tank out I changed the fuel filters and never had a problem. 300,000 miles now and she still runs strong. I wouldn’t recommend anyone do what I did because it can blow the injector tips off, guess I got lucky! Lol

I usually just pump the fuel out with an electric pump, change fuel filters, and fill it up with a bunch of diesel.... if they hadn't ran it. I have had pretty good luck without having to remove and clean the tank. And its like 5 grand in just PARTS for that fuel system/pump replacement package. Great video though! I will tell my customers not to turn that key on! I always learn something from Bill.

I've got one thats even more expensive and way more scary. There has been several biz jets that people have added DEF fluid into the jets fuel system instead of a product called prist. Prist is used in jets to prevent the jet fuel from jelling when it gets cold. When they added DEF into the jets fuel it did the same thing to the jet engines. The def turned to crystals in the fuel system and shut down the engines. Yes, the planes were in the air but by luck were able to land on a runway without further damage. The engines were ruined and required a complete rebuild which is in the millions. The jets were old enough that the expense was so excessive that the jets were totaled. Millions of dollars of damage. Two of the jets that I remember were for air ambulance service so they had some pretty extensive airframe modifications for that mission, which the insurance company didn't want to cover. Last I heard there was a lawsuit ongoing. 5k for a truck repair is nickel-dime compared to that.

I'd imagine getting DEF at the pump makes this more likely. I get it in the big 2.5g jugs with the bendy straw funnel. Also makes it obvious to me why not all DEF tanks fill from the fuel filler area. Seems nice to have them in the same area for convenience, but unless you're just the type to always pay attention, it can be deadly...

The basic engine is not bad but the CP4.2 fuel pump is reason alone to run from this truck.

Yeah I’m watching this $10k later ! Dodge doesn’t have a gas cap only a flapper why the hell don’t they make the nozzles in a way that they won’t fit into the wrong tank 🙄 but then the def is bull 💩 in the first place !

Diesel is becoming Dodo. Just have to question. Worth it in general? Nope. Too much rubbish to stay diesel loyal. Nah, Get a gas, wear it out and replace it for 1/5 cost. Diesel is a dumb investment. Negative payback in all situations. Very serious impressive design but very serious economical design flaws. However, the diesel will always have a testosterone following. The economy disappeared when regen came about. IMO, dump the diesel. Sorry fellas, I was a fan of them but lost my moxa for the thing.

I dove diesel cars from 1977 to 2018. I have been offered to buy a very good shape low mileage VW Jetta Diesel, it's a standard and it has this DEF thing, I passed I drove Jettas for decades- I just will not deal with the DEF and the fact that Diesel VW's are no longer being brought in to the country and well parts will be an issue. As much as I liked diesel, unless you have some specific needs ie towing and a lot of driving they are just not worth the trouble and expense these days. Diesel Fuel is crap these days thanks to the EPA nonsense. It's being regulated off the road, at least in personal transport applications.

I miss my 7.3 trucks.. but NEVER will I own one of these PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE trucks. For now, my trouble free 13 year old 5.7 Tundra will do.

7.3’s and 12v’s are over rated and over priced. I’d rather deal with one of these trucks than one of those old, leaky, and powerless dinosaurs.

24 valves are pretty good but 12 valves especially non intercooled are powerless. The main idea during those years was diesel was for efficiency as trucks would get 12mpg or less especially those Ford 460 or GM 454.
