Good explanation here Rich. Now you'll get all the guys that have their solenoid working but their glow plug relay failed and the cold-blooded thing won't start, so they are going to comment and say just cranks and makes white smoke. So next you're gonna have to make a how to jump your glow plugs right to the battery count to 10 and then start your mower video. Haha

That fuel solenoid is case grounded and has a pull and a hold circuit! That means it takes a two powers to get the solenoid to come on One is momentary just when cranking

@@madcat4563 its a reference to the style of cooking shows Martha Stewart did (still does?) Where she preps the food to be cooked, and when it's finally ready to go in the oven, they immediately bring out an identical meal that was already fully cooked, for the sake of air time. It was a joke about already having the new part he needed on hand. On the topic - I get why they'd do it, (esp if it's live), but it just seemed weird and bogus to do a switcheroo at the end. I remember my mom used to watch some '15 min meals' show, and she would always point out that all the ingredients were already cleaned/cut/measured/layed out ahead of time. It's bs, that's half the job they just skipped. W/e lol.

On a kubota, the shut off solenoid get's it's ground through the engine block - The two wires going to it is a positive pull function and the other is a positive holding function! Common mistake if you don't work with kubota engines!

It would be awesome if you guys could do an OM606 swap sometimes in the future. Would love to see how you would it, but ofc for the main channel. It is sad that it is so expensive dough. Would not need massive hp gains, maybe see what can be achieved on a rather small budget and put in an US produced car, like an s10 or Buick of some sorts(the same body style as what the GNX has). Thanks for the video and God bless from Norway.

Sorry rich. Most Kubota shut off solenoids arent ground and power. One of the wires is ignition power, the other is "pull in", aka current only when the starter is cranking. I do tech support for Kubota engines, and this is the most common misconception with these engines. Every one thinks these two wires are power and ground because they have two wires, but thats not usually correct

Love the super simple explanations. This would have been super helpful to see a few years ago when I was just getting my career started and didn't have a bunch of knowledge 😂. I feel like most videos about diesel engines and equipment just kind of dive right in because you're already supposed to at least have good knowledge of these systems beforehand, and can be tough to follow if you're not solid with your basics yet.
@ctdieselnut
@ctdieselnut Жыл бұрын
I think this vid in particular is for anyone with a small mechanical diesel that can use a quick fix, which is totally fine. But, there's so many great vids on the basics already. If you want to learn about this stuff from scratch, thats on you to do first. I bet the majority of people that watch this channel already know the basics. I want the lesser known, but still relevant, technical details/techniques. Call me a nerd, but that's how i continue learning. Particularly new systems, or diagnostics, which kind of make or break you as a mechanic.
@ctdieselnut

Sometimes half the battle is just knowing the correct terminology to use while searching for answers online. (Im not a pro mechanic, but work on a ton of vehicles/equipment.) Huge difference between 'why wont my tractor start' and 'how to disable a fuel shutoff solenoid'. For example, im not sure that's exactly what its called. But itll at least get you in the right direction faster.

@jbthestoner5504 Жыл бұрын
@@ctdieselnut for me specifically, these basic explanations help a lot when it comes to engines. As a mechanic, so far I've only worked on fleets of trucks, therefore I have very little experiences with engine performance, yet I have advanced knowledge about hydraulics, electrical, driveline, steering/suspension, and general heavy equipment stuff, since we generally outsource engine work and only worry about the rest of the truck.

Yanmar is similar except 3 wires to the solenoid and no mechanical shutoff that I’ve found. I’ve learned the third wire is hot with the key in the start position, and seems to “pull in” the plunger, and then the hot with key on only generates enough magnetism to hold the plunger/armature, but not pull it in.

We have a ventrac 4500 at work that won’t shut off. The solenoid works when we bench test it, but it’s not getting power in the machine. Tried swapping the TCU computer but still doesn’t work. So I had to run a pull cord to shut it off. I have continuity through the wire from the connector to the computer and no continuity from ground to the wire. So it must be somewhere before the computer. Not looking forward to diagnosing it, I’m not a fan of electrical harness troubleshooting.

The super funny thing about my kubota g1800 riding mower, she has to juice the solenoid to shut off. this is accomplished by a $400 computer. Why, oh why, kubota, did you not just make it juice to run instead of juice to kill? I took an old choke cable and mounted it in the dash, now i have manual shut off lmao. Also, the deck design on this thing is RIDICULOUS. There's no lateral support, only two arms from the front, so nothing to keep the deck torking side to side. Wears out all the linkages and with kubota, every "thing" is at least 100. $300 if there's a weld...
